The Birchbox BBQ Survival Kit

The fourth of July means that we get two of our favorite summer activities packed into one day: 1. gorgeous fireworks and 2. endless BBQ. But as much as we would love to dive straight into the deliciousness of it all, we’ve got to be prepared for everything from stains to sunburns. Nailing It: Stain Removers

Operations associate, Loren, has a thing for nails- and we can’t blame her. We love reading about new finishes and fun techniques, so we thought we’d give her a weekly slot on our blog to wax poetic about all things manicure (and pedicure!) related. Check back every Thursday for Nailing It, Birchbox’s dedicated polish series.

I recently went on vacation to Hawaii and while I had a ton of fun in the sun, when I got back home and removed my polish, I noticed my nails had turned an unattractive yellow color. I instantly realized that I had forgotten to put on a base coat underneath my bright blue shade, which is a big no-no. Not only can skipping this step result in tawny-looking nails, but keeping your polish on too long and spending a lot of time in the sun can also leave them stained.

Luckily, there are some simple remedies for combating this unsightly look, and several can be found in your kitchen! One tip from my great grandmother is to cut a lemon into two and immerse your fingertips in the halves for a couple of minutes before going to bed. I used this approach to fix my nails after my trip and it totally worked! Another at-home cure is brushing your nails with toothpaste that contains peroxide.

There are also several great nail brightening products on the market. Essie’s White Bright Nail Pen or Beam Up Base Coat are both incredibly effective and will get your nails back to normal in no time. Another quick fix is buffing your nails (but not too much!). I really like Deborah Lippmann’s Smooth Operator.
