Emily Loftiss, of Loftiss Says…, is a style and beauty maven who can take even the worst fashion debacle and make it a winning situation—who else could turn an old, too-small dress into an awesome style find from your own closet? This week, she’s telling us her top shopping picks for the holidays, her 5-minute trick to scoring gorgeous night out makeup, and more.

This product is magical in every way—it gives you a gorgeous, healthy glow! Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be able to have that golden look. Plus, the packets are perfect for traveling too!
Girl Around Town co-founders, Leigh Evans and Mary Cunningham, created an online community for women to talk about the latest in fashion, beauty, food, and more. The site boasts jet-setting writers who are based in Los Angeles, Houston, and New York, all of whom have the insider deets on the hottest things to do and see all over the globe.
You might think it’s stressful to have a friend who’s a crowned beauty queen—and okay, sometimes it is when you’re comparing your picture poses and smiles to hers—but if you keep your eyes and ears open, you’ll get tips on products that you might not always think about or prioritize. From nights out in New York City to semi-formal Southern weddings, we’ve spent hours in prep with our beauty queen bestie and picked up these regal tips.
1. Key beauty ingredient to know: Retinol. Mary is a very pale person, and has shied away from Retinol-filled creams for fear of a burn. But when used properly, the vitamin A derivative enhances the appearance of skin in the most important ways: it fights fine lines and sun spots, loosens blackheads, quells breakouts and helps shed pore-clogging dead skin cells, leaving complexions softer and more radiant.
With three new additions, our hard-working operations team just keeps growing and growing. Meet Anastasia who was an Admissions Counselor at Drew University, Christine who worked as a Club Coordinator at Flywheel, and Molly who recently graduated from Vassar College where she studied English and women’s studies. We’re so happy these bubbly ladies found their way to Birchbox—their positive spirits and can-do attitudes brighten the office.

A proud Texas Longhorn, Deepica has brought a perky piece of the Lone Star state to the Birchbox office. Before we were lucky enough to snag her, Deepica worked at Victoria’s Secret in Columbus, Ohio. We like to think our endless charm convinced her to move to New York, but we know it’s probably more to do with her undeniable love for and knowledge of all things beauty. The youngest of over 20 cousins (and those are only first cousins, mind you!), this gal knows how to stand out in a crowd with her bubbly demeanor, effortless style—and a hot, hot shade of lipstick, of course!
Karl Lagerfeld will collaborate with Shu Uemura on a limited edition holiday makeup collection this fall. Photo: WWD
Karl Lagerfeld has been using Shu Uemura makeup for over 20 years—just not in the way you might think. Aside from his main gig at Chanel, the designer is also known for his illustrations, which often grace the fashion house’s invitations and press kits. Those illustrations are always created with Shu Uemura makeup. He told WWD he uses the brand’s products “because other manufacturers do not offer such beautiful colors.”
Birchbox staffers have been known to play the beauty field. With so many fun samples floating around, can you blame us for having a hard time committing? Then again, when we find something we love, we stick to it. In this new feature, we’ll be asking Birchbox staffers to share the products they just can’t quit. First up, co-founder and braid guru, Katia.
Katia, Birchbox Co-founder
Beauty profile: Combination skin, thick and dry hair, adventurous/trendy.
Products I can’t quit:
Benefit They’re Real: Seriously obsessed. It is a magical mascara. Gives you drama without creating clumps, and doesn’t move all day. I love that it’s dark black, but still looks pretty and natural.
Shu Uemura Cleansing Oil Shampoo: This smells amazing and deeply cleans without drying out my hair. I think I am producing less oil in my hair since starting to use it months ago.
Boscia Luminizing Black Mask: This peel-off treatment is so gratifying! Black is genius because you can see everything that happens (or comes off). It clears pores without the unwelcome drama of home extractions.
Anastasia Brow Wiz: I won’t leave home without this. It makes a huge difference and you can easily control how much of an impact (or lack of impact) you want to make.
Bonus! Latest discoveries:
Talika Lipcoils Expert: Two weeks in, I see a small difference, and there are no bad side effects! All other lash serums make my eyes burn.
