Notable Quotables is a weekly series featuring a great quote. Whether it’s the founder of a beloved beauty brand, an eccentric makeup artist making headlines, or even a super-stylish celebrity, our favorite tastemakers always have something worth sharing. Today’s quote is from Nicki Minaj, who spoke with Elle about her wigs, eccentric makeup, favorite products and more.

My eyes, because they’re the one thing I need my makeup artist to do. I don’t have the patience, my hands shake, and I mess everything up. So my makeup artist has to do my brows and lids and lashes. Everyone knows I’m a lash girl by now. When I don’t have my lashes, I feel naked.
—Nicki Minaj to Elle regarding the most high maintenance part of her beauty routine.
Even if you’re not a makeup nut like Nicki, a colorful liner from stila will give you a fresh new look.
In the fashion world, there’s outfit envy. In the beauty world, there’s makeup envy — and we are seriously envious when it comes to Annamarie Tendler. A genius makeup artist, Tendler covers a wide range of topics on her am. blog, but her The Daily Face posts, which chronicle her day-to-day makeup looks, are our favorite. (FYI: She did an amazing series in October called The Spooky Scary Daily Face, which was epic.) Each day she inspires with a gorgeous new look, and for one whole week, she’s sharing her makeup expertise with lucky, lucky us.

The Daily Face is a project on my personal blog that I’ve been doing for almost a full year now. I do my own makeup, photograph it, and then explain how I achieved the look with a breakdown of what I used. Here’s my smokey eye, a classic look every makeup wearer should master! For more Daily Faces visit my blog.

I might be a makeup artist, but I don’t wear a lot of makeup on a regular basis. Here is a look into my makeup bag; the 13 products I wear most days or take with me when I go away. With these items I’m covered for any situation, casual or fancy.
Notable Quotables is a weekly series featuring a great quote. Whether it’s the founder of a beloved beauty brand, an eccentric makeup artist making headlines, or even a super-stylish celebrity, our favorite tastemakers always have something worth sharing. This week our quote is from a Refinery29 article about makeup artists’ favorite beauty products. One of our favorites, Sonia Kashuk, was featured and expressed her love for Oribe hair care products.

Since I have such curly hair, I can forgo shampoo for a few days to keep my hair healthy and shiny, but I need my Oribe Hair Care Signature Moisture Masque and Supershine Moisturizing Cream. The condition of my hair has completely transformed since using these products.
— Sonia Kashuk to Refinery29
We couldn’t agree more with Sonia — our hair always feels better after using Oribe. Find all our favorite products in the Birchbox Shop!

In case you couldn’t tell by our posts earlier, today was video shoot day at Birchbox! That means arriving extra early to our studio, going through scripts, setting up the perfect camera angles, and best of all…having makeup artist Nam Vo work her magic! We thought we’d take the opportunity to show you Nam’s desk o’ makeup. This is a lot for even us to take in!

1. Notice the amazing set of Jouer cream eyeshadows near the center of the image? Color us insanely jealous - Nam actually has the entire Jouer makeup collection to use on her editorial shoots.
2. Another Birchbox favorite, the Laura Mercier Transluscent Powder mattifies our shiny foreheads so we look as polished at the end of the day as we did at 8AM. Quite a feat for a single product.
3. Smashbox High Definition Foundation smooths our models’ skin and gets them ready for filming in HD. No visible pores here!

Holy makeup brushes, Batman!

Our favorite makeup artist, the inimitable Nam Vo, stopped by this afternoon. Not only did she come bearing red velvet twinkies from Lulu Cake (unreal), but she also gave us a few impromptu makeup tips. To Meredith: “Remember, your eyebrows are sisters, not twins. Let them each have their own shape.” She also rummaged through all the various products on my desk and picked out her favorites.
YSL Rouge Volupte Provocative Pink: I love this. It’s a hot tamale.
Buxom Stay-There Eyeshadow in Golden Retriever: This is so pigmented. The gilded bronze is perfect for hazel and green eyes.
Ling Skincare Ginseng Therapy Moisture Mask: I go to Carol at Ling’s for my facials. She does all the models and she’s amaaaazing.
By Terry Gloss Delectation in Mandarina: Full pigment - this is beautiful. I’d wear this with a wash of champagne shadow on my eyelid - very springy, summer.
Pangea Balancing Oil: When I was younger I would always look for things that were oil-free. Now that I’m a little bit older I’m all about oils. So good for your skin!
Dr. Gross All-in-One Cleanser with Toner: My roommate actually works for Dr. Gross so I get to try everything — so lucky. This is my favorite face wash because it’s gentle and makes my skin feel moisturized after.

Watch Nam do her thing in our latest video, How to: Matte Lips.

Do the dew. The dewy face, that is. Nam, one of our favorite makeup artists, says pressed powder is a surefire way to look dated. She usually skips powder altogether, or uses an ultrafine translucent powder to set makeup. But if you’re not a teenage supermodel, you may need a little help to get your complexion glowing. And that’s where Rodin Oil comes in. Veteran fashion stylist Linda Rodin tinkered for a year to come up with the perfect blend of essential oils that would nourish her skin and give it a beautiful sheen. Blended from 11 essential oils, including jasmine, sweet almond, and neroli, Rodin smells heavenly, sinks in easily, and makes skin look healthy, not greasy. Since launching, her creation has become an insider favorite; makeup artists use it to give models a luminous glow and celebs buy it buy the liter to use as a highlighter and calming oil. Nam suggests using it anywhere you’d use highlighter - on your cheekbones, browbones - or mixing it with tinted moisturizer. Despite the price (approximately $140 for the face oil) Rodin has trouble keeping it in stock and has even rolled out special body and hair formulations.

Oh how we love Nam Vo. She breezed into our office today, all bouncy hair and glowing skin, for a combination catch-up and technical help session (check out her new blog!). In return, she showed us her new obsessions: Kre-at False Lashes, which are incredibly high quality. She tested them out on me (lucky, I know!) and I was amazed at how natural they look. The difference, she says, is that the lashes are individual clusters that you carefully insert in between your lashes using tweezers. Applying false lashes this way looks more subtle than simply plopping on a band of false fringe because a real lashline is uneven anyway. “It’s like a wig versus extensions,” she says. Nam made it look incredibly easy, simply dipping each clump into a tiny bit of glue and then placing them on my lashline — in reality, it’s a little trickier. I’ll report back once I try it myself!
More of Nam’s picks and tips soon!
