Memorial Day Must-Haves: Alyssa

This weekend marks the official start of summer, which means that Birchboxers have plans to kick back, rest up, and hopefully bask in some serious sunshine. We asked several of our staffers where they’re headed (stay-cations sound as enticing as traveling) and the must-have product they’re bringing along. Here’s what graphic designer Alyssa had to say.

Sircuit Cosmeceuticals Molecular Mist will definitely be my go-to product all weekend while I’m in Brooklyn and enjoying a couple BBQs. I like to feel refreshed, and this stuff is amazing.

Sircuit is one of our fave science-y brands. Learn more about the advanced technology they use

Packing List: Preparing for Baby!

We love babies around here (who doesn’t?) and a few months ago were thrilled to find out that our Production Manager Alicia was expecting a little peanut herself. The months have certainly flown by and baby will finally be arriving next week! Alicia has her hospital bag packed and ready to go at a moment’s notice. Since she’s working from home until the big day, we asked her to send us a picture of what she’s bringing. Here’s what she’s bringing so she’s comfortable and prepared for her new baby boy:

A Case for Serums (And Why I Love Sircuit Weapon)

Before I started writing about beauty, I had no idea what a serum was or why I might want to put it on my face. I quickly learned that serums, which are skincare products with a very high concentration of active ingredients, were the key to targeting specific skin issues. (For more, read our cheat sheet.) Unlike moisturizers, which primarily hydrate, serums can address things like acne, hyperpigmentation, premature wrinkles, rosacea…really anything. Suffice it to say, I’ve become a bit of a junkie, and I’m as picky about my serums as Meredith is about her SPF. I’ve learned how to read ingredient lists, and to decipher what’s worth the money and what I can skip.

For example, one of my current favorites is Sircuit Cosmeceuticals’s Weapon, which is $85 for one ounce. At first that might seem spendy, but there’s not a bit of fat in the product. It’s a lean, mean, skin-perfecting machine. First off, it has ten percent L-Ascrobic Acid, the chirally correct form of Vitamin C— this helps encourage collagen production (which fills out any premature lines or wrinkles), protect against UV damage, and prevent hyperpigmentation. While Vitamin C is the star of Weapon, there are plenty of other ingredient helpers: Witch Hazel, which soothes any irritations; Sodium Hyaluronate, which rehydrates skin; and Phytoalexin Complex, a blend of antioxidants. I apply a couple drops at night (the eyedropper makes sure I don’t waste any of the product!) after cleanser and toner, and I’ve noticed that my skin seems brighter (even on less sleep) with fewer dark spots. I’m still waiting for my pores to disappear but Rachel, our resident skin expert, swears that there’s a serum for that.

Do you use serums? What are your favorites?

Back to the Beach: You’ve Got Male

Once a week, Birchbox’s resident yoga and men’s product expert, Eric, will gives us girls some insight into his world in You’ve Got Male. Whether he’s giving his expertise on skincare (boys need advice, too!) or highlighting his new favorite grooming trend, this guy has got taste—so we’re lucky he’s on staff and willing to share.

As unusual as this is for me, I didn’t make it to the beach until Fourth of July weekend this year. Between keeping busy in the Birchbox office and weekend events in NYC, I hadn’t been able to make a trip. Being back at the beach is fun and relaxing, but I was reminded how it can wreak havoc on your skin and hair. Here are a few of my must-haves when at the seashore.

Tocca SPF 30+ Towelette in Stella: Although Stella may be a bit girly for some of the guys out there, the scent is light and not overbearing. A great improvement from your drugstore SPF scent! These towelettes are individually wrapped and measure 8” x 8”. I use one for each half of my body and they work like a dream. Forget the mess of liquid sunscreen and the splotchy results you get with a spray!

SIRCUIT® Cosmeceuticals Molecular Mist: I sprayed the Molecular Mist on my face and neck before, during, and after visiting the beach and it did an amazing job of keeping my skin hydrated and cool. The 2 oz size makes it easy to throw in your bag and the ‘heavy water’ complex used in the formula is ideal for long-lasting hydration.

Amika Obliphica Hair Treatment: After frolicking in the surf and sitting out in the sun, my hair can be left stripped and coarse. Also, given that the beach tends to be a pretty humid place, it’s important to tame frizz. I love the Amika Obliphica Hair Treatment because it restores shine and health and deals with frizz and fly-aways without being too heavy.

Stay tuned for more of my beach and summer picks coming soon in You’ve Got Male! In the meantime, check out some more summer products in our Birchbox Shop.

Packing List: Israel

While summer weddings season is in full swing, this is also the time of year when many of us take our most relaxing, anticipated vacation. For months I’ve been daydreaming about my 10-day trip to Israel, where my family and friends are so hasty to receive me—and now it’s finally here! Take a look at what I’ll be bringing along:

Mikoh Brazilian Bikini: For months I have pictured myself basking on Tel Aviv’s Mediterranean beach in this baby bright blue bikini. Mikoh is a relatively new Brazilian swimwear brand and makes bikinis like no other. Try one on and see for yourself.

Laura Geller Baked Blush-N-Brighten in Honey Dipped: Thanks to my June Birchbox, I’ve got a full-sized bronzer to take with me. I’m going for low-key make-up on this trip, and this compact is perfect to give my cheeks that extra glow.

Tierra Fresh-water Pearl Body Chain Necklace: I came across this store about a year ago on the corner of Spring and Lafayette in SoHo and when I saw this necklace, I couln’t live without it. The number of ways you can wear it are endless and it’s perfect for beach weather.

Marvis Classic Strong Mint (travel size) Toothpaste, Tatcha Blotting Papers, Sircuit Cosmeceuticals Molecular Mist, and Herban Essentials Towelettes: I am not an airplane type of gal, so this time I’ve planned to make my 11 hour flight as easy as possible. I insist on being clean, fresh, and hydrated when I step off that plane, not to mention totally chic with my Birchbox Travel Pouch!

Zoya Polish in Jules: I received this sample in my second Birchbox and I can’t get enough. This radiant color goes with everything. Fancy or casual—it’s become my go-to.

Az yallah, kadeemah! See you in two weeks!

Happy Summer! Five Things To Do With Your Extra Time.

Well, it’s finally here guys: Summer! Today, June 21st, marks the Summer Solstice, or the longest day of the year. Before you get all excited, keep in mind that today is really only about two seconds longer than yesterday. With that said, there are TONS of things you can accomplish in those two seconds. Don’t believe me? Read it and weep (with happiness):

1.     Dismiss Oily Skin: TATCHA Aburatorigami blotting papers soak up excess oil from your face instantly.

2.     Hydrate Dry Skin: On the other hand, you can also hydrate your cakey, dehydrated skin and keep makeup in place with a single spritz of Sircuit Molecular Mist.

3.     Glossify Your Lips: Jouer Moisturizing Lip Gloss comes in five shimmery shades, all subtle enough to apply without a mirror.

4.     Get a Tan: Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Glow Pads are a tan and exfoliator in a towelette. Swipe these on in two seconds (making sure you get all areas of your face and décolletage evenly) and your tan will develop over the next three hours.

5.     Get Shiny, Shiny Hair: Shu Uemura Essence Absolue delivers perfect hair with one pump. Work it from mid-lengths through the ends (one Miss-iss-ipp-i) for a high gloss effect.
