As a girl, I dreamed of becoming a ballerina. Sadly, my two left feet and total lack of hand-eye coordination made me quit my beginner dance lessons in a fit of fifth grader’s frustration. But this afternoon, I got to live vicariously through the pro dancers from NYC’s Gallim Dance in their rehearsal space in Soho.
Between choreographing moves for their upcoming show Sit, Kneel, Stand (debuting at the Joyce Theater in June), the dancers took time out to share their most-beloved beauty products and their best on-stage makeup tricks (which happily translate to real life). Learn more after the jump!
We’re less than a week away from New Year’s Eve, which means you better start stocking up on noisemakers and kitschy party hats now. Whether you’re spending the night at home with your besties or going to a glitzy bash, you’ll want to look even more gorgeous than usual. (After all, if New Year’s Eve is good for anything, it’s photo ops!) This week, we’re helping you out with five days of party essentials. Our focus today: getting glowy with the help of highlighter.
As much as I love my mighty powerful lip colors and intense smoky liners, there is one thing I would give them all up for: flawless supermodel skin. Since I wasn’t born with that je ne sais quois glow, I routinely fake it with highlighter.

When you’re getting ready for a night out or a glam party, you can’t skip a few key finishing touches. Among them: applying color to your cheeks, which will instantly make you look healthier (read: prettier). You’ll want to pick your product according to the look you’re going for. Here are four of our favorites, each suited for a different style.
I have a knack for coming to Los Angeles at the exact right time. My last trip fell over Carmageddon, the most traffic-free weekend the city has seen in decades; this time, I left New York just before Irene’s windy onslaught. I also missed my flight back, thanks to massive flight cancellations. Since I planned to stay the weekend, not all week, I’m working with a limited wardrobe and beauty supplies. Happily, that’s just right for laid-back Cali style. I keep seeing girls walking around looking pulled together, but fresh and natural at the same time — and I think I’ve figured out their secret:
1. A tan. Yes, it must be said, a tan makes you look thinner and healthier. Fake it with Cargo’s Bronzer, which is completely matte and easy to blend.
2. Perfect skin. I haven’t seen a visible foundation line yet, which means these girls were either born with flawless skin or they have a kick-butt tinted moisturizer. I’m guessing the latter. stila, an L.A.-based line, has a sheer tinted moisturizer that does the trick and then some.
3. Peachy blush. Choose a bright blush in a warm peachy-pink shade. It’ll give your cheeks definition and make you look glowy at the same time. I love RMS’s Lip2Cheek in Smile, which I apply with a brush for a streak-free, creamy look.
4. Neutral lips. Yes, I see the occasional statement lip, but for the most part, L.A. seems to be more gloss than matte lipstick. (Can’t blame them — it’s easier to apply in the car!) Luckily, I have my pretty Jouer Moisturizing Lip Gloss with me.
5. Jean shorts and an Equipment silk blouse. This easy combo is practically an L.A. uniform. Equipment’s to-die-for blouses look effortless and give off the right air of breezy polish. Cutoffs keeps things cool and casual.
Another stranded-in-paradise essential? Nuxe’s genius multi-use oil. It keeps arms and legs hydrated, and tames flyaways, too.
A style force to be reckoned with, Sara Zucker is well known for providing daily outfit inspiration and scoping out incredible finds via her Tumblr, Farpitzs (which is the Yiddish word for ‘all dressed up,’ just in case you were curious). As if being one of the most popular fashion voices in the blogosphere wasn’t time consuming enough, the well-heeled trendsetter also happens to be Glamour Magazine’s community manager. Lucky for us, she was able to make some time in her busy schedule to guest blog for us this week. Check back daily as Zucker shares everything from her favorite fall trends to what’s in her cosmetics bag.

For a beauty look that is simple to recreate and on-trend for the season, I looked toward the Balmain spring 2011 runway. The brand is known for its bad-ass leather pieces, but the models were painted in tame, ultra-wearable cosmetic colors. Hair was kept sleek and smooth in order to highlight the main event: the eyes. To create something similar to the Balmain catwalkers, use a lash conditioner to encourage eyelash growth, brush lashes with a few coats of voluminous black mascara, and add a shimmery, champagne-colored shadow.

A little while ago while doing research for a story about easy ways to make your lifestyle more environmentally friendly, we came across a site we love: Practically Green (@practicallygrn). Dedicated to helping people take smart healthy actions in their daily lives, the site is a plethora of information—including lots about skin-care and cosmetics (follow them on Facebook, too). We asked the ladies of Practically Green, Rebecca, Sarah, and Kristen, to divulge their fave products and over the next few days, we’ll hear from each of them about what their individual recommendations are for lips, face, eyes, and body.
RMS Beauty Cream Eyeshadow, Acure Line Eraser Balm, Jane Iredale Longest Lash Thickening & Lengthening Mascara, Erbaviva SPF 15, Mad Hippie Eye Cream
Rebecca: When choosing mascara, it’s best to avoid nasty stuff like parabens, phthalates, petrolatum, diazolidinyl urea, which have been linked to cancer, reproductive toxicity, and allergies. That’s why I reach for eco-friendly mascaras like Jane Iredale’s Longest Lash Thickening and Lengthening Mascara. It maximizes lashes using safe ingredients like cellulose fibers and sea minerals.
Sarah: I like to use baby sunscreen near my eyes (but not too close!) and am enjoying Erbaviva’s SPF 15 this season. ’m also devoted to Acure’s Line Eraser Balm and RMS Beauty’s shimmery eyeshadows, which are just right for the summer because they are moist and stay on even in all this heat.
Kristen: I’ve started using Mad Hippie Eye Cream with 17 actives, which I know is meant to reduce wrinkles (and I don’t have them yet because I am still in college), but it feels so soothing and light on my skin. Given that my life is full of a lot of late nights and test cramming, I’ve got to have a way to get rid of puffy bags under my eyes, and this product definitely helps. Plus, I’m sure my skin will thank me later.

Moss’ honeymoon, Keratase Creme Oleo, RMS Living Luminizer, Dr.Bronner’s Magic Peppermint Soap, Kiehl’s Super Fluid UV Defense 50+, Jouer Luminizing Moisture Tint
After wedding this past weekend, Kate Moss and hubby Jamie Hince set sail on a several month-long honeymoon on the Mediterranean Sea. The newlyweds are aboard a private yacht (of course) called Lionheart, which is 206 feet long and owned by Topshop CEO Philip Green. Not too shabby…and judging by the images I’ve seen thus far of the supermodel sunning herself, Kate looks as glamorous as ever. She must be hiding a pretty hefty stash of beauty products, and though it’s a little tougher for us mere mortals to take an extended vacation, we definitely know what we would bring with us if we had the chance to cruise around for a couple months. Personally, I would need Jouer’s Luminizing Moisture Tint. To fool everyone into thinking I have a tan, recently I’ve been using the shade Glow, and it’s cut back my morning makeup routine tremendously. I asked a few Birchboxers what their one must-have would be, and here’s what they said:
Mollie, director of content: When I was a kid, my family used to take overnight sailing trips. The only product we had on the boat was Dr. Bronner’s Magic Peppermint Soap. It was tingly and refreshing and served as hand wash, face wash, and shampoo. To this day, I associate that product with salt water, yellow life jackets, and scratchy canvas boat cushions.
Elizabeth, SVP of brand merchandising and marketing: You have to look as pretty as you did walking down the aisle, especially in the morning! I would not go anywhere without my Kerastase Creme Oleo Relax Slim. It smooths thick, dry, rebellious hair.
Meredith, editor & content strategy manager: I’m not much of a boat person because A) open water really freaks me out and B) I like to stay out of the sun, which is near impossible while sailing or yachting. To keep my fair skin from getting burned, I would bring several bottles of Kiehl’s Super Fluid UV Defense 50+, my new favorite sunblock. It’s an ultra-light formula so it’s effortless to apply and it dries completely matte, so no shiny residue.
Liz, VP of engineering: On a holiday like that? Sunscreen! The zinc (invisible) based type.
Rachel, brand marketing & merchandising manager: I absolutely could not live without RMS Living Luminizer. It gives your skin the ultimate glow!

Left to right: RMS Beauty Cream Eye Shadow in Solar, $28, birchbox.com; RMS Beauty Lip2Cheek in Smile, $36, birchbox.com; RMS Beauty Living Luminizer, $38, birchbox.com
We keep a well-edited wish list of dream brands that we are dying to carry in our Birchbox Shop, and every time we successful add one to our site, it feels SO good. Case in point, on Monday we started selling RMS Beauty, a pure and organic color cosmetic line created by celebrated makeup artist Rose-Marie Swift. The brand is centered around the idea of hydrating and illuminating your skin, with the added bonus of color. We’ve picked up three incredible products from the company and we can’t decided which one we like best. The cream eye shadows come in the most enticing shades, Solar, Magnetic, and Lunar and the Luminizer highlights our cheeks bones perfectly with just the swipe of a finger. Since we’re total suckers for a good two-in-one product, we’re smitten with the Lip2Cheek hues. Perhaps our favorite part of the whole line though is how each product comes in a delightful mini glass pot—making all the products highly portable and thus even more addictive.

As Rachel pointed earlier this week, it’s summer wedding season. Accordingly, I’m currently headed to the North Fork to celebrate the nuptials of a dear friend. I’m pretty excited to sneak out of the city and spend some time in the land of wineries and fried oysters — and to do some terrible dancing, of course. Here’s what I’m bringing along.
Wei Tibetan Crysanthemum Correcting Eye Treatment Pads: Like cucumber slices only waaay better. These pre-soaked pads take down any puffiness and darkness—a must since I’m chronically sleep-deprived. I’m planning on doing them tomorrow night before the event.
Zoya Polish in Dove: We sampled this perfect grey polish in our April Birchbox and I’ve been wearing it ever since (I get on color kicks…). Since I’m planning on wearing a dark charcoal dress and chartreuse necklace, I need semi-subdued nails.
Jouer Moisturizing Lip Gloss in Wind: We don’t sell this color, but we’re definitely going to have to add it to our Shop soon. It’s a step up from neutral and gives lips a pretty fullness.
Stila Stay All Day Liquid Liner: Beauty genius Jenn Falik told me that this was the best liquid liner ever—and she was right. It’s completely goof-proof and will stay on all night.
Becca Nail Polish in Tangerine Dream: OK, fingernails have to be subdued but toes can be bright, right? We got this brand-new shade in the office yesterday and I adore it—it’s like the color of apricot sherbert.
RMS Beauty Cream Eyeshadow in Magnetic: We’re adding RMS to the Birchbox Shop and I’m incredibly excited. All the products are made with organic, pure ingredients, and look amazing. This richly pigmented shadow is a gorgeous slate-meets-violet shade. (Check the Birchbox Shop next week to get your RMS fix!)
Stila Prime Pot in Caramel: Weddings call for long-lasting makeup. This eyeshadow primer is my new favorite weapon against fading and creasing. Dab it on with fingers and watch your shadow stay on all night.
Nu Bra: The salesgirl at Barney’s promised me that this is the ultimate strapless bra. Despite its space age look, I’m going to give it a shot. I’ll report back.
