As much as we love nail art, we’re better at admiring designs than coming up with them ourselves. That’s why we’ve enlisted Anna Norman, the smarty pants behind Glitter, She Wrote, to be a regular contributor. Every Monday, she’ll be sharing her latest lacquer inspiration—you won’t be satisfied with plain ol’ polish again.

It’s officially March, and even though it’s still quite chilly out, I’m itching to switch up my nail polish wardrobe. Goodbye dark, vampy shades, and hello to the colors of spring. While I do enjoy a pastel here and there, spring lacquer doesn’t always mean Easter egg-inspired hues. Here are my five picks to carry you through the season.
Poppy Red (thumb): This bright orange-hued red is one of the most universally flattering colors—it was even selected as one of the Pantone Fashion Color Report shades for the season. It’s livelier than the blue-hued reds of winter, but still looks sophisticated and classic. I’m wearing the brand new My Paprika Is Hotter Than Yours by OPI.
Every year, Pantone, the International color authority, releases their Color of the Year. The color for 2013 is Emerald—a truly fetching hue that looks good on just about everyone. To show you how to incorporate this eye-catching shade into your daily routine, our editor Meredith reveals her best tips for beauty and accessories. PLUS, since we want you to be on the forefront of the trend, we’re offering a special promo code, which can be found by watching the video. Use the code at checkout when you spend $25 in the Birchbox Shop and include at least one item from our emerald category in your cart. Hurry though, this offer is only good through March 10th.

When we’re facing an approaching blizzard, our thoughts turn to hot soup, cozy blankets…and hunkering down with friends for a mani party. The upside of being trapped inside all day? There’s little risk of smudging your fresh polish.
As Nemo hits the Northeast, the hue that will brighten my spirits and make me think of tropical climes is Color Club’s recently released Wild Cactus. The rich emerald shade is totally on trend, matching Pantone’s Color of the Year (stay tuned for our video all about emerald), and looks great with my paler-then-pale skin. Tough enough to weather the storm, the rock-solid formula stays chip-free for days and is free of harsh ingredients like formaldehyde, toluene, and DBP.

The hot trends last summer were pretty in-your-face (remember all of the screaming neons and chunky glitters we wore so often?). This season, I’m loving more subdued shades in rich jewel tones, plus some added sparkle, of course. Here are five shades to take you through the winter.

After a week of dreary weather, we’ve finally gotten a sunny reprieve here in New York. The much-needed dose of vitamin D has us thinking about bright pops of color—especially Marilyn Monroe-inspired red. The classic look-at-me rouge is just the right hue for weekend lips, freshly painted walls, and flowy fall outfits.
This season, we’re totally crushing on stila’s stay all day liquid lipstick in Tesoro—it’s gorgeously pigmented and really doesn’t budge.

As the seasons change and you begin reaching for sweaters and boots instead of sundresses and flip flops, it’s prime time to revamp your nail polish wardrobe, too. I’ve loved the brights and neons from the summer, but I’m so ready for fall. Here are my five color picks to keep your nails in top form this autumn:
Holographic: I’m crazy about the subtle holographic polishes popping up in fall collections this year. Holos are more subdued than big, chunky glitters, but still pack an eye-catching, sparkly punch. I’m wearing Butter London Dodgy Barnett, a pale grey with a barely-there holographic sheen.
Meredith Jessica of Pigment and Palettes is a superstar when it comes to creating extra-dramatic eye makeup. But be warned: her embellished styles aren’t for the faint of heart. Regardless of whether you love these bold suggestions or you’d rather just stick with neutral shadows, there’s no denying the artistry behind these looks. This week, Meredith’s inspired by the colors that Pantone predicts will be trendiest for Fall—and uses them to create five incredibly cool ideas.

Fall is all about being fashion forward, and this look is definitely for people who like to turn heads and start trends. Tangerine Tango, a bright bold orange, is the color of 2012. The best way to make it pop is to pair it with a contrasting color like Olympian blue. Together they create a killer combo that’s sure to catch everyone’s attention, especially if you’re blessed with blue eyes. Bright Olympian blue complements the natural tones of azure eyes, while the bold orange of Tangerine Tango contrasts them—creating a dynamic duo that’s perfect for adding instant impact.

News Flash! Pink isn’t just for spring anymore. Fall fashions are sure to be infused with two of Pantone’s prettiest pinks: the bold bright pink of flambé plus the softer, more neutral shade, Rose Smoke. Even if you’re not the world’s biggest girly-girl, you can still work these colors into your look as a lipstick or blush. But if you’re feeling adventurous, pink can be the perfect eye color—you just need to know how to wear it.
