Whether you’re looking for celebrity gossip, the best product for frizzy hair, or advice on what to wear to your cousin’s wedding, the gals at Lovelyish have got you covered. This week, a handful of the site’s staffers—Katie Kubiak, Annie Strole, and Allison Wheeler—are bringing their expertise to our blog in a series of five beauty and style how-tos.
Winter (and all the lovely skin conditions that come with it) is still here, yet spring is right around the corner. Frankly, it’s a bit of a confusing time when it comes to shopping. Are you supposed to buy a sundresses or coats? Sandals or boots?
Not only do our wardrobes change with the seasons, but our skin does too. Sure, you could wait ‘til spring comes to invest in a new seasonally appropriate beauty routine, but honestly you need a new moisturizer—like right now.
Nothing gets us giddy like a good wedding. Katelyn Koepke Lewis, one of our lovely freelance writers, got hitched this October and we couldn’t resist asking her to share her bridal wisdom. The former PR maven and J-school grad recently went back to her editorial roots, working as a feature writer and editor for Be U Weddings, a Chicago-based blogazine. This week, Katelyn’s sharing her newlywed advice, from bridal beauty tricks that you can use post-wedding to how to pick hostess gifts for your new in-laws.
Take a moment to ponder your makeup must-haves. You might immediately list off a pore-perfecting foundation or that spot-on lipstick shade. What tends to get lost in the shuffle though? The behind-the-scenes preppers that—let’s face it—don’t seem as glamorous (or as fun to dish about) as the chic blush compact you just slid into your purse.
For me, these secret weapon tools: ensure that my eye makeup doesn’t slide off, combat inevitable t-zone shine, breathe more life into my locks, snatch stray hairs, and eradicate zits. Without them, I wouldn’t be able to focus on the more delightful beauty battles, like what color mani I should sport this week. Here are the hidden heroes of my beauty regimen:
Based in Washington D.C., Ayren Jackson-Cannady is so savvy that we wished she lived closer to NYC so that we could swap products with her. This beauty writer knows what’s up (she’s written for Fitness, Glamour, and Gloss Daily) and we’re excited to have her sharing her know-how and multi-culti beauty expertise as a contributing editor.
Am I the only one who gets all depressed on Sunday nights? After an amazing weekend full of naps on the sofa, sangria slushies, backyard barbecues, and everything in between, Sunday evening rolls around and it’s all over. But it doesn’t have to turn into a pity party.
Ever heard of the Sunday Night Beauty Ritual (SNBR)? Basically, you take the better part of Sunday evening to pamper yourself with a major at-home beauty treatment. I haven’t tried one yet, but all my beauty writer and editor buddies are on board with the practice. I have to say, their skin, hair, nails, (and sense of humor toward the work week) are seriously benefiting. Let’s get inspired together by these real life SNBRs:
“Sunday is my hair washing day. I wash and deep condition with a hair mask. Plus, I usually do any waxing and body scrubs that I don’t otherwise have time for during the week.”

We love surfing Heather Walczuk’s blog, Beauty Unbiased, for her smart and on-point makeup reviews, pretty photos and her upbeat insight. The resident New Yorker always has great tips for making the most out of your products, which is why we’re excited that this week she’s sharing tips about her fave summer finds, makeup-artists must-haves, and how to get a gorgeous top knot.
It’s become inevitable lately that when I mention my blog, I’m asked about my favorite beauty products. Of course, then I’ll suddenly blank on the name of my new favorite mascara that I’ve just tweeted about. When social anxiety kicks in, I drop-kick it back to my new acquaintance by asking for their personal favorite beauty picks. See how I did that? Reverse beauty psychology. I steal their favorite beauty ideas and they leave feeling good about having shared their knowledge with me. It’s the main reason I love Birchbox—new beauty finds every month with minimal work on my part! That’s what I call a win-win.
Here are four of my favorite summer beauty discoveries that I’ve borrowed from other people:
1. Benefit’s Benetint: While Benetint has been around forever, I had an aversion to trying stains for a long time. But since I kept hearing friends rave on and on about it, I decided to give it a shot. It leaves a rosy glow that lasts all day but feels so lightweight.
This week’s guest blogger, Vida Lee, hits close to home for us—literally! She’s a beauty guru based in our hometown: New York City. Aside from being a product addict, she’s also a medical school student (whoa!) who makes time on the side for her pretty blog, P.S. It’s Vida. Over the next few days, the smarty savant will be sharing her greatest tips and tricks for staying prepped and primed for summer.
As a beauty blogger, I take my products almost everywhere I go, even to the beach for some minor primping. Here are a few things I like to use to keep it simple when going on beach trips:
Not to brag or anything, but we have some pretty fashionable friends. And they’re blogging for us! Every other week, Of a Kind founders Claire Mazur and Erica Cerulo will be introducing us to one of their brilliant designers, along with his or her beauty essentials. This week’s star: designer Matt Singer and his practical-but-stylish dopp kit. I can think of quite a few guys who could use this little guy - not to mention my dad! Read on for Matt’s grooming picks.
Designer Matt Singer Packs his On-the-Road Grooming Essentials
Matt Singer has amazing taste. Walk into any Jack Spade store, and you’ll see his influence: He was the brand’s creative director before launching his own collection of shirts, bags, and accessories that you didn’t know you needed until you saw them. He designed an awesome toiletry kit just for Of a Kind that we think makes the perfect grads-and-dads gift—and an even better one when stocked with some of Matt’s favorite grooming products. “I am a big fan of Ursa Major’s Stellar Shave Cream, Marvis Classic Mint Toothpaste, Mario Badescu Body Sun Block, and the travel-sized bottles of peppermint shampoo and conditioner from Malin & Goetz,” he says. If you haven’t heard of some of these brands, trust us: They’re worth tracking down.
