A few months ago, we wrote about why Birchbox has a shop and the connection between full-size product sales and unlocking high quality samples for our subscribers. It’s the virtuous cycle of Birchbox! We also shared our goal of building you the best beauty and lifestyle ecommerce experience and asked for your suggestions. We loved your ideas!
We wanted to report back with a few progress updates. Since we last checked in, we’ve added a product recommendation feature to every product page and tested a way for you to choose additional samples each month. We’ll also be expanding our free shipping policy in October to include all products from sampled brands instead of just the specific products we sampled.
What do you guys think? Steady progress? We have many more features in the works that we can’t wait to share! In the meantime, we thought we’d share some behind the scenes info about what customers are loving this month.

If you’ve already received your September Birchbox, you might have noticed that there’s something a little different inside: our first look book! This 20-page mini mag highlights 10 of our favorite fall trends, all modeled by Birchbox staffers. We shot everything on a single, very warm day in July, on location in Brooklyn. Hair whiz Anna Schneider and makeup guru Stefanie Syat created the looks—and kept them intact, despite the humidity. We were lucky enough to snag photographer Tara Donne to take the gorgeous pictures. Naturally, there were plenty of snacks along the way—including delicious whoopie pies from One Girl Cookies, which was also the setting for two of the shots. Here’s a look behind the scenes!

No other season makes us want to revamp our closet quite like fall. As much as we’d love to spend our entire paychecks on new pieces, silly things like rent and bills get in the way. That’s why we called on Madewell’s head designer, Kin Ying Lee, to help us decide what we should invest in. Here’s what she had to say about the items (and products!) you need to own this season.

Birchbox: What’s the one fall fashion trend everyone should try?
Lee: An animal print sweater is pretty irresistible, and so perfect for chilly fall days. Ours has a pyramid of sheep on it (and they’re wearing socks, too!).
BB: What jeans will you be living in this fall?
Lee: I can’t wait to wear our Skinny Skinny High Riser Jeans in black. You can wear them with everything and they’re so, so slimming, which is a bonus.
BB: What are the top three staples every woman should have in her wardrobe right now?
First, a seriously great pair of slim jeans like our Skinny Skinny or Skinny Skinny High Riser. Second, something bold like a bright silk blouse, patterned sweater, or colorful bag. It adds a little excitement to your everyday. Third, a pair of our Sidewalk Skimmers. Flats are always in style and ours come in rich colors and patterns.
During fashion week we hosted a pop-up “Sample Stop”, a place for bloggers and editors to take a moment between shows to plug in, unwind, and stock up on beauty samples and on-the-go necessities.
The space was a huge hit and so beautiful, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to share it with our customers. On Monday, subscribers joined us for a night of pampering (think Benefit brow shapings, Fresh makeup touch-ups, Color Club manis, and Aveda updos) and a live performance by music industry darling Tristan Prettyman.

Even though as editors we get to test thousands of products to find our favorites, it’s secretly our dream to be able to mix up our own products and colors. So it was quite a thrill to team up with Color Club to create our own custom nail polish colors for fall, which will be going out in all September boxes! The process started with our team pouring over loads of fall fashion week images for inspiration. After some debate, we settled on a classic dark grey, a rose gold, a bright cobalt blue, and an eye-catching chartreuse.

Once we had our ideal shades in mind, it was time to visit Color Club’s headquarters to start creating the formulas. The whole process took several hours of back and forth as a chemist worked his magic mixing pigments, adding a touch more opaqueness here and a pinch of brighter there. In the end, we left with four gorgeous shades that we’re thrilled to share. Click through to see the final lineup:
