Raw and honest, Rachel Wilkerson’s blog, The Life & Lessons of Rachel Wilkerson, is captivating and heartfelt. Covering the trials and tribulations of her personal life, her blog gives advice on everything from the serious (like moving house, which is so stressful) to the mundane (fun nail art!) and everything in between. We appreciate anyone that keeps it real the way she does, so we’re excited to have her as this week’s guest blogger.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved iconic red lips. But loving red lips is different from wearing (and rocking) red lips. Here’s how I learned to pull them off.

1988. My dad gives me an acting kit with waxy stage makeup pencils in blue, black, red, and white. I request red lips and a beauty mark. A three-year-old with red lips? Alas, the lips are wearing me and not the other way around.

Most women use the gym to sweat. They head there to amp up heart rates, burn calories, or train for a half marathon, and don’t think twice about how they look while doing so. And that’s totally fine; I use the gym that way most of the time. But some days, I use it to socialize and, well, flirt. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve become more aware of age-appropriate beauty. I feel older, more mature, and more capable, and I want my looks to represent that. But as someone who loves trying the latest beauty trends, I’ve had to work a bit harder to be sure I look age-appropriate. Here’s how I make sure I don’t look like I’m trying too hard to be younger or older.

Follow trends you love and ones that seem like a natural fit for your current look. The key is to wear the look and not let the look wear you. Don’t follow every trend that comes along; just follow ones that make you say, “That’s so my style!” Not everyone can rock the kind of lavender hair normally reserved for little old ladies, but when Kelly Osbourne did it, we all took one look and realized it was clearly a natural progression of her look and style.

If there is a gene that makes someone love beauty products, I’m convinced it skips a generation. So many beauty junkies I know have mothers who could care less about lipstick or powder, but their grandmothers adore the stuff. That’s exactly the dynamic of my family. My mom is a tomboy and my grandma is totally glamorous, which means I relied on my grandma to teach me about makeup when I was growing up. Here are some of her best beauty lessons.

How many of us were told when we first started wearing makeup that the secret is to make it look like you aren’t wearing any makeup at all? Trouble is, that’s much harder to do than it sounds. But after years of trying (and not always being so subtle), I’ve learned how to pull off the natural look in a way that appears healthy, bright-eyed, and pulled-together. Here are some of my tips:
