Kara Manos of Politics of Pretty has been obsessed with everything beauty since she was a girl—which has made her an epic resource as a grownup. We love Kara’s savvy coverage of beauty trends and news, which is why we had to find out her best tips for an everyday routine: shaving.
Just because cooler temperatures are right around the corner doesn’t mean it’s time to start avoiding a date with your razor! Here are seven top-notch tips and tricks when it comes to achieving smooth (not stubbly) skin.
- More blades can cause more pain. A five-blade razor can be precise, but be wary of this option since it can cut hair down to a subdermal layer, and if you have sensitive skin, you’re at greater risk of getting ingrown hairs and razor burn. I’ve always had a solid shave with Bic Soleil Disposables (not to mention it’s a great budget buy!).
Never shave your legs dry. Trust me, I’ve always paid the price for those quick-fixes. Shaving is a natural exfoliator and dry shaving can lead to clogging up the razor with dead skin and puts you at risk for nicks and razor burn. Ouch!
- Opt for sensitive-skin shaving cream formulas. Read the label. If alcohol or fragrance is one of the first three ingredients listed, avoid it. I discovered whish Shave Cream in my Birchbox and it completely changed my shaving routine. My legs can’t live without it!
When the Birchbox Beauty Partnership team isn’t working hard to make sure your boxes are filled with awesome beauty samples, we take some time to blow off steam with a little competitive fun. Recently, we geared up with bandanas and war paint, and ventured out to Central Park for a day on the field.
Following an afternoon of relay races, kickball, and a tie-breaking water balloon fight, our grimy-feeling team members were happy they came prepared with a few necessary clean-up items. Perhaps a little predictably, everyone had hidden a pack of wipes in their bags to de-grime on-the-go. Read on to discover the products they brought along:

I’ve been a huge Halle Berry fan since her scene-stealing turn in 1999’s Bulworth. So when I heard via The National Enquirer (yes, I am proudly subscribe to their emails) that the Oscar-winner recently tied the knot, I immediately launched into amateur sleuth mode. Translation: I trolled celebrity gossip sites for hours.
My digging unearthed some juicy tidbits about the nuptials, but not the one thing I was really looking for: a picture of the radiant bride in her wedding dress. Drats! While I await more details, I opted to try and recreate the leading lady’s signature look for myself.

Like many East Asian women, including my mom, I was born with nearly hairless legs. As a result, shaving has never been my number one priority, and I’ve developed a set of horrific habits over the years. I use and re-use my razor until the blade gets so dull it’s completely useless. I shave my legs with the same regularity that I water my cacti (translation: almost never). And instead of shaving cream, I rely on whatever soap or body wash I have lying around. But since I’ve been wearing lots of shorts and skirts this summer, I recently vowed to shave at least once a week with real shaving cream. Last night, I tried Whish Body’s Shave Crave, and I have to say I was instantly hooked.
