This week we have a special treat in store for all of our blog readers: a guest vlogger! Our latest video star is none other than YouTube guru Rachel Martino. A Brooklyn resident, she excels at hair, makeup, all things personal style, and, oh, French, too. (Fun fact: she has a separate YouTube channel en Francais!) Check back each day this week for more from this multitalented fashion and beauty maven.
Earlier this month, we revealed the results of Beauty Pulse Survey, including the trend that respondents were most excited about (beachy waves, duh). But what about the meh factor? Respondents said that they are totally over ombre highlights and nail art—the trends tied, each with 22 percent of the vote. That said, the Birchbox community is generally trend-loving, with 36 percent of respondents still psyched about all the trends we listed. If you’re ready for something new, we have suggestions for you.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved iconic red lips. But loving red lips is different from wearing (and rocking) red lips. Here’s how I learned to pull them off.
1988. My dad gives me an acting kit with waxy stage makeup pencils in blue, black, red, and white. I request red lips and a beauty mark. A three-year-old with red lips? Alas, the lips are wearing me and not the other way around.
Our latest guest blogger, Ally of Allyson in Wonderland, is an oil and gas professional with a serious eye for great finds. We can’t get enough of her gorgeously crafted blog, where she shares her love for style, travel, and photography. This week she’s giving us a peek into her personal beauty treasure chest—and we’re taking notes.
A few months ago, Tangerine Tango was declared 2012 Pantone Color of the Year. It’s a bright reddish-orange that looks amazing when mixed with other colors, especially coral. I’ve been trying to brighten up my wardrobe and this poptastic shade was just what I needed.
Last night, at the What to Expect When You’re Expecting premiere, J.Lo rocked a gorgeous set of deep mauve lips with a bronze smoky eye. Not so long ago we predicted that the normally wintry deep red hue would be a hot new trend for spring and summer, so we were excited to see one of our favorite pop culture icons showing off this extra bold look.
Today is International Women’s Day! To bring more attention to the holiday, new movement #RockTheLips is trying to get one million women to wear red lipstick today. The Birchbox staff is definitely doing its part to spread the word, just take a look at all the ladies of our office sporting crimson puckers—and the men are even showcasing kiss marks on their cheeks!
Emmy Rossum is always one to watch on the red carpet—the girl’s got style!—but her ensemble for the second season premiere of Shameless last week was especially stellar. Channeling the roaring ’20s with her fingerwaves and flashy flapper-esque Ralph Lauren dress, she looked head-to-toe perfect. My favorite touch? Her intense burgundy lip color. Wine-hued pouts were a huge runway trend for this winter season, but many starlets opt for the obvious cherry shade when hitting the red carpet. Rossum’s deviation from the norm was eye-catching and her deep berry hue lends a modern touch to an otherwise very retro look.
We’re less than a week away from New Year’s Eve, which means you better start stocking up on noisemakers and kitschy party hats now. Whether you’re spending the night at home with your besties or going to a glitzy bash, you’ll want to look even more gorgeous than usual. (After all, if New Year’s Eve is good for anything, it’s photo ops!) This week, we’re helping you out with five days of party essentials. Today’s topic: getting a gorgeous flush.
Whenever I am getting ready for an event or party, I am inevitably running late. Since I refuse to attend any sort of fete without styled hair (ie: blown dry) and a cute outfit (why does this part always take so long?), it is my makeup that usually pays the price. Enter my biggest time-saver: Red lipstick.
Hot on the heels of two-tone manicures, dual-hued lips are emerging as an offbeat holiday trend. The makeup mavens over at Refinery 29 suggest using a lip brush to apply a classic burgundy red on your bottom lip, then filling in your top lip with a complementary shade of dark pink. But personally, I’m not so sure I have the courage to rock this bold look. What do you think: are two-toned lips wearable?
Before you head to all those holiday parties, pick up an on-trend lip color from the Birchbox Shop.
