Beat Winter Skin Organically: Guest Blogger

In the fashion world, there’s outfit envy. In the beauty world, there’s makeup envy — and we are seriously envious when it comes to Annamarie Tendler. A genius makeup artist, Tendler covers a wide range of topics on her am. blog, but her The Daily Face posts, which chronicle her day-to-day makeup looks, are our favorite. (FYI: She did an amazing series in October called The Spooky Scary Daily Face, which was epic.) Each day she inspires with a gorgeous new look, and for one whole week, she’s sharing her makeup expertise with lucky, lucky us.

My skin gets really dry and itchy in the winter, but I’m not a fan of conventional moisturizers. For the most part, I think they’re filled with unhealthy ingredients, a lot of which end up drying out the skin more. Furthermore, no matter how many moisturizers claim not to leave a greasy residue, let’s be serious, so many of them do.

Let It Snow: Mood Board

Our creative team is pretty, well, creative and they come across beautiful imagery all the time. Why not share the inspiration? Keep an eye out each Friday for their Mood Board, a collection of images they’re loving.

Here in New York, we had a very unusual fall (for example, it snowed back in October). So we decided to tribute today’s post to the bittersweet cold winter days that are just ahead of us. We love watching snow fall, but we could do without the bone-chilling temperatures that comes along with it. Here’s to living in a four season state and drinking plenty of hot cocoa to stay warm!

Brr! Cold Weather Skincare Tips

It is positively freezing frigid in New York right now, and we can’t seem to put on enough layers. The same goes for our skin — when it comes to extreme cold and wind, you can’t just get away with the same old moisturizer. First things first, you have to exfoliate away the dead skin. Next, think layers: start with a face oil or hyaluronic acid, then add your best moisturizer, and finish with SPF. At night, apply a rich face oil or night cream so that your skin can heal while you sleep. And don’t forget your extremities - your lips need a thick layer of protection too. Look for a rich balm with shea butter, cocoa butter or other naturally healing ingredients. Apply it under your lipgloss or lipcolor to keep any flakes at bay. If all else fails, you can always do what I do: wrap your warmest scarf around your mouth and nose so that only your eyes peek out. Brr!

Pick up a rich cream or exfoliator in the Birchbox Shop.

Snowed In? Why not…

Make a DIY scrub. This month’s Beauty in Action, Daphne Oz (stay tuned for her Q&A) loves salt and olive oil for rough legs, elbows, and feet. Play around with the proportions but she uses roughly a cup of olive oil to a half cup of salt (or sugar for sensitive skin).

Play with makeup. Mess around with your most outrageous eyeshadow colors, master that winged liner once and for all, or break out that teasing brush. You’re not leaving the house so who cares if you mess up?

Give yourself a mani. And take your time. Use Deborah Lippmann’s thorough step-by-step guide.

Whip up some hot chocolate, finish off that leftover gingerbread, and stay cozy!
