Week Four: Disconnect

After making tiny tweaks to my fitness, beauty, and snacking routines, I had just one bad habit arena left to conquer: disconnecting from my phone and TV. No matter where I am, I always have my phone on me; and as far as TV goes, well let’s just say that if it’s a TV show on the air, I’m watching it. So this week, I made it a priority to put my phone down, pick up a book, and disconnect for a little while.

Week Three: Snacking Habits

Though my official title here at Birchbox is Editorial and Video Intern, my unofficial title is Queen of Snacking. As a lifelong fan of Nutella and pretzels, I love sweet and salty things. Let it be known that I also occasionally indulge in a scoop or two of ice cream—and by occasionally, I mean every night. This week, I rose to the challenge of changing my food habits by switching out the snacks and drinking more water.

Super Dad (and Fitness Pro) David Kirsch on Family-Friendly Wellness

A few weeks ago, a few members of our team had a chance to work out one-on-one with celebrity trainer David Kirsch. (Check out their awesome form!) Naturally I was way jealous. Kirsch is known for whipping stars like Heidi Klum and Ellen Barkin into shape, as well as helping regular people overhaul their diet and exercise routines. As the father of two girls, he’s also a pro at creating a healthy family life—I asked him how he does it.

1. I know you started out as a corporate lawyer. What advice do you have for people who are trying to stay balanced in the workplace?

Whether you find yourself in the corporate world, the fashion world, or the fitness world, making health and exercise a ritual is important. Find time for mini workouts—planks or crunches in the morning before you get in the shower—and put alerts in your calendar to remind you to get up and walk around hourly. I also recommend starting each day with a healthy breakfast and brown bagging your lunch.

Week Two: Beauty Routine

When I’m asked how long it takes me to get ready in the morning, my answer of two hours usually triggers a Liz Lemon-inspired "What the what?!" Taking a cue from these responses, I decided that this week would be the perfect time to make some tweaks to my beauty routine. Let me preface by saying that my two hour routine is something I truly enjoy. While it may seem excessive, I love having a leisurely morning without feeling rushed—but I will admit that I could use some more shut-eye. Read on to learn how I streamlined my routine!
