Eating

Every weekend, Brooklyn’s Williamsburg and DUMBO waterfronts play host to Smorgasburg (90 Kent Ave at North 7th Street and 30 Water Street), an edible market featuring foods from across the five boroughs and New York State, from lobster rolls and local oysters to classic smoked meats and Mexican huaraches. Sweet tooth? Run, don’t walk, to the legendary Levain Bakery on the Upper West Side (167 West 74th Street) for the best cookies you’ll ever eat. And for delicious cocktails and superlative snacks (the kabocha squash toast and roasted carrot and avocado salad are among our faves), snag a bar stool at ABC Kitchen (35 East 18th Street), close to Union Square.

An Insider’s Guide to New York City: Where to Eat, Drink, and Shop

image

Our event coordinator Jamie has a knack for finding the best of what New York has to offer. After working as PR for Alexander Wang, Jamie became something of an expert on the fashion world’s “of-the-moment” mentality, and that insight has made her Birchbox’s resident cool-hunter. Besides the few coveted classic New York establishments, there’s always a new bar, restaurant or beauty brand to discover in the city—and Jamie always seems to know where to go. This week she’s leading us away from the holiday crowds and sharing her five favorite local picks for where to eat, drink, and shop.

How You Can Help the Sandy Recovery

As New York, New Jersey, and much of the Eastern Seaboard struggles to deal with the destruction, power outages, flooding, and gas shortages left in Sandy’s wake, many of us are looking for ways to help. With the help of Twitter and the interwebs, we’ve pulled together a variety of options—there’s something for everyone, whether you’re in New York or Nebraska, and whether you’re looking to donate time, cash, or perhaps even airline miles.

Eataly Now Has a Beauty Section!

Mario Batali’s New York City Italian piazza-style food spot, Eataly, has added a beauty department to the seemingly endless selection of gourmet wines, cheeses, pastas, and desserts. As devoted Eataly foodie fans (we stop by their pizza section and their upstairs open-air bar, Birreria, pretty darn frequently) we were totally stoked to find out that they’re adding a bevy of new beauty brands to their merchandise selection. We couldn’t resist, and had to stop by to get a better look. Click through to see pictures of the new section!

L’OCCITANE en Provence — en Manhattan

We love when beauty brands open boutiques, especially when the brand is as chic as L’OCCITANE en Provence. The French company has moved into New York’s Meatpacking District, which has getting better and better ever since the Highline and Standard Hotel moved in. The new location is opening its doors at 48 9th Avenue (near 14th St) with a ribbon-cutting ceremony tomorrow evening.

The boutique will be a new design for the brand. Managing Director of L’OCCITANE USA (and ribbon cutter), Leela Petrakis says, “In keeping with the feel of the neighborhood, we’re unveiling a totally new design concept that marries the gritty origins of the surroundings with the Provençal heritage of the brand. The store is a major element of our focus on New York City this year, bringing Provençal beauty to one of the chicest cities in the world.”

If you’re in the city tomorrow, stop by to see the brand-new store! The first 100 customers to make a purchase will receive a special Meatpacking gift set.

Bond No.9 Joins The High Line

The up-and-here New York City Meatpacking District is taking a major step in the right direction. On Saturday, Bond No.9 perfumer will open another satellite shop at 863 Washington Street—opposite of the southern end of the recently expanded High Line— bringing all sorts of new (and sweeter) scents to the area.

Bond No.9 celebrates the diversity of New York with fragrances that represent a specific location within downtown, midtown, or uptown. With one spritz you’re good to go all day, and the chic packaging makes the entire experience worthwhile. I’m a sucker for sparkle, so The Scent of Peace Swarovski Purple Velvet Superstar is definitely my dream aroma.

The shop is a work of art in itself—housed inside a red brick building twice the size of the other branches, with a perfume salon lit by green chandelier up front, and a library-tearoom-bar awaiting you in the back. This store is clearly creating the ultimate aromatic experience; you can browse fragrance collection books while enjoying a cup of tea. At the shop you’ll be able to find all 43 of their eaux de parfum, candles, soaps, body potions, pocket luxuries, and their legendary custom-blending service. See you on Saturday?
