10 Spring Trends You Need to Try

image

We’re three days into spring, and it still feels pretty chilly outside. Not that we’re lobbying for tank top season just yet, but it’d be nice to toss off these scarves soon. Our friends at Food 52 just twisted the knife a little bit harder with their list of 10 Recipes to Welcome Spring—hello rosy rhubarb curd shortbread, decadent morel crostini, and sunny radish couscous.

Since Birchbox HQ has plenty of beauty products but nary a garden plot, we’ve put together our own list of 10 beauty trends to welcome (or shall we say hasten) spring’s arrival.

3 Spring Trends and Fragrances to Add to Your Wardrobe (Now!)

image

We approach scents much like we do our wardrobe: mixing, matching, and rotating fragrances throughout the season. Is it any wonder that our favorite fashion looks tend to influence both our outfits and our spritzes? While reporting at the Fall/Winter 2013 shows, we spotted three trends that we can’t wait to add to our closets. And since we’re never ones to selectively shop, here are the fragrances that will be joining our fragrance wardrobe.

The Beauty Trend With No End in Sight

Sayonara, sparkles! Birchbox staffer Deepica, scores an even, totally velvety complexion courtesy of Jouer’s MMT in Hazel. She looks runway-worthy, no? And Deepica isn’t the only one digging a shine-free visage. The matte makeup movement was originally spotted on the fall runways but shows no signs of abating.

Back in the day (circa 2002), we used a combination of primer, foundation, setting powder, and blotting papers to keep any hint of dewiness at bay. All those products also conspired to give our skin an unflatteringly flat look. Happily we’ve come a long way since then and so have our products.

We’re smitten with Jouer’s lightweight Matte Moisture Tint, which creates multidimensional finish while also hydrating thirsty complexions. (Spoiler alert: some of our subscribers will get to sample MMT this month!) Never powdery, it provides more coverage than its luminizing counterpart and stays fresh all day long. It also has SPF 15 to keep skin protected.

But we haven’t given up our Luminizing Moisture Tint altogether. We still turn to the LMT when we want to up the radiance. We don’t see anything wrong with having two valentines.

How To: Get the New Matte Finish

It’s easy to write off matte skin once the colder months start to fade away. But at the Spring/Summer 2013 runway shows, makeup artists revealed a fresh-looking, updated version of matte: velvety, shine-free complexions that were perfectly paired with airy warm weather attire. To pull off this trendy look without relying too heavily on setting powder, we asked celebrity makeup artist Dora Salgado for her top tips.

Here’s everything you need to know about getting the new matte finish.

One of the easiest ways to achieve this coveted matte finish? A mattifying tinted moisturizer like Jouer’s Matte Moisture Tint.

Trend Alert: Ladies in their 40s, 50s and 60s Now Have the Boldest Hair

We’ve covered a number of crazy hairstyles on this blog, from Miley Cyrus’ asymmetrical platinum cut to Katy Perry’s orange locks on the cover of L’Officiel. But we definitely didn’t anticipate this new trend that’s hitting hair salons across the country. The New York Times is reporting that the bravest, edgiest hairstyles aren’t on the heads of teenagers and 20-somethings anymore—but women in their 40s, 50s, and 60s.

Tweens asking “Am I Ugly?” on YouTube: The New Social Media Trend

Photo: Huffingtonpost.com

There’s a new disturbing trend that’s popped up on YouTube, and I can’t stop thinking about it. News outlets like The Daily Mail and The Huffington Post are reporting that a growing number of adolescents (between the ages of 11 to 14) are posting videos asking, “am I ugly?” and urging commenters to leave thoughts about their looks.

Our Favorite Hair Accessory: Twistbands!

When it comes to trends, we usually keep our eyes on the runways and our favorite style icons (you know: Alexa Chung, the Olsens, and anyone featured regularly on The Sartorialist) for inspiration. But sometimes it pays to keep an eye on real life cool girls. Case in point: a few months ago, we noticed all the P.Y.T.s in our office rocking a certain accessory in their hair and on their wrists. Turns out it was the twistband, a new kind of hair tie that’s so soft it won’t damage hair, wide enough that it won’t crease, and comes in a rainbow of colors and patterns that match (or playfully mismatch) any outfit.

A little digging revealed that these cute little bands have been featured everywhere from The Today Show to Lucky (they’re June Travel Must-Haves) — plus they’re flying off the shelves at Anthroplogie. It’s safe to say that we’re complete converts. We’re using them to keep our hair out of the way during workouts and at the office, and wearing them as makeshift bracelets. There’s not a creased hair in sight! Let us know in the comments, are you a fan? If not, what’s your hair band of choice?

-Lorelei

Twistbands are available now in the Birchbox Shop. Stock up in advance of hair emergencies!
