3 Simple Tips For Dark Polish: Mani Monday

As much as we love nail art, we’re better at admiring designs than coming up with them ourselves. That’s why we’ve enlisted Anna Norman, the smarty pants behind Glitter, She Wrote, to be a regular contributor. Every Monday, she’ll be sharing her latest lacquer inspiration—you won’t be satisfied with plain ol’ polish again.

With fall in full swing and Halloween just a couple days away, there’s no better time for dark, vampy nails. When I first started playing around with polish, I steered clear of darks for fear of looking too harsh, especially since my skin is so fair. But as long as you keep a few things in mind, there’s no reason to banish these shades from your nail polish repertoire. Whether you’re eyeing a deep burgundy or cutting to the chase with black, follow these tips to keep your mani stylishnever severe.

One of the season’s hottest hues: tenoverten’s Commerce shade.

Fall Foliage Nail Art: Mani Monday

As much as we love nail art, we’re better at admiring designs than coming up with them ourselves. That’s why we’ve enlisted Anna Norman, the smarty pants behind Glitter, She Wrote, to be a regular contributor. Every Monday, she’ll be sharing her latest lacquer inspiration—you won’t be satisfied with plain ol’ polish again.

I was walking down my Brooklyn street a few days ago in leather boots and a sweater, holding a pumpkin latte in hand (hello, fall!), when I noticed my neighborhood’s first changing leaves of the season. That means it’s officially autumn in my book, and of course my nails needed to reflect the exciting change.

A few weeks ago I showed you how to achieve a marbled manicure with an ordinary roll of plastic wrap, and I thought the technique would work perfectly for fall-hued nails inspired by the gorgeous reds, oranges, and yellows of the changing leaves. Here’s how to use this fool-proof technique to get the look yourself.

Think Pink Polish For Fall

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and everywhere I look, I’m seeing pink. The cheery color may seem better suited for spring and summer manis, but it’s actually one of my favorite colors to wear throughout fall and into winter. As the weather gets dreary and they days get darker, that vibrant pop of color is exactly what I need.

Here are my pink picks to carry you through the season:

tenoverten Polishes Launch Exclusively in the Birchbox Shop!

We’re exceedingly picky about our nails, which is why we’re so enamored with tenoverten. Not only are their two Manhattan salons amazing oases of calm and chic, but they have their own line of luxe polishes.

As we imagined, their lacquer collection is just as stylish as their clientele. They’re the perfect mix of neutrals and brights and each creamy shade dries to an ultra sleek finish. Plus, the formula is free of ingredients like formaldehyde and resin, meaning we can wear these without worrying about chemicals.

We could wax poetic about how much we love these hues, but we’ll let these photos do the waxing for us.

iPads and Salons, A Match Made in Tech Heaven

Many of us tote a clipping of our dream hair with us to the salon, hoping that we can get one step closer to that perfect celeb coif. Now, salons like New York City’s Salon AKS, are making the whole process easier by using iPad apps, like the MyGallery app and InStyle’s Hairstyle Try-On.

These apps allow customers and stylists to browse thousands of styles in the salon together, and even scour the latest red carpet events for inspiration. And, for the ultimate pampering experience, several salons now provide iPads for their customers to use during their appointments.

I do a decent amount of my catch-up reading while sitting in a pedicure chair, and salons like tenoverten in Tribeca have iPads to use while you get your nails done. Kiehl’s new spa, Spa 1851 set to open in July, will also have iPads for customer use. Now, if only every other store would hop on the trend, I won’t need to invest in one of my own.
