Get Compliments on Your Beauty—Not Your Makeup: Guest Blogger

Whether you’re looking for celebrity gossip, the best product for frizzy hair, or advice on what to wear to your cousin’s wedding, the gals at Lovelyish have got you covered. This week, a handful of the site’s staffers—Katie Kubiak, Annie Strole, and Allison Wheeler—are bringing their expertise to our blog in a series of five beauty and style how-tos.

Well-done makeup is always nice, but would you rather get compliments on your makeup or on your beauty? Personally, I’m not the kind of gal that can leave the house bare-faced, but it always feels good when someone asks if I’m not wearing makeup when I really am.

To pull off the no-makeup makeup look takes a bit of know-how and all the right formulas.

Chatting With Nasty Gal’s Beauty Guru And Stylist

We fell hard for Natalie Alcala last fall, when the LA-based writer and blogger spent a week guest blogging for us. In fact, we loved her posts so much that we asked her to be a contributing editor. In addition to blogging for us once a week, she’ll also be writing for the Birchbox Magazine and keeping us up to speed on all things fashion, beauty, and fun.

Stacey Nishimoto is one of L.A.’s most treasured trendsetters. In addition to reviving the backcoming hair trend, she also does a killer cat-eye and isn’t afraid to rock a bold lip. As a stylist and makeup artist for Nasty Gal, Nishimoto is responsible for glamming gorgeous gals for the cool-kid e-tailer’s lookbooks and online shop. Did I mention that she’s also a new mom?

I sat down with Nishimoto to hear more about her makeup memories, go-to products, and the one celeb she’d love to make over.

A 330-Pound Lipstick Sculpture Now on View in Paris

Artist Fabrice Hyber’s sculpture made entirely from lipstick. (Photo: WWD)

There’s lipstick in a tube, and then there’s lipstick in the form of a 330-pound cubical sculpture on view at the Palais de Tokyo museum in Paris. Entitled “1M3 de beauté,” which means “one cubic meter of beauty,” it’s the work of French artist Fabrice Hyber and part of his show Matières Premières (a.k.a. Raw Materials), which runs through January 7th. The shade on view is none other than Yves Saint Laurent’s Rouge Pur Couture number one. “It needed to be a red that is very vivid, very present,” Hyber told WWD

Our math skills are a bit rusty, but we’re wondering: how many individual tubes of lipstick would equal the weight of this mammoth cube? And perhaps more importantly, if he bought all those lipsticks, how much did that cost?

5 Helpful Makeup Tricks for Anyone Who Wears Glasses

Based in Washington D.C., Ayren Jackson-Cannady is so savvy that we wished she lived closer to NYC so that we could swap products with her. This beauty writer knows what’s up (she’s written for Fitness, Glamour, and Gloss Daily) and we’re excited to have her sharing her know-how and multi-culti beauty expertise as a contributing editor.

Whenever I see a woman with cool glasses (wayfarers are my favorite!) and standout makeup, I get seriously jealous. I look more four-eyes than fabulous when I try to recreate the makeup and eyeglasses look. I wanted to find out what I was doing wrong, so I appealed to a couple of makeup artists for some answers.

Curl Those Lashes
Your top eyelashes should be curled, says Carl Ray, a makeup artist in Washington, D.C. “Curling will prevent them from touching the lenses of your glasses.”
