I have a teeny tiny shoe addiction, with a particular weakness for pretty leather boots in the winter. Not only are they stylish and totally comfortable, the knee-high variety keep my lower extremities warm once temperatures drop into the freezing range. (If you’re in New York right now, you know exactly what I mean—it feels like single digits outside!) The only pitfall? Most leather booties weren’t designed to stand up to slush, rain, and dirty gutter puddles.
Luckily, Birchbox Man has pulled together three easy-to-use tips to help me weather-proof all my footwear. From the natural water-repelling bar you have to try to the pantry ingredients you can use to get rid of nasty salt stains, here’s what you need to know to winter-proof your leather shoes.
Another common shoe snafu I run into? Walking in high heels—here’s how to get the most from your stilettos.
Girl Around Town co-founders, Leigh Evans and Mary Cunningham, created an online community for women to talk about the latest in fashion, beauty, food, and more. The site boasts jet-setting writers who are based in Los Angeles, Houston, and New York, all of whom have the insider deets on the hottest things to do and see all over the globe.
All shoes can be found on piperlime.com; polishes are available at essie.com or opi.com.
During the spring and summer there’s nothing I love more than getting the perfect pedicure to go with my newly purchased sandals—a pop of color on the toes can make a shoe go from good to great. But, as fall and winter roll around and my shoes go from strappy to closed-toe, I like to move that pop of color from my toes to my hands. Bold manicures are incredibly fun and there’s no reason they shouldn’t match your new fall shoes as well. From oxfords to knee-high boots, from rich yellows to deep purples, there are fun combinations to be had all season long—take a peek above for the pairings that I love.

A new psych study out of the Univeristy of Kansas suggests that your choice of footwear reveals a surprising amount about who you are. In their experiment, when subjects saw pictures of a stranger’s shoes, they were highly likely to guess the personality traits that their owner identified with. Intrigued by these findings, we decided to conduct an experiment of our own here at Birchbox HQ. Judging from these staffers’ footwear choices, can you guess how they describe themselves? In other words, are we sending signals with our shoes? Read on to see what our sleuthing turned up!

Today’s Footwear: 80%20 boat-shoe inspired wedges
"I just bought these to be my new everyday summer shoe. I love being in heels so I went with a wedge over flats, but they have to be comfortable. I think these say I’m casual and laid-back, but not afraid to take a fashion risk!"
The argument’s been made before to pick a comfy pair of flats over a pair of sexy Louboutins, but now the point has been underscored even more. A new study done on young women has shown that wearing high heels for extended periods of time actually changes the physical makeup of your calves—and could increase your chance for injury. Argh, shoe quandary!
