Customer Love Notes: A Devilishly Cool Polish Collection

Nerd alert: one of our favorite things to do is read the customer reviews in the Birchbox Shop. You all are an opinionated bunch—and we like it! We especially love the love letters you write to your favorite products. (Though we’re still waiting on the haikus and iambic pentameter.) From time to time, we’ll be highlighting extrasweet customer serenades. Next up: a crowd-sourced collection of fashion forward nail colors

Last September, we teamed up with fashion design duo Ruffian on their very first nail lacquer collection. Ever since, Ruffian’s on-trend Crowdsourced Collection has been winning over legions of fans. Here’s what a few Birchboxers had to say:

"Ruffian? More like smoothian. How was I blissfully unaware about to one of the glossiest, shimmeriest nail polishes ever!? I have the color "Hedgefund," a modest green color—I’d call it a feminine forest green. Love it. Plus, unlike most nail polishes, the wear and tear is at a minimum."—hilarying

"I just applied two coats of Fox Hunt RUFFIAN Nail Lacquer to my fingernails and I am in love. The color is perfect for fall without being pumpkin-y or school-affiliated burnt orange. The lacquer went on smoothly with full coverage and I found the brush easy to use, which is rare for this uncoordinated lefty. My nails look awesome in this color!"—GradysGal

"I love nail polish, but I am hopeless at making it look like the salon, even if I buy top-of-the-line brands. This polish is amazing. I painted my nails quickly before a week sailing in Greece. At the end of the week, this polish had BARELY even chipped!"-Ashley

These fan girls have convinced us—have you tried these miraculously long-lasting polishes?

Dispatch from Seoul: Gradient Lipstick is Huge Right Now

South Korea has become ground zero for beauty innovation in the last few years (BB creams, anyone?). Lucky for us, former Birchbox copywriter Mai is teaching English in Seoul this summer—and sending us weekly updates about her finds in beauty, food, and beyond. This week, she gives us the scoop on the hot lipstick trend sweeping the nation.

image

Korea is always one step ahead of the rest of the world when it comes to beauty trends—so allow me to predict that by this time next summer, American women will be wearing gradient lipstick, a look that’s being sported by approximately 98 percent of the female population right now in Seoul. (Okay, that’s me guesstimating a little, but it seems like everyone is wearing it!)

While this trend may sound as bold as, say, bright blue eyeliner, it’s actually demure and natural-looking when done right. I learned from my photogenic subject Irene that the best way to get the look is to start by dusting your lips with a beige face powder, apply a nude lipstick, then finish with a bolder hue. Read on to get the full scoop!

BURGUNDY HUES TAKE CENTERSTAGE AT ZAC POSEN

If designer Zac Posen’s Fall 2013 collection is any indicator of beauty trends to come, burgundy is about to have a major moment. Backstage models were sporting glossy, port-wine manis and deep plum lips. Essie’s lead manicurist Michelle Saunders told us that the lacquer hue  was chosen to match several evening dresses in the designer’s collection.

To create the look, Saunders and her crew applied two coats of essie’s Carry On. The crimson shade looked smashing, and its very apt name appropriately described the post-Nemo mood backstage.

MAC’s key makeup artist Kabuki contrasted ethereal white eye shadow with a wow-factor pout to build on the collection’s rich color story, outlining lips with the Pencil NC15 in Vino Lip Liner to keep lipstick smudge- and crease-free. Next, he applied MAC’s Lip Mix in Burgundy with a slim makeup brush.

Elaborating on the color, Kabuki explained, “I had Tilda Swinton in the back of my mind.” The finished look definitely evoked the regal actress’s elegance and boldness.

Would You Wear Braces as a Fashion Statement?

image

These Hello Kitty braces may not actually be straightening anyone’s teeth. (Photo: We Heart It)

Like many other Gen Y-ers who grew up in America, I wore braces during middle school, and to this day I still have awkward pictures of myself flashing a mouthful of metal. In my opinion, that painful dental experience is best left to the annals of yearbook history, so I was shocked to learn that Asian teens from countries like Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia are now choosing to wear fake braces as a fashion accessory. Say what?

I never would have considered paper lashes if it wasn’t for The Hunger Games movie, which showcased Effie Trinket (a.k.a. Elizabeth Bank) wearing them in tons of promo shots. I know, I totally got pulled into the whole Katniss craze!

First, a little back story: I have acne and, eh… let’s just say I’m well past my teenage years. Since I’m in that awkward place where I’m battling zits and fine lines at the same time, I try a lot of products (you should see my bathroom sink). Some products I’ve used were for zits; some were for wrinkles. But, I’ve never found anything that I could use to address both. Until now.

Hot on the heels of Refinery 29’s purple makeup story, our own Katia showed up at the office wearing violet lips. The amazingly flattering shade is Lancome’s Rouge in Love in Violette Coquette. Suffice to say, we’re all planning on running out and buying it ASAP.

Another hot spring trend? Orange. Try BY TERRY Rouge Terrybly in Frenetic Vermilion.
