Operations associate, Loren, has a thing for nails- and we can’t blame her. We love reading about new finishes and fun techniques, so we thought we’d give her a weekly slot on our blog to wax poetic about all things manicure (and pedicure!) related. Check back every Thursday for Nailing It, Birchbox’s dedicated polish series.
After watching all the gorgeous bright and blush-tone gowns flow down the red carpet at the Golden Globes on Sunday, I got inspired for spring colors. Based on how awards season has started and the spring 2012 shows, I’ve picked the four shades I think will be blossoming on everyone’s nails come warmer weather. Take a look and let me know the polishes you’ll be springing for in comments!

Canary Yellow: Yellow is going to be B-I-G for spring. Designers like Derek Lam, Rodarte, BCBG (above), and Diane Furstenberg all incorporated this sunny shade in a significant way into their collections. To spread the love to your digits, try China Glaze’s Shunshine Pop from their new Electropop Collection.
Our creative team is pretty, well, creative and they come across beautiful imagery all the time. Why not share the inspiration? Keep an eye out each Friday for their Mood Board, a collection of images they’re loving.

We absolutely love Halloween and couldn’t resist dedicating this week’s post to the color orange. Of course, we had to throw in some sequins and glitter — they are essential for making costumes and decoration sparkle. We hope everyone has a safe and happy Halloween!

It’s time to ditch the warm-weather neon brights and truly transition to fall. Get a little help switching between seasons by picking up Essie’s Very Structured, my polish pick for this month. This beautiful burnt orange lacquer is the perfect muted hue of pumpkin and it definitely compliments the beautiful changes in the foliage that we are seeing already (well, that everyone outside of NYC is seeing, anyway). Labeled the “evolution of camel from last fall,” this color is a great way to be festive in October without going overboard. It’s also a more subtle way to rock the orange makeup trend!

If you’re not ready to give up summer colors, here’s a vivacious sherbet shade you’ll love.

I started wearing makeup back in ninth grade. This was during my Hot Topic goth phase, so I loaded pale foundation, black eyeliner, and blood red lipstick onto my face with the enthusiasm of a kindergartener with a brand new set of Crayolas. Nowadays, I’ve toned down the Dracula mask, but my basic makeup has stayed the same: winged liner and cherry lips. I guess you could say I’m stuck in a beauty rut. With this in mind, I’ve realized that everyone (including myself) can benefit from re-examining their routine. Whether you’re content with your signature look or you’re ready to shake things up, small changes can make a big difference.

As a recent grad from Syracuse (where our mascot is Otto the Orange), I’m pretty partial to the color. And by pretty partial, I obviously mean borderline obsessed. After four years of being surrounded by this color all day, every day, I learned something important: even though at first it appears like it might be hard to pull off, it is in fact quite wearable. Just as it so happens, it’s been all over the streets of NYC this summer. Whether it’s a nail polish, an accessory, or a dress, it turns out that the world outside my old campus is beginning to realize that it’s the perfect warm-weather color. I almost feel like I’m back in college. Almost.
