Customer Love Notes: Say Hello to This Best-Selling Scent

Nerd alert: One of our favorite things to do is read the customer reviews in the Birchbox Shop. You all are an opinionated bunch—and we like it! We especially adore when you write about your favorite purchases. From time to time, we’ll be highlighting some of your extra sweet product love letters on the blog.

If Lionel Richie’s 1984 hit taught us anything, it’s the importance of saying, “Hello.—and nothing says it better than this standout fragrance. A longtime Birchbox best-seller, Harvey Prince’s Hello perfectly balances top notes of Meyer lemons and Satsuma mandarin with summery floral scents like forsythia and pink plumeria. We could wax poetic about its hypnotic powers, but we’ll let these Harvey Prince fans take over:

"I don’t usually bother with perfumes, but this fragrance is so delightful it’s worth making an exception! The scent is light, dynamic, and distinctive. And while scents are definitely a subjective thing (my sister and I are constantly at odds over what scents we like and dislike), I can honestly say when I wore this everyone I interacted with commented positively on how great I smelled! - Beth

"Oh the wonders of Harvey Prince! This is the first perfume company I fell in love with. I love that it makes me [feel] more cheerful and bubbly—Any time I dread having to make an acquaintance of someone, I spritz a little of this and voilà! I’m suddenly much more excited and ready to take on the world. Thank you Birchbox for opening my eyes to such a wonderful fragrance, and thank you Harvey Prince for making such a perfect concoction! Strongly recommend!" Heather

"As one reviewer said, this is a very "optimistic" perfume, with wonderful floral and citrus scents. My boyfriend, who normally grimaces when I put on perfume, kept coming over to smell the scent! Definitely a keeper." - Kate

These ladies have us convinced—have you tried this one-of-a-kind fragrance?

Inspired by vibrant SoCal beaches and chic Parisian cafés, Joie’s Folle de Joie eau de parfum is an uplifting and memorable perfume. But don’t just take our word for it—here’s a peek at what several adoring customers had to say about this one-of-a-kind fragrance:

"I completely love this scent…the description accurately portrays how I feel when I put this on. I get compliments from many people and I really feel like a young adult when I wear this. I saved up a long time because i HAD to have it. It’s the only perfume i have ever been compelled to buy. Thank you!"Ssstephanie

ABC’s Revenge Gets A Perfume

image

The Birchbox staff loves Revenge. From the amazing clothes to the plot twists, it’s an office-wide obsession. Even though we always tune in, we never saw this coming: The show has just launched its own perfume called Double Infinity. (For those who aren’t fanatics, the fragrance’s name is a reference to a symbol that has significant meaning within the storyline.)

3 Spring Trends and Fragrances to Add to Your Wardrobe (Now!)

image

We approach scents much like we do our wardrobe: mixing, matching, and rotating fragrances throughout the season. Is it any wonder that our favorite fashion looks tend to influence both our outfits and our spritzes? While reporting at the Fall/Winter 2013 shows, we spotted three trends that we can’t wait to add to our closets. And since we’re never ones to selectively shop, here are the fragrances that will be joining our fragrance wardrobe.

In the 9th century, Persian women and men crushed thousands of fresh blossoms to score a few drops of sweet-smelling oil. Like these ancient beauty gurus (and early Birchbox Men), I have my own perfume ritual.

Every couple months, I rearrange my prized—and ever-growing—perfume collection and choose one bottle (and therefore one scent) to take center stage. (Dorky, I know!) But it keeps me from falling into a rut and forces me to cycle through all my favorites. This month, I’m loving Juicy Couture’s latest scent, Juicy Couture La La, which makes me feel ultrafeminine.

With bright opening notes that mellow into a body of soft floral notes,  the blend is fresh and pretty without being overtly girly. It’s the perfect thing to pair with a vintage cocktail ring, cashmere sweater, and cigarette pants—or maybe just your usual jeans and tee.

Beyond the packaging and lush scent, I love that Juicy created Juicy Couture La La as an ode to fearless free spirits. Every time I wear it I can’t help thinking of the free spirit who inspired my perfume mantra: Andy Warhol. The iconic artist once explained,

“I switch perfumes all the time. If I’ve been wearing one perfume for three months, I force myself to give it up, even if I still feel like wearing it, so whenever I smell it again it will always remind me of those three months.”

What new scent are you adding to your fragrance wardrobe?

Why Birchbox Customers Love Aerie’s Shimmer Perfume

image

As much as I love complex scents, I find that too many fragrance notes can sometimes go from head-turning to overwhelming in a single spritz. That’s how I came to adore aerie’s soft shimmer. This chic scent is perfect for those days when you’d rather let your statement necklace be the focus of your outfit—and not your perfume.

Shimmer is a lightweight fragrance blend featuring some of my favorite notes (vanilla, bergamot, peony), and the pretty frosted glass bottle is a fun addition to the growing perfume collection on my ever-crowded vanity. And if you’re still on the fence about switching to a pared down fragrance check out what some of our savvy customers have to say:

Daydreamer256 says: ”I’m quite picky about fragrances, but I really loved this one. It’s light and fresh. It could easily be worn to work without overwhelming the office. I would definitely consider this as my new perfume when I run out of my current one.”

Guest Blogger: Sniffapalooza Tours London

Afternoon tea at Fortnum & Mason

Linda Pilkington of Ormonde Jayne

This week we tapped Karen Adams, the executive operations manager of the event-based fragrance group Sniffapalooza, to guest blog about some of the best scents she’s discovered on her recent travels. Today’s jaunt: London.

The bustling city streets, chic fashion, the Underground, the West End Theatre District…there are so many parallels between London and New York, yet so many differences to explore. We loved the streets of well-kept row houses adorned with flower boxes. And it’s so easy to acclimate to the delightful daily custom of afternoon tea. (Especially when the tea is served at Fortnum & Mason and the host is Victoria Christian of Clive Christian Perfumes.) We spent our London days studying the history of fragrance with Roja Dove at the Haute Parfumerie in Harrods, and delighting in private tours of Liberty and Selfridges. One of London’s treasures, tucked away at 12 The Royal Arcade 28 Old Bond Street, is the Ormonde Jayne Boutique. Perfumer Linda Pilkington presented her luxurious niche line and did perfume portraits to help us choose a favorite scent. We fancied the Tolu Collection for its velvety resins of golden frankincense, tolu, and myrrh.

This week we tapped Karen Adams, one of the co-founders of the event-based fragrance group Sniffapalooza, to guest blog about some of the best scents she’s discovered on her recent travels. First stop: Los Angeles.

As much as we love NYC—after all, some of the best fragrance shopping is found right here in the Big Apple—we also love to travel and sniff out the next great scent. One of our recent journeys brought us cross-country to Apothia at Fred Segal in Los Angeles where Sniffapalooza LA was hosted by Apothia’s president and founder, Ron Robinson. We gathered fifty fragrance fans at Mauro’s Café for a delicious breakfast, camaraderie, and an impressive agenda of perfumer presentations. Great shopping at Apothia Beauty (and a few celebrity sightings) followed. We just love this stylish boutique and its carefully edited selection of the best new and classic niche scents. We especially appreciate that Ron is a true scent connoisseur, creating his own Apothia Los Angeles line of fine fragrances and interior aromatics. We’re partial to the Apothia Juiced Candle, which has a sparkling scent of red currant with green touches of geranium and tomato leaf. This lively fragrance transports us right back to lush Los Angeles.

Our favorite Apothia candle is their signature If scent with its light, fresh, and floral aroma.
