Los Angeles native and USC student Sophie Elkus is a self-described fashion addict. Her blog Angel Food Style is where her joy for putting together the perfect outfit comes to life. And you would think that her fabulous dress sense must come second to her studies, but Sophie proves that having a full schedule doesn’t mean sacrificing style. This week, she’s sharing her favorite beauty and fashion tips for women on-the-go with us on our blog.
I can’t remember the last time I used a JanSport backpack to carry my textbooks and laptop. Why take it back to middle school when you can upgrade to a chic tote or structured satchel? There are so many stylish collegiate accessories on the market that it’s hard to narrow down my search to these few favorites.
A MODEL’S NYFW DIARY: MICHAEL KORS
When it comes to high fashion, model Alana Zimmer is one of the biggest names in the industry. Some of her latest accomplishments: starring in the current Akris and Givenchy Beauty ad campaigns and walking in the Armani Privé and Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture shows last month in Paris. Currently the Canadian beauty is in the Big Apple for New York Fashion Week and doing her second backstage photo diary for us. Check back each day for more of her supercool pics from a model’s perspective!

While the usual low-slung pony is great for day-to-day, holiday party season provides the ideal opportunity to experiment with a different style. That’s why we’ve teamed up with one of our favorite sites, Beauty High. Each week, they’ll be sending over a few runway shots to inspire you to try something new for your upcoming festive fetes.
We saw plenty of creative hair accessories on the fall/winter runways, and there’s no better time to experiment with some fun hair bling than at a holiday party. Below is some inspiration from a variety of shows—certainly enough to get you through this season!

The bright bobby pins used at Cacharel are the perfect, easy accessory to add some color and flair to any hairstyle. Whether you’re pulling your hair back into a ponytail or simply leaving it loose, using a few bright pins like these twisted bobby one from Wet Seal ($6.50) or these eye-catching ones from Jane Tran ($12) to clip your hair behind your ear will help give your style a refined edge.
After sorting through all of our favorite beauty looks from the Spring 2013 collections, we narrowed down the many styles to the top five that you have to know. Herewith, our cheat sheet on the trends-to-try for early next year. From perfected matte complexions to aggressively-placed parts, you won’t want to miss any of these fun new styles.

1. Blue Eyeshadow
Blue shadows once only existed in our (awkward) memories of the ’90s or in the makeup kits of the very bold. But no longer. This season we caught sight of gorgeous sky blue, sapphire and marine hues swept onto eyelids at shows like Kate Spade, Monique Lhullier, Jason Wu, Tibi, and Patrick Ervell.
This New York Fashion Week, we have a new blog contributor—and she’s as pro as they come. Model Alana Zimmer (whose resume includes regular Vogue editorials, walking in couture shows like Armani and Jean Paul Gaultier, and starring in Nicole Miller’s fall ad campaign) is taking exclusive backstage pics for us at all the shows she’s in this season. Check back each day to see NYFW from a model’s point of view!

Spoiler alert: Some of our members will be receiving exclusive lace-printed Twistbands in their September Birchboxes!
As much as we love summer, fall fashion is so much more fun. Load of layers, cozy sweaters, kicky boots—there are too many options. One trend we’re particularly excited about this season is lace. We love the girly texture so much that we teamed up with Twistband to create a custom collection of lace-printed hair ties. We’ll be sampling these ultra-feminine hair ties to many of our members this month—get excited!
The exclusive set of six hair ties is the perfect way to add the ultra-feminine fabric to your wardrobe. When we created the collection we took color inspiration from the Fall 2012 catwalks—shows like Chanel, Diane von Furstenberg, and Lanvin. Not only are we suffering from a serious case of wanderlust, but we’ve also got a touch of the winter blues. The only cure? Vacay! And whenever we’re planning a trip, the first place we consult is Jetsetter. You can’t beat their combination of gorgeous destinations and killer deals. Lately, we’ve been drooling over their Jetsetter Homes collection, with dreamy villas and private rentals. Each day this week, we’ll be showcasing one of their best mid-winter escape properties and making suggestions for what to pack. From exotic beaches to powdery slopes, there’s something for everyone. By Friday, you’ll be ready to hop on a plane. First up: Buenos Aires!
Buenos Aires has an energy all its own. The city buzzes with over 15 million people, and has some of South America’s best shopping, eating, and partying. But the real reason to go right now: it’s their summer! It’s currently a 88 degrees there—doesn’t that just sound delightful?
TheGloss is one daily must-reads (right up there with the NY Times). We love the site’s witty approach to style and its smart and irreverent voice. We like the writing so much, in fact, that we’ll be featuring one of their posts each week here on the Birchbox blog.
Here at TheGloss, we like to send earth-shattering eyerolls in the direction of famous (and famously svelte) women who’d expect you to believe that they eat whatever they want and never work out and roll out of bed with loose, beachy waves. Most (not all) of them are lying and we find it more than a little insulting to our intelligence.
…However, we also find it kind of astounding–if not a little distressing–when a model steps forward and tells us what it actually takes: Victoria’s Secret Angel Adriana Lima recently shared the details of her grueling pre-show routine. Her fitness makes sense–intense cardio like jumping rope and boxing, with some weight lifting–but it’s her diet that gets a bit jaw-dropping…
