Our idea of a wonder ingredient? Virgin coconut oil. You can slather, drizzle, and sauté your way to better skin and nutrition with this miracle-worker. Here are just a few of its many uses.

Daily Moisturizer: Loaded with fatty acids that are native to skin, Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO, for short) replaces lipids that we lose to aging and dehydration. It also creates a healthier balance of saturated-to-unsaturated fatty acids in skin cells, which repairs damage from aging, the sun and other environmental factors. In addition, VCO provides anti-aging benefits like enabling skin to form more anti-inflammatory cell hormones to reduce skin damage.

VMV Hypoallergenics Answers: What Does Hypoallergenic Really Mean?

One letter can spell a world of difference. In Greek, the prefix “hyper” means more. “Hypo” means less. Hence the term “hypoallergenic,” which is quickly becoming a buzzword in the world of skincare. “Hypoallergenic” is frequently confused with claims like “dermatologist-tested”, “skin-safe” and “natural”, but there is a fundamental difference. VMV Hypoallergenics Answers: How Can I Create Skin Goals?

For those with sensitive skin, VMV Hypoallergenics is a dream come true. You really can achieve your skin goals. But like most resolutions, you need a clear action plan. Start by setting S.M.A.R.T. skin goals: Skin-specific. Measurable. Actionable. Realistic. Time-Bound.

Skin-Specific: Make sure your goals take into account your particular skin’s behavior, history, and current state.

Measurable: Keep a journal and work closely with your dermatologist and your VMV aesthetician to make sure you monitor your progress more accurately. Reading about how your skin is improving can really boost your confidence and keep you motivated, or help you fine tune your regimen.

What is sensitive skin? Sensitive has become a bit of a catch-all term to define a wide variety of skin conditions, from medically-managed diseases to acne and everything in between. It does cover a broad range of concerns but, strictly speaking, ‘sensitive’ refers to skin that tends to experience sensations like stinging, burning, prickling, tingling, itching, or slight pain, with or without redness, swelling or other signs of irritation. (A tendency towards acne isn’t usually considered sensitivity.)

What causes sensitive skin? There are several possibilities including contact or photocontact dermatitis, which are allergic or irritant reactions to chemicals (including natural extracts—remember natural ingredients are also chemicals). Most people who develop such reactions have an allergic tendency, often with a background of atopic dermatitis, asthma, rhinitis, or reactions to drugs or to their jewelry, foods, clothing, cosmetics, or other things. Dry weather can either cause or worsen sensitivity. And if skin gets so dry that it cracks, microorganisms can enter the fissures and cause more dryness and sensitivity.

Brighter Skin in Ten Minutes with Juice Beauty

image

I was at a Juice Beauty media lunch the other day, and in addition to gossiping about recent online scandals, I also got a real-time reminder that Juice’s products really, really work. It sounds like the tagline of an informercial but Juice Beauty’s Green Apple Peel Full Strength does give an instant boost to your skin, without any gimmicks. Unlike many so-called natural lines, Juice Beauty uses an organic juice solution as their base instead of water. This brings the organic content in their products up to a whopping 98 percent, unlike many brands which have organic content hovering around 5 percent.

Now back to that extra brightening peel. It uses an hydroxy acid complex of organic apple, lemon, grape juices, raw cane sugar and white willow bark to brighten and exfoliate so by the time you rinse off your mask (after 10-15 minutes) you’ll see a noticeable difference. Natural products tend to have a reputation for being less effective but you’ll feel these enzymes going to work as soon as you put the peel on your skin. It’s normal for your skin to feel a bit tingly and look a bit pink, but if it’s uncomfortable they also have a version for sensitive skin. Have you used this peel?

June Jacobs Answers: Aside From Products, How Else Can I Care For My Skin?

At Birchbox, we’re lucky to have access to the best minds in the beauty business. One of our most trusted gurus is June Jacobs, who created her eponymous skincare line over 30 years ago. It now consists of more than 100 professional and retail products, all designed to be efficacious and all-natural. Jacobs is so discerning about her formulas that she even opened her own independent laboratory, June Jacobs Labs, to whip up her special concoctions. Over the next week, the epidermis expert is giving us her best advice on everything from fall must-haves to getting the most out of her best-selling Papaya Purifying Enzyme Masque.

"Aside from using effective skincare products, beautiful skin can be a result of being happy and feeling healthy. Taking care of yourself by drinking six glasses of  water a day, eating healthy foods, and exercising regularly all lead to good skin. It is also very important to eliminate — or at least minimize — stress, which tends to speed up the process of aging. I like to get a massage once a week, and I unwind from a stressful day by taking a warm bath and lighting candles to make my bathroom feel like a spa."

June Jacobs Answers: How Can I Get More Out Of My Papaya Enzyme Masque?

"My Papaya Purifying Enzyme Masque is for all skin types, including sensitive. You should use this masque two to three times a week — after taking a shower because the steam helps to activate the masque — to remove dead surface skin cells and reveal fresher, younger looking skin.

One of my best tricks is to apply the masque to elbows, knees, and heels before going to bed. These areas will feel amazingly soft and smooth by the morning.”

Dr. Michelle Copeland’s New Face Lift In A Jar

This morning at a breakfast uptown, I met with Dr. Michelle Copeland, a plastic surgeon has a refreshing take on the aging game. She says, “It’s nice to see people in their twenties taking better care of their skin because that means people are needing less and less plastic surgery.” I guess she has competing interests because this M.D. also has her own skincare line (as well as her D.M.D., F.A.C.S, and her P.C…yes, she’s very accomplished).

I chatted up the super smart doctor as she was celebrating the launch of her newest product, Emerge Facelift Cream With Lavender ($119.20). We started talking about what makes the formula so effective. “There are thirteen active ingredients,” explains Dr. Copeland of the anti-oxidant and medicinal lavender-rich blend. But she was eager to stress that the large number of potent actives doesn’t mean that there are lots of unnecessary chemicals in the cream. “It’s important for people to pay attention to the additives in their products, which is why we always keep them to a minimum.” Love that philosophy!
