It shouldn’t surprise you to find that all of us at Birchbox are a bit cocktail-obsessed. While the lady eds were chatting up Emma Emerson, co-founder of the cocktail, food, and design website Gastronomista, about rose-colored tipples in honor of Valentine’s Day, the editors at Birchbox Man were plying the very same Ms. Emerson for handcrafted holiday libations. Clearly, great minds think alike—a mere few desks away. Check out our post on non-girly, non-cliché pink cocktails, then scoot over to The Guide for 3 more recipes. Happy drinking!
Flying solo on Valentine’s Day? Check out guest blogger Jessica Dang’s single-girl rituals.
Valentine’s Day is all about love (and chocolate and flowers and overpriced prix fixe dinners). But there’s no rule that says this Hallmark holiday is just for couples. We tapped Jessica Dang, the singleton blogger behind Single Girl Dinner, for her favorite solo pursuits to stave off the Valentine’s Day blues.
1. Give yourself an at-home facial.
Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare’s Alpha Beta Daily Face Peel is a simple, two-step treatment that will give you glowing, dewy skin in five minutes flat. Wipe your face with the pre-soaked pads, pour yourself a glass of wine and wait while the cocktail of glycolic, lactic, malic, and citric acids, healing green tea and chamomile extracts, and antioxidant-rich vitamins does its thing. Win!
Valentine’s Day brings to mind all things sweet and pink—conversation hearts, raspberry cream-filled chocolates, and that ubiquitous cocktail, the Cosmo. Thankfully, pink-hued tipples have improved tremendously since the vodka-cranberry concoction’s 1990s heyday. We’ve tapped Emma Emerson, co-founder of cocktail, food, and design website Gastronomista, for eight recipes guaranteed to make your heart—and tastebuds—go pitter-patter. We’re happy to report that there’s nary a Cosmo or white-chocolate-raspberry martini in sight.
1. Pink Gin
Don’t be fooled by the somewhat girly name: This cocktail originated with the 19th-century British Royal Navy, which prescribed the drink to seamen suffering from seasickness. I happen to think it’s perfect for 21st-century imbibing.
2 oz Plymouth Gin
3 drops Angostura bitters
Coat the inside of a chilled old fashioned glass with a few drops of Angostura bitters, and discard the excess. Add chilled gin and garnish with a lemon rind.
2. Pink Lady
Hollywood bombshell Jayne Mansfield often enjoyed a Pink Lady, which makes it more than good enough for me.
1 1/2 oz Beefeater Gin
1/4 oz Stirrings Blood Orange Bitters
1 egg white
Shake well with cracked ice and strain into a cocktail coupe. Garnish with a Luxardo Maraschino Cherry.
Let’s face it: Even if you have someone special to celebrate Valentine’s Day with, there’s a good chance of disappointment when it comes to presents. Case in point: My ex-boyfriend once gifted me a stock pot. It was well-intended, really—I love to cook and had recently gone on a soupy stint—but it didn’t exactly scream romance.
Sometimes, it’s just better to treat yourself. (That way, it’s easier to feign excitement over those gas-station carnations).
We’ve sold out of our We Heart Collection, a limited edition box filled with beauty keepsakes and customer-approved best sellers. But don’t worry. We’ve singled out a few of our prettiest products, from a gorgeous PAUL & JOE compact to an eight-shade contouring set from beauty veteran Manna Kadar, that make perfect treats to gift yourself.
Go ahead—you deserve it.
As much as we love nail art, we’re better at admiring designs than coming up with them ourselves. That’s why we’ve enlisted Anna Norman, the smarty pants behind Glitter, She Wrote, to be a regular contributor. Every Monday, she’ll be sharing her latest lacquer inspiration—you won’t be satisfied with plain ol’ polish again.
Whether you celebrate or shun Valentine’s Day, you have to admit it’s a great holiday for nail art. No matter how small your lacquer collection may be, you’re bound to have at least one pink or red polish on hand. Here are five fun looks to jazz up your nails for the special day.
Pretty in Polka Dots: Begin by painting your nails with the pink polish of your choice. I’m using Flip Flop Fantasy from China Glaze. Once the polish has dried, use a Q-tip, paperclip, or other pointy tool to create polka dots across the surface of your nail. I used the white dotting pen in the Birchbox + Color Club Nail Art Kit for fool-proof spots. Make sure to let the dots dry completely before adding a top coat so you don’t smear your work!
Subtle Stripes: Start with the pink polish of your choice and wait for it to dry. Next, use a striping tool or a thin paintbrush to apply diagonal lines across the nail. Don’t worry if your lines are a little wiggly—perfection is not vital here. This design is fun and modern, but from far away your nails will simply look solid pink or red (perfect for the office).
Nail Stickers: I love using seasonal nail stickers with iconic shapes and designs for holidays. I’m wearing Valentine’s Nail Wraps from Nail Rock in a too-cute candy hearts design.
Simple Hearts: If you think tiny hearts are too tricky to pull off, think again! After you’ve applied a base color (I chose white for high contrast), apply two small dots of red polish next to each other on your nail. Immediately use a pin or the tip of a pen to pull the wet dots together to a point, forming the bottom of the heart. It’s as simple as that!
Foil Flakes: I’m crazy about Ciaté’s ColorFoil kit that I tried out last week. For an edgy Valentine’s look, I applied pieces of the metallic pink foil on top of a shiny black lacquer. If you can’t get your hands on the kit, pick up some foil flakes in the nail polish section of your drugstore or beauty supply store. You can also play around with chunky pink or red glitter on top of black polish for a vampy V-Day look.
What will you be wearing on your nails for Valentine’s Day?
