Coming to a departures gate near you—New York’s famed Black and White Cookies from Ess-a-Bagel.
Paris, j’arrive! Editorial Director Mollie, Social Media Senior Manager Rachel, and I are jetting to the City of Light to pow-wow with our lovely colleagues from Birchbox France, UK, and Spain. I’m leaving plenty of room in my suitcase for Parisian discoveries to tote back to New York, but I couldn’t leave without these key staples:
For June, our theme is wanderlust and we could think of no better person to wax poetic on foreign adventures than Kate Thorman, a professional travel writer. Kate’s impressive credentials include being an editor for Mr. & Mrs. Smith as well as the host/producer of the web-based travel and food program The Innocents Abroad. (In fact, she’s actually the cofounder of the show’s production company Abbott & West.) If you think you had the itch to explore before, we can guarantee that you’ll be ready to pull the trigger and book your next plane ticket after reading her travel-savvy posts this week.
So you’re going to Paris. Que je suis jalouse! But where are you going to stay?
As a former resident, I get that question more than any other from friends planning trips: what neighborhood to stay in? The fact is that your quartier, as the locals say, will determine your experience of the city—Paris is not a ‘one size fits all’ place.
Throwback Thursday or #tbt has become an internet mainstay, so of couse we’re jumping on the bandwagon. This week’s brave soul: our Community Manager, Rachel.
You wouldn’t know from the looks of my put together 29-year-old self, but there was a time when I was not the stylish lady you see before you. Let me take you back to the spring of 2007: the Spice Girls had a reunion tour, Heidi and Spencer made a music video, Shrek the Third was released, and I was living in Paris as a graduate student at the American University of Paris.
Artist Fabrice Hyber’s sculpture made entirely from lipstick. (Photo: WWD)
There’s lipstick in a tube, and then there’s lipstick in the form of a 330-pound cubical sculpture on view at the Palais de Tokyo museum in Paris. Entitled “1M3 de beauté,” which means “one cubic meter of beauty,” it’s the work of French artist Fabrice Hyber and part of his show Matières Premières (a.k.a. Raw Materials), which runs through January 7th. The shade on view is none other than Yves Saint Laurent’s Rouge Pur Couture number one. “It needed to be a red that is very vivid, very present,” Hyber told WWD.
Our math skills are a bit rusty, but we’re wondering: how many individual tubes of lipstick would equal the weight of this mammoth cube? And perhaps more importantly, if he bought all those lipsticks, how much did that cost?
No need to stockpile lipsticks—all you need are a few go-to shades like our favorites from Beauty is Life.

If you’re lucky enough to be heading to Paris this weekend for the Haute Couture shows (running July 1-5), the place to stay is the Mandarin Oriental, Paris. The very chic and very Parisian hotel is located neatly on rue Saint-Honoré between Jardin des Tuileries and Place Vendôme—perfectly situated for hopping between shows and people watching at the Carrousel du Louvre. This morning, I had a chance to meet with the hotel’s lovely Communications Director, Emilie Pichon, and she filled me in on the latest at the year-old property. The first French outpost of the Mandarin Oriental group, it has luxe rooms and a swanky restaurant, but the highlight might be the incredible spa.
Operations associate, Loren, has a thing for nails- and we can’t blame her. We love reading about new finishes and fun techniques, so we thought we’d give her a weekly slot on our blog to wax poetic about all things manicure (and pedicure!) related. Check back every Thursday for Nailing It, Birchbox’s dedicated polish series.
Spring is almost here and there are tons of exciting polishes coming out. I’ve been doing lots of experimenting and this week, I’m particularly obsessed with the new Me Amour collection from Mattese Elite.
