Guest Blogger: (After)Sun Shine

Certainly not all style blogs are worth reading, but we’re absolutely smitten with Sonia Evers’ Runway Hippie and we think it should be on your radar. Aside from her daily dose of inspiration, great finds, or personal pics, Evers also finds time to contribute to Refinery29.com, Modelina.com, and Glamour.com. Check back here all week as she muses on all things summer fun, from self-tanner to beachy waves.

By the end of the summer my hair feels more like straw than actual strands of hair. Thanks to the humidity, the sun, the chlorine, and other dehydrators, my hair becomes dry, brittle and full of split ends thus making me the perfect candidate for horrendously frizzy hair. After having to cut off five inches of my long locks one summer due to excessive split ends (and the fact that the bottom half of my hair was dyed green from chlorine), I learned my lesson in proper summer hair care.

I use Moroccan Oil Hydrating Styling Cream everyday — no joke, this stuff changed my life. I also use Frederic Fekkai’s Protein Reparative Treatment Mask once a week to lock in moisture and keep my hair strong and healthy. And if I’ve been extra naughty and spent a few too many hours basking in the sun, I coat the ends of hair in Aveda’s After-Sun Hair Masque, which keeps them from fraying and breaking. A bit extreme? Yes. But the difference that these few techniques made in my hair last summer was priceless. My hairdresser even told me so.

When it comes to makeup, I’m all about a natural look so dewy skin is one of my biggest go-tos. I love how my complexion shimmers slightly in the light, my eyes and cheekbones look accentuated, and my face looks fresh and energized. Aside from being one of the prettier makeup tricks I’ve learned, it also happens to be one of the easiest. All you need is the right cosmetics and you’ve got yourself a healthy glow! Above are my favorite products when it comes to perfecting dewy skin.

Guest Blogger: 4 Foolproof Self-Tanners

St. Tropez Self-Tan Bronzing Mousse, $30, sttropeztan.com; Neutrogena Micromist, $13, amazon.com; DuWop Clear Revolution Shimmering Self-Tanner, $30, cosmetics-deals.com; TanTowels, $22, amazon.com

Nothing says summer like a good healthy tan, but nothing ages you faster than sun exposure. Thank goodness for self-tanner! You may as well call me the head honcho of faux-tans as I’ve literally tried about every product out there. I’ve walked out of many Mystic Tanning Salons resembling an Oompa Loompa and have stained at least six sets of pristine white sheets with self-tanning lotion. But, after much trial and error, I’ve finally found these four self-tanners that don’t leave so much as a smudge on my pillowcase. To top it all off, I don’t walk around all day smelling like self-tanner, which is easily one of the worst scents out there.

No matter the season, I strive for wavy beach hair on a daily basis. There’s really nothing better than that tousled, just-out-of-the-water look. Since I live in New York City, dunking my head in the ocean is a little out of the question, but thankfully there’s a number of products that help me get my messy hair without putting on a bathing suit.

I currently have three methods for achieving beachy hair, all of which have a slightly different result.

1. When I want my hair to look as if I’ve literally just gotten off my surfboard in Hawaii, I use Bumble & Bumble’s Surf Spray. It gives my locks a ton of texture while simultaneously holding everything in place. I spray it all over my hair (wet or dry) and massage it into my scalp. I used this everyday for a while and it really dried out my hair, so I recommend either using it less often or making sure you frequently hydrate your hair with deep conditioning treatments.

2. I use Frederic Fekkai’s Marine Summer Hair + Beach Waves when I want more defined waves. I spray it all over my hair right after I get out of the shower then scrunch my hair up towards my scalp and let it air dry. The result is clean, defined waves that look natural and feel extra soft.

3. When I feel like giving my hair a break from products, I spray my hair with a spray bottle filled with homemade salt water and let it air dry. While it doesn’t hold a curl as much as the other products, it still gives my hair that textured, tousled look.

I used to be the type of girl who liked to keep her nails clean and simple, sticking to basic reds and pinks when getting a mani or pedi. That all changed a few years ago when Chanel introduced its infamous Jade green nail polish; I suddenly found myself wanting candy-colored fingers day in and day out. Adios ballerina pink and hello canary yellow!

Last summer I was all about the neons: neon pink, green, orange, yellow — you name it and it was probably on my fingers and toes at some point. This summer, however, I can’t get enough of tropical blues that remind me of placid turquoise Caribbean waters and white sandy beaches. From electric blues to sea foam green hues, I plan on keeping my fingers looking like they’ve been painted by the ocean all summer long.

Since I can never seem to bring myself to pick just one color, I’ve narrowed down my eight favorite shades (see above), all by different brands, in the hopes of making your lives a bit easier.

New York and Los Angeles might have more to offer than Chicago in many aspects but what’s the one thing we have that they don’t? The Ruby Room. A ‘spiritual spa’ located in the heart of Wicker Park, it is known for making you beautiful and cleansing the soul. Since opening in 2002, this spa has become well known for such things as their Crystal Bar where you can meet with a technician to pick crystals that resonate with your own unique energy field ($60 for 30 minutes). There’s also the Essence Bar where you can choose from a large collection of essences that self adjust to help repair and restore your energy and then you also learn about how to incorporate them into your daily routine ($60 for 30 minutes). For individuals looking for a more mainstream experience, they also offer the usual: facials, massages, waxing, etc. Regardless of what service you settle on, this place is definitely worth the money for an engaging experience you will not find anywhere else.

You’d think that I would have packing my purse down pat after years and years of doing it everyday. But somehow I am always scouring for essentials. While I still think there is room for improvement, these are the lifesavers I always carry with me.

Sonia Kashuk Eye Smudge in Blackest- This basic black eyeliner stays on great, especially on those hot summer days at the beach!

Mini Michael Kors Roll on Perfume- This is my signature scent so I have to have it with me at all times. I am obsessed.

NARS Body Glow- This is the ‘It’ product for summer. Not only does it smell amazing, but I can slather it on anywhere for that golden goddess look.

Bobby pins- The perfect quick fix for any hair uh-oh.

Oscar Blandi Hairspray- This floral smelling spray does a great job of keeping hair flexible and not succumbing to humidity.

Stila Custom Color Blush- I love the pink glow this blush gives your skin. The most amazing thing about it is that it works with your skin’s own pH levels to create the perfect color on your cheeks.
