We’re a tiny bit in love with Shyema Azam’s blog, Beauty and the Feast. The freelance editor and writer—who’s worked for publications like Marie Claire, Allure and Harper’s Bazaar—writes about her everyday discoveries in the food and beauty world, often accompanying her posts with envy-inducing photos. Stay tuned all week for Shyema’s insider advice! Today, she tells us the product that helps her de-stress and stay zen.
Sundays are invariably my ‘me’ days, which means I turn my apartment into a mini spa—the most economical spa that there is. The robe comes out, the faux nail bar is erected in one corner of my room, my shower becomes “the sauna,” and I always, always have a face mask handy. Lately, I’ve gotten into paper face masks, like the ones from myfaceworks, for a number of reasons.
Even if you’re not a mom, Cool Mom Picks is an amazing resource. Written by super savvy and super busy women who happen to be mothers, they take all of the legwork out of finding fabulous things. Basically, it’s well-curated and budget-conscious, so what’s not to love? With Mother’s Day right around the corner, we asked their publisher and CEO, Kristen Chase, to tell us about some of her can’t-live-without time-saving items.
With the weather finally turning (finally!), we’re all crawling out of our veritable holes to enjoy the gorgeous spring weather, which means it’s the perfect time freshen up your wardrobe and yourself. If you don’t have time for a spa visit just yet, we’ve put together five of our favorite products that will get you spring ready right in the comfort of your own home.
Weleda Skin Food: These amazing natural products live up to their name; they smell good enough to eat, and they work wonders on dry skin.
my face works Sheet Mask: Give yourself a quick facial right in your own bathroom with my face works. We’re particularly enamored with the “i need to wake up” sheet, which might just be the motto for all moms everywhere.
NARS Orgasm Illuminator: If you don’t have time to put your full face on, just pop on some mascara and add a little NARS Illuminator to the apples of your cheeks. You’ll look fresh and flush. Hence the name.
Stila Lip Glaze: Think lip balm and gloss all in one easy smart applicator. It even stays on through one cup of coffee. Or glass of wine, depending on the kind of day it’s been.
Zoya Nail Polish: You won’t have to worry about the kids wrecking your nails. Zoya nail polish stays on longer than many of the other popular brands. And even better, no formaldehyde.
Find all of these products and more in our Birchbox Shop.
Our co-founders Katia and Hayley are jaunting off to South by Southwest in Austin tomorrow. While the music festival is a blast, the duo is actually headed to Interactive, a series of events and presentations that focus on emerging technology. (Translation: FourSquare! Tumblr! FoodSpotting!) We’re always about what people take on trips, so we asked them to let us peek at the essentials they’re packing. Hopefully their jaunt won’t be all work and no play—you can’t go to SXSW and not have any fun!
What Katia’s bringing:
My Face Works i need to detox, i need to replenish, and i need damage control sheet masks: These are a must to help me refresh after flights and get ready for go go go time.
Oscar Blandi Olio di Jasmin Hair Serum: Perfect for adding some polish to my air-dried ‘do.
Jouer Luminizing Moisture Tint: A fast way to get flawless skin in just one simple step.
Korres Lip Butter in Wild Rose: I love all things butter, so just add a tint and I’m really happy! This is my new never-leave-home-without-it product.
Pomega5 Daily Revitalizing Concentrate: Thirsty skin + travel-friendly ampules = A-M-A-Z-I-N-G.
What Hayley’s Bringing:
Apothia If Roll-on Perfume Oil: The rollerball makes it so easy to travel with!
Deborah Lippman Stripper To Go: I’ll definitely be packing these handy to-go packets of nail polish remover in case my army green mani doesn’t make it through the weekend.
Lipstick Queen Pop Art Lip Gloss #13: I discovered this brand back in May 2010 during our Birchbox beta test and it’s still one of my faves. It’s half-gloss half-lipstick, which allows for quick application.
Sue Devitt Eye Intensifier Pencil in Bangalore: My new low maintenance short-on-time alternative to eye shadow.
Birchbox temporary tattoos!: Planning on branding some techie guys at the bars. To snag your own Birchbox tat, use the code TATS on any full-size order within our Shop.
Cosmetic case: My mom gave me this one — it’s from Thailand.

We teamed up with myfaceworks on a fabulously fun photo contest where entrants were asked to submit pictures of themselves (and friends) wearing a myfaceworks sheet mask. We encouraged funny, silly photos, but we had NO idea what awesomeness was headed our way! The above image blew the competition out of the water, so a big congrats is due to Melody Freeman and Kimberly Yates for taking the most creative, adorable, and downright hilarious photo we’ve seen in a while. Hope you ladies enjoy the three boxes of myfaceworks masks headed your way—no doubt you’ll put them to good use.
Never tried a myfaceworks sheet mask? The starter kit lets you test out several types.
I’m obsessed with myfaceworks Sheet Masks even though they make me look like an escapee from a horror. We’re teaming up with myfaceworks for a special Facebook contest: simply post a picture of yourself in your mask (it won’t show up on your feed, in case you were wondering), and you’ll be entered to win three boxes of masks — a $165 value. Here’s my pic - sexy, huh?

Every day from now until December 31st, we’ll be posting a daily gift suggestion. It’s like an advent calendar, minus the ugly graphics.
Sybarite on a Budget: myfaceworks Starter Kit
There’s nothing she loves more than whiling away a day at the spa, soaking up the cucumber misted air. Since weekly facials are out of the question, give her the next best thing: myfaceworks Starter Kit, a selection of six one-time-use face masks. Each of the masks targets a different skin woe, from dullness to dryness, and heals using a potent serum. Not only are they fun to use, but they give the appearance of a treatment without the price tag.
