When it comes to my Hollywood hair crushes, Gwyneth Paltrow ranks right up there. In fact, in 1999, I dyed my blonde hair super-dark brown after seeing a picture of the actress with brunette strands for her role in Bounce. (Side note: While it obviously looked amazing on Gwynnie, it was a terrible choice for me and I have never ventured brown since.) After more than a decade of following her hair transformations, I am always awed by her gorgeous choices, but she’s never shocked me with her style—until now.

We fell hard for Natalie Alcala last fall, when the LA-based writer and blogger spent a week guest blogging for us. In fact, we loved her posts so much that we asked her to be a contributing editor. In addition to blogging for us once a week, she’ll also be writing for the Birchbox Magazine and keeping us up to speed on all things fashion, beauty, and fun.
Last weekend, I had the pleasure of attending The Makeup Show L.A., also known as a beauty aficionado’s dream. While I had tons of fun fawning over the latest offerings from brands like Anastasia and stila, there was one booth in particular that caught my eye: The New Black.
We’re guilty of sticking with the same hair cut for years — if it’s not broke, why fix it? — but that can be a little boring. But not everyone has our issue. Paulina, one of our amazing operations associates, is always eyeing new cuts and styles. She’ll be sharing her tress inspiration and tips every other week in Hairistocracy. Her latest hair obsession: ombre!

About two weeks ago, I got the itch to seriously change up my style. Since I’m growing out my hair and that limits what I can do cut-wise, it dawned on me that it was finally time to change my color. I have never, I repeat never, dyed my hair before so this was a big step for me.
