Announcing: The Stripes & Sequins Shop on Birchbox

We’re thrilled to announce that we’ve partnered with the very lovely Grace Atwood of Stripes & Sequins on an exclusive curated shop! The sparkle-obsessed DIY jewelry queen, whose accessible-and-fun personal style we can’t get enough of, has chosen 24 of her favorite products from the Birchbox universe. Check out all her picks here and read what she has to say about some of her selections below!

I always like to brag to people that I was one of Birchbox’s first beta members. Among the first twenty! Three years later, Birchbox impresses me every day with their innovation and product offering. As a true beauty junkie who has tried nearly everything under the sun, I still manage to get introduced to incredible new products (the Suki scrub, for example) through the service and editorial. So I’m really honored to be featured on Birchbox right now with my own curated Shop showing off my all-time favorites.

Most of the products speak for themselves, but there were a few I thought I’d call out because of their superhero powers:

1) I am positively in love with this face scrub. It’s all natural, smells amazing, and has become a treat I look forward to every other morning. It cleanses and exfoliates without irritating my skin, which is huge because my skin is actually very sensitive.

2) This nail polish remover is the best I’ve ever used. It cuts through the toughest (read: glitter) nail polishes without drying out nails. The best part? It doesn’t smell bad!

3) I’ve been using Benefit Hoola for nearly ten years now, since it first came out.  Despite its muddy coloring, it gives the perfect healthy glow. It lasts forever, too. I wear it every single day and only go through one container of it every year and a half or so.

4) MAKE cosmetics has become a new favorite of mine, and I really love this lipstick. It’s really creamy and hydrating, and the color isn’t quite as bold as it looks in the tube. All of the shades are beautiful, but Flamingo is my favorite.

Hello, spring! The mood-lifting effects of longer days and warmer weather have put a bounce in everyone’s step here at Birchbox HQ. The skirts are flowing, the shoulders are bare, and the polishes are vibrant—which of course means that our Operations Team (@BirchboxOps), a.k.a. Special Ops, has started rocking the bright mani trend. Here are a few of the springtime lacquer looks that have made a star appearance in the office:

Sparkly Matte Nails at Timo Weiland: Guest Blogger

image

For this week’s fashion week, we couldn’t have landed a better nail correspondent (put that title on a business card!). Taryn Multack, the genius behind Miss Ladyfinger, initially started her blog as a way to translate fashion trends to manicures. Since those early days, she’s partnered with top designers and brands. She’ll be reporting all next season’s must-try hues and designs.

It’s only the first day of NYFW, but there is already a clear nail trend for Fall ’13: matte polish. Now, matte can be tricky because it can make us look washed out or sometimes even looks unfinished. But this was definitely not the case backstage at Timo Weiland.

Zoya lead manicurist, Sunshine Outing, created a sparkly layered look using the Zoya Pixie Dust formulas (stunning sparkly polishes in subdued colors that create a matte effect). “Timo wanted a navy nail, so rather than blending it, we layered it,” she says. “To get the nail, paint one layer of Godiva, followed by a layer of Dahlia, and topped it off with Nyx. Keep in mind, the Pixie Dust line doesn’t play well with other polishes.”

The effect is a sparkly matte navy Ladyfinger that twinkles. The best part? All three polishes are currently available in store. Go get ‘em, ladies.

3 New Year’s Resolutions for My Nails: Mani Monday

As much as we love nail art, we’re better at admiring designs than coming up with them ourselves. That’s why we’ve enlisted Anna Norman, the smarty pants behind Glitter, She Wrote, to be a regular contributor. Every Monday, she’ll be sharing her latest lacquer inspiration—you won’t be satisfied with plain ol’ polish again.

I’m all about New Year’s Resolutions this year. In addition to the rest of my list (eat more greens, run a half marathon, tidy up my apartment each night), I’m adding a few beauty-related goals for 2013. I put my nails through a lot during the year, so it’s time to give them a little TLC. Here are three things I’m doing this year to make it up to my fingers:

Is 5-Free the New Standard For Nail Polish?

What’s missing in the latest nail polish formulas? Nothing that you’re going to miss. (Photo: about.com)

When nail polish was first created in France in the 1920’s, the formula was an adapted version of the glossy enamel used on cars. Eep! Thankfully, the formulas have come a long way since then. Over the past few years, we’ve seen many “3-free” formulas that omit harmful dibutyl phthalate (DBP), toluene, and formaldehyde. The next step: 5-free polishes, which are made without formaldehyde resin and camphor. Click through for more on these two toxic ingredients and for a list of our favorite 5-free brands!

Easy Nail Art for Chipped Tips: Mani Monday

As much as we love nail art, we’re better at admiring designs than coming up with them ourselves. Every Monday, she’ll be sharing her latest lacquer inspiration—you won’t be satisfied with plain ol’ polish again.

Chips happen. Even if you use top-of-the-line polish and take the utmost care with your nails, the final day of a manicure isn’t always pretty. But just because you have a chip or two doesn’t mean you need to start from scratch.

On days when I’m running out of the house or don’t feel like taking off all of my polish (especially dark polish or glitter, which can be labor-intensive), I turn to nail art for a quick cure. Today I brought life back to my chipped nails with a simple technique—reinforcement sticker half moons. Here’s how to get the look:

5 Nail Colors You Need This Fall: Mani Monday

As much as we love nail art, we’re better at admiring designs than coming up with them ourselves. As the seasons change and you begin reaching for sweaters and boots instead of sundresses and flip flops, it’s prime time to revamp your nail polish wardrobe, too. I’ve loved the brights and neons from the summer, but I’m so ready for fall. Here are my five color picks to keep your nails in top form this autumn:

Holographic: I’m crazy about the subtle holographic polishes popping up in fall collections this year. Holos are more subdued than big, chunky glitters, but still pack an eye-catching, sparkly punch. I’m wearing Butter London Dodgy Barnett, a pale grey with a barely-there holographic sheen.

How to Create “Jelly Sandwich” Nails: Mani Monday

As much as we love nail art, we’re better at admiring designs than coming up with them ourselves. That’s why we’ve enlisted Anna Norman, the smarty pants behind Glitter, She Wrote, to be a regular contributor. Every Monday, she’ll be sharing her latest lacquer inspiration—you won’t be satisfied with plain ol’ polish again.

If you’re looking for a fun new way to wear glitter, look no further than the “jelly sandwich” manicure. This nail technique has swept the blogosphere, and for good reason! It’s quick, foolproof for even the shakiest hands, and the color combinations are endless.

You’ll need two polishes to get the look. A jelly polish will serve as the sandwich’s bread, with a layer of glitter polish in between. What’s jelly polish, you might ask? These lacquers are somewhat translucent, even after a few coats, and provide sheer, glossy color. I’m using Essie True Love today, along with four different glitters to show you a variety of looks.
