How To: Curl Short Hair

You may know Birchbox staffer Whitney as one of our dedicated discovery specialists, but what you probably don’t know is that she’s also a creative genius at work behind the scenes of our video program. Since she’s a hairstyling wiz to boot, we recently dragged her out from behind the camera to show off her skills with a curling iron on her newly-chopped hair. Watch the video above to learn how to transform a short bob into a curly style, perfect for a Saturday night out or getting prepped for the holiday party season.

Who says girls with long hair get to have all the fun? Let us know in the comments what your favorite short hair styles are—we may just persuade Whitney to make another tutorial!

VIDEO: Getting Easy-Breezy Waves is as Simple as Using This 1 Tool

Lately I’ve been a little obsessed with wavy hair. My hair naturally dries stick straight and has a bad habit of flattening out evenafter I’ve spent hours blow-drying, curling, and hairspraying it. Call it a case of the grass is always greener, but I’m loathe to step out of my apartment without at least a little wave in my strands.

So when Birchbox staffer (and former proprietor of an underground salon in her dorm room) Bridgette offered to show us how to curl hair using Sedu’s genius clipless curling iron, I jumped at the chance to get her on set. Watch the video after the jump to learn her technique for natural-looking, never over-done waves.

30-Second Hair Looks You Have to Try Right Now

Based in Washington D.C., Ayren Jackson-Cannady is so savvy that we wished she lived closer to NYC so that we could swap products with her. This beauty writer knows what’s up (she’s written for Fitness, Glamour, and Gloss Daily) and we’re excited to have her sharing her know-how and multi-culti beauty expertise as a contributing editor.

All I could manage to do over the last couple of days—other than watch the weather channel and nervously eat Goldfish crackers—was pin pretty pictures on Pinterest. I’ve been finding a ton of quicklooks (think things you can do in 30 seconds or less) and I had to share them. Here are three of my favorite ‘dos plus an expert’s tips on getting the looks just right:

The Tousled Bun: For a messy (but chic!) look, Vanessa Fernandez of Butterfly Studio Salon in New York City suggests sticking with your natural texture and adding a texturizing spray (like Davines For Wizards No. 14 Sea Salt Primer) to create separation. “Flip your head upside down; spray, scrunch, and smooth your hair upwards toward the ends, twisting it until it’s in a bun shape and securing with a hair tie,” she says.
