Mingle All The Way: 10 Hairstyles to Get You Through Holiday Party Season

Holiday party season is about to kick into overdrive, and that means you need some new hair tricks to wow your friends, family, and coworkers—especially when you’re going straight from the office to the party.

1. Sock it to Me

Here at Birchbox HQ, Senior Social Media Manager Rachel reigns as the undisputed queen of the sock bun. Lucky for us, she’s willing to share the secrets behind her superior ‘do. Watch the twitter maven whip her hair into a bountiful and sleek-looking sock bun. To ace this look, start with healthy and hydrated hair. For a mini-mane makeover, we love Miss Jessie’s Leave-In Condish, which uses soybean extracts and glycerin to strengthen weak strands.

2. Keep Frizz Under Wraps

You don’t need Grace Kelly’s golden locks or summery weather to wear a hair wrap with style. Here are four easy ways to wear our favorite static-busting hair accessory and look incredibly glamorous while you’re at it. Make sure to smooth out stray flyaways with a small, round brush like Keratherapy’s Square Ceramic Curling Brush

3. Don’t Go Chasing Waterfalls (But Do Try this Waterfall Braid)

So you’ve mastered the French braid and aced the fishtail. Now what? The waterfall braid is the next big trend in braids—and it looks way more complicated than it actually is. This technique might take a bit of practice, but once you get the hang of it you’ll be braiding up a storm.

4. Live Happily Ever After with the Princess Roll

This hairstyle is about to become one of your go-to looks. It’s a classic, chic style that’s fitting for a day at the office or a weekend rendezvous. Best of all it takes less than five minutes, and anyone with medium-length to long hair can pull it off. All you need is a sturdy headband and some hairspray to finish. Watch to find out why our entire office loves the “Princess Roll.”

5. Feeling Fishy

Much like Shaggy’s dancehall hit It Wasn’t Me,” the basic French braid is so 2001. Right now, it’s all about the classic staple’s modern-looking successor: the French fishtail. This style is dressy and easier than it looks; it will have your holiday party date complimenting you on your creativity.

6. Make Waves

When we say our co-founder Katia’s hair inspires envy all over our office, it’s no joke. So we jumped on the chance to see exactly how she gets her signature waves. Turns out that her technique is quick and easy enough to do in twenty minutes before work.

7. Heavy is the Head that Wears the Crown Braid

In another video favorite starring Katia, our fearless leader demonstrates how to get a pretty crown braid. Perfect for hot and cold weather alike, its a fool-proof way to camouflage slightly dirty hair and jazz up last year’s party frock.

8. A Tall (Pony) Tail

From your SO’s office party to your family’s Thanksgiving feast, this new take on the topsy tail (yes, that topsy tail) is sophisticated enough for any event. To make sure your upgraded pony stays sleek all night long, spritz on multitasking uniqONE All In One Hair Treatment, a lightweight styling mist that tames frizz, detangles, and demands more volume from limp strands.

9. We’re Mad for Mad Men-Inspired Bouffants

As if there weren’t enough reasons to love Mad Men, the women of the show have been sporting some majorly enviable hair height. Inspired by 1960s bouffant hairstyles, this piece-of-cake tutorial shows you how to get big hair with a retro twist. Watch to learn how to get this look in just a few simple steps

10. The Braid-y Bunch

Meet the “Brunch Braid” (a.k.a. an upside-down French braid with a bun). This off-duty style can spice up last minute gatherings and otherwise-dull gift shopping. Re-create the look with this step by step tutorial

3 Ways to Save Time Getting Ready: Videos of the Month

We spend a lot (read: an almost embarrassing amount) of time on YouTube. We’re always searching for new tutorials, unboxings, hauls—really anything fun. This month, we came across some time-saving tutorials that we just had to share. From nails to hair, these videos will have you looking good faster than you can say Birchbox.

There is just never enough time to let your nails fully dry. Cutepolish saves the day with the five tips that will take you from wet to set in a flash.

Shaving a couple minutes in the morning, especially on those days when you can’t stop hitting the snooze button, is extra valuable. lilifeefifofum has a crazy quick tip to get your top and bottom lash lines done all in one swipe. We couldn’t believe how great it looked and can’t wait to test it out.

We’re all about sock buns and top knots here at Birchbox. Melissa Raymond reiterates (with the cutest accent we’ve ever heard) just how fast and fabulous sock buns can be.

Birchbox Hair Crush: Stylist Sarah Potempa

Few things get us as excited as an amazing hair day (it’s the simple things in life, right?). If there’s anyone who knows how to take a blah-day to absolutely stellar, it’s stylist Sarah Potempa.

After working with stars like Michelle Williams and Lea Michele, and creating her own line of strand-saving tools (a QVC regular), it’s clear that there are few who can better handle a stubborn mane quite like she can. But don’t take our word for it—read on to find out more about one of our fave Hollywood mane mavens, and hear about the amazing tool she developed to get you the perfect beachy waves.

1. Can you tell us a little bit about your background?

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always loved styling hair. When I first moved to New York City, I began assisting some incredibly talented artists like Recine and Danilo in their editorial campaigns before being signed by The Wall Group. I love my job because everyday is different. One day I will be working with celebrity clients such as Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen or Jake Gyllenhaal and the next I’ll be creating editorial hair on the beach. In addition to styling hair, I have also been a spokesperson for Aussie hair products for 5 years.

Then a few years ago, I started my own company SARAHPOTEMPA, Inc and in January 2012 we launched our tools on QVC.

How To: Sock Bun Tutorial with The Wrap Up

In the summer, I always look for the easiest and quickest hairstyle option on the days I can’t be bothered with my long hair. One of my favorite go-to looks is the classic top knot. While it may seem like a simple hairdo, it can be a little tricky to get perfectly right. SarahPotempa’s The WRAP UP™ is a new tool to the Birchbox Shop that makes it super easy for me to roll my hair up and away from my face, keeping me cool while still looking polished. What makes it even better is that it secures the bun in place without bobby pins! Check out the video to learn how to use The Wrap Up to get that perfect sock bun because this look isn’t going anywhere.

The Bridal Bun:

We’ve been planning our dream weddings since we were five years old. So it’s no surprise that we can’t get enough of, a wedding inspiration site that lets you search through pics of swoon-worthy gowns, bouquets, and everything else you need for the big day. Once a week, the ladies behind will be sharing their best tips for getting through the craziness of the season—whether you’re standing at the altar or enjoying a view of it from the audience.

When it comes to wedding hairstyles, our current favorite is the bun. It’s such a classic look, but still feels fresh when paired with today’s bridal styles. Anyone can master this no-fuss look and it works for brides, bridesmaids, and guests. Here are our favorite versions from

2. This blonde bride is rocking the sock bun and it looks absolutely elegant. (Jessica May Photography on Equally Wed via

5. We love the idea of a high bun for your entire bridal party! It helps create a more coordinated look that doesn’t draw attention away from the bride. (Jonathan Wherrett on Polka Dot Bride via
