Birchbox staffers are an eclectic bunch with a variety of fascinating backgrounds. Case in point? Operations associate Nathaniel Yordan. Prior to being scooped up by the Birchbox team, this globetrotter whipped lackluster complexions into shape as a professional makeup artist for industry heavyweights like Bobbi Brown and Laura Mercier. We took advantage of his seemingly bottomless store of beauty knowledge to solve the ultimate busy gal’s dilemma: seamlessly transitioning makeup from day to night. Equipped with Coastal Scents’s Metal Mania Palette Set, he showed us how to get a mini 5 o’clock makeover. Click through to learn how he transformed fellow Ops Team associate Molly!
Day: For an everyday office look, Nathaniel suggests sticking to neutral shades that can easily be jazzed up for an evening out. Mimicking her go-to morning routine, Molly dabbed on ORIGINS GinZing Energy-Boosting Moisturizer then applied a thin layer of Marcelle Golden Glow BB Cream with her finger tips to even out her complexion. Next, Nathaniel stepped in and applied Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Eye Base in light to medium all over Molly’s lids to up her shadow’s staying power. Thanks to her naturally wide-awake appearance, he skipped concealer and advised that when looking for the perfect color-correcting eye base, “avoid formulas with the word ‘creamy’ in the title—these tend to slip and crease easily.” Using a fluffy eyeshadow brush, he swept a soft terra cotta hue with barely-there sparkle onto the crease. The muted red is neutral enough for a buttoned up office environment, while the subtle gold shimmer makes it easy to transition the hue to evening. Next, he tightlined Mollie’s upper lash line using stila’s Smudge Pot in black and an angled eyeliner brush. (For a quick tutorial on tightlining check out this handy guide.) For a natural-looking flush, he blended NARS well-loved Orgasm Blush onto the high points of her cheekbones. He completed the breezy look with a swipe of theBalm® cosmetics “what’s your type” mascara and a dusting of loose translucent powder.
Night: To take any look from day to night Nathaniel says, “Dark pencil liner is your best friend.” To up the ante, he added a layer of INIKA Eyeliner in graphite along Molly’s upper lash line. This instantly brightened Molly’s brown eyes. The key, Yordan says, is adding more color. “Don’t be afraid if it’s too much, because you always blend to soften it.” He then used an angled eyeliner brush to sweep a deep purple-burgundy along Molly’s upper and lower lash line to create a winged effect. He added another coat of mascara, patted some bronzer on cheeks, and shooed her off to hit the town.

This weekend, I’m heading out of the sticky city and up to the fresh air of Andover, NH. I’m lucky enough to have a friend with a lakefront house, and even luckier that she doesn’t say no when I ask if she’d like some company. Happily, there isn’t much to do except kayak, cook with the bounty of the local farmer’s market, and make our annual pilgrimage to the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen’s Fair (which is as awesome as it sounds). Product-wise, it’s all about restoring and repairing—here’s what I’m bringing along.
Figuring out how to order your skincare lineup can feel like trying to solve a rubik’s cube—not impossible but clearly a challenge. You’ve got a bathroom shelf filled with products, but which comes first?
The good news is you don’t to have to be a dermatologist to learn how to get the most out of your beauty routine. Just use this nifty diagram and the tips below to layer your products like a pro.
Any Michiganders out there? This week our senior manager of social media, Rachel, is leaving for her wedding in Charlevoix, Michigan! (Note: longtime Birchbox fans have probably been anticipating this day since October when her engagement bling started popping up all over our Instagram feed.)
Before Rachel left Manhattan for her two week stint in the Midwest we made her spill the beans about which products made the cut for her big trip. Here’s what she’s taking with her, and why:
In just a few short days, I’ll be heading to Manzanillo in the Mexican Riviera for a much-needed vacation with my boyfriend and his family. I plan on staying on the beach from sunrise to sunset, eating incredible food, drinking delicious wine, spending quality time with people I love, and unplugging—save for a few too-pretty-not-to-Instagram moments. Here’s what I’m packing for a week of carefree beach vacationing:
Today, I’m hopping on a plane and heading to Ecuador’s hermoso capital city Quito for a dear friend’s wedding. In addition to comfy walking shoes (I plan to do a lot of solo exploring) and my trusty passport, here are some of the travel must-haves I’ll be stashing in my carry-on:
1. Oscar de la Renta Something Blue
According to our friends at The Knot, it’s a faux pas to attend a wedding empty handed. With that in mind, I’m packing this timeless scent to hand over to the bride-to-be on the big day. Inspired by the iconic designer’s silk and lace wedding gowns, the refined blend has sparkling notes of mandarin, linden blossom, and bourbon vanilla.
Whether you’re looking for celebrity gossip, the best product for frizzy hair, or advice on what to wear to your cousin’s wedding, the gals at Lovelyish have got you covered. This week, a handful of the site’s staffers—Katie Kubiak, Annie Strole, and Allison Wheeler—are bringing their expertise to our blog in a series of five beauty and style how-tos.
As I get older, I grow more and more disappointed by the term beauty sleep. Sure, my dark circles aren’t as bad when I’m getting eight hours every night, but something about that phrase seems to imply that you’ll awaken with lustrous locks and glowing skin.
As with everything in life, when you want to get something done, you have to do it yourself. So if you really want to get real beauty sleep, you’ll have to take matters into your own hands!
Girl Around Town co-founders, Leigh Evans and Mary Cunningham, created an online community for women to talk about the latest in fashion, beauty, food, and more. The site boasts jet-setting writers who are based in Los Angeles, Houston and New York, all of whom have the insider deets on the hottest things to do and see all over the globe.
On any given day we put a lot of stuff on our faces: serum, moisturizer, sunscreen, highlighter, foundation, powder—and that’s not even the eyes and lips. Even the freshest faces end up with loads of environmental gunk on them by the end of the day, and I’m sure I’m not the only one who realized that a washed face doesn’t always mean a clean face.
That’s why pre-cleansers have become a mandatory staple in my skincare regimen.
Health and beauty: a winning combo, no? At this morning’s Self Magazine 2012 Healthy Beauty Awards, the theme was products that make you look and feel amazing.
The event, held at the Museum of Modern Art, revealed 89 winners across the categories of face, makeup, nails, sun, hair, and body—from Top Acne Spot Solution (hello, Yes to Tomatoes Clear Skin Spot Stick) to Best Deep Conditioner (woot Ojon Super Sleek Smoothing Conditioner). The products were chosen by a panel of Self readers who tested them in their own homes and submitted their honest feedback. I recognize plenty of favorites on the list, but there are also ones I’m excited to try!
Beyond celebrating the phenomenal products, Self’s Editor-in-Chief, Lucy Danzinger, also set the tone of the event by bringing attention to social media. She told the audience of editors, industry execs, and brand bigwigs that companies shouldn’t try to strong-arm their message—they should just ensure that people are talking about their products and their brands. As a Twitter and Instagram addict, I loved hearing her give a digital call to action.
