We love the gals over at Miss Jessie’s Original because they know everything there is to know about quality hair products and styling—especially when it comes to curls. This month, some of our subscribers received Miss Jessie’s products and you told us that you had some questions.

We were lucky enough to have co-founder and co-CEO of the brand, Titi Branch, stop by Birchbox HQ for a visit last week, and we took the opportunity to get some answers for you straight from the source. Q: How is Miss Jessie’s different from other haircare lines?

A: I think the one thing that differentiates us from other haircare lines is our level of expertise. Our products started in a salon over 16 years ago, where we saw a real need for curly-hair products. Because we started with a salon that caters to and focuses on this very particular niche, we were able to create excellent products that work. We’re a small company, but we know our haircare.

Let’s start with a quick refresher: just in case you aren’t familiar with it, the Beauty Profile is a short questionnaire that you answer which helps us pick the best samples for you based on your answers about your skin tone, your hair type and more.

After listening to all of our subscribers (yes you!) and your amazing feedback, we decided to revamp the Beauty Profile to be even better. We’ve kept some of the classic questions about your skin tone, hair type and your beauty style, but in some cases we’ve added even more selections for you to choose from and we’ve added entirely new questions!

What comes in a Birchbox?

Surprise and delight! And, of course, samples: Our women’s subscription includes four to five beauty samples across categories as well as “extras” that can be beauty-related or more lifestyle-focused (accessories, food, paper goods). The beauty samples are from prestige brands—some that are well known and others that are newly launched or small and niche. The lifestyle extras never take the place of a beauty product.
