I’m a lipstick girl through and through. I’ve become an expert at eating a full meal while maintaining a perfect red lip and can spot MAC’s Russian Red a mile away. But despite my obsession, wearing lipstick all day can be exhausting. Sometimes I just want a quick swipe of color that I don’t have to meticulously reapply in the mirror every few hours. Lip gloss seems like the obvious answer, but my memories of sticky and overly shiny glosses from middle school didn’t encourage me to pick up a tube any time soon.
However, I was recently urged to give LipFusion Infatuation Lip Fattener a try and I have to confess that I’ve had this lip gloss thing all wrong. This game changer is nothing like its early 2000s predecessors and definitely deserves a spot next to my favorite lipsticks in my beauty lineup. If you’re not a fan of lipgloss now, you might have a change of heart because some of you will be receiving this in your May Birchbox!
BURGUNDY HUES TAKE CENTERSTAGE AT ZAC POSEN
If designer Zac Posen’s Fall 2013 collection is any indicator of beauty trends to come, burgundy is about to have a major moment. Backstage models were sporting glossy, port-wine manis and deep plum lips. Essie’s lead manicurist Michelle Saunders told us that the lacquer hue was chosen to match several evening dresses in the designer’s collection.
To create the look, Saunders and her crew applied two coats of essie’s Carry On. The crimson shade looked smashing, and its very apt name appropriately described the post-Nemo mood backstage.
MAC’s key makeup artist Kabuki contrasted ethereal white eye shadow with a wow-factor pout to build on the collection’s rich color story, outlining lips with the Pencil NC15 in Vino Lip Liner to keep lipstick smudge- and crease-free. Next, he applied MAC’s Lip Mix in Burgundy with a slim makeup brush.
Elaborating on the color, Kabuki explained, “I had Tilda Swinton in the back of my mind.” The finished look definitely evoked the regal actress’s elegance and boldness.

On dreary days like this, the quickest way to perk up is with a generous swipe of bright lips. Our Parisian counterparts share our philosophy: look at JolieBox’s Mathilde and Malvina wearing deep berry lips. The shade? Lancôme’s L’absolu Rouge 361.
Mathilde says, “We’re falling for this season’s biggest trend: Bordeaux lips!”
We’ve whittled down this season’s trends to ten that you have to try. See them all here.
One of our favorite enduring trends: bright pink lips. Whether you’re rocking an easy-going, natural vibe or a look with a touch of dramatic flair, this ultra-feminine color is nothing but flattering. We’re always on the hunt for the perfect shade, and, in fact, we teamed up with Jouer to create a bright magenta Birchbox pink lip gloss. Sheer and subtle with one coat, keep applying for additional pigment payoff or layer it over an opaque lipstick for a highly saturated effect. Not sure how to rock a bright pink pucker properly? Take a cue from pros like Blake Lively, Jessica Biel, and Rihanna.
This week’s Of a Kind designers, the duo behind Yestadt Millinery, are doubly amazing. First, they have fantastic taste in products (NARS Funny Face? Just one of our all-time faves). Second, they create brilliant headgear that is easy to wear, like their Rainbow Bright clips. Pick up a set of four neon clips at Of a Kind now and read on for the twosome’s makeup musts.
The Yestadt Millinery Girls Punch Up Their Lips
Molly Yestadt and Jane Pincus know a lot about how to best accentuate the face. The duo — best buds since grade-school days — have a New York-based classy-shassy hat line with fans like Marc Jacobs and Thom Browne, and the middle of the night is about the only time that these two aren’t sporting their own designs. They each have a makeup product they reach for daily, too. “I use the red Benetint stain just about everyday. It’s the best thing that ever happened to blush,” explains Molly. As for Jane, well, her new signature lip color was actually a gift from her cohort. “My favorite product of the moment is the hot pink matte lipstick from NARS: Funny Face. I can literally roll out of bed and apply this product, and my entire look is more put-together and playful,” she explains. “The hot pink lip has become my go-to since the summer. It is a complimentary tone with my red hair and pops underneath any hat I may be wearing that day.”

What happens when you wear nail polish on your lips? Besides looking pretty, obviously?
After Daphne Guinness “experimented” by applying her new MAC nail polish to her lips, celebrity make-up artist Rachel Wood noted, ‘As far as nail polish goes…I’m not sold on using it for the lips. First of all most polishes contain fomaldehyde, not a substance I would suggest to ingest.’

Hot on the heels of two-tone manicures, dual-hued lips are emerging as an offbeat holiday trend. The makeup mavens over at Refinery 29 suggest using a lip brush to apply a classic burgundy red on your bottom lip, then filling in your top lip with a complementary shade of dark pink. But personally, I’m not so sure I have the courage to rock this bold look. What do you think: are two-toned lips wearable?
