In just a few short days, I’ll be heading to Manzanillo in the Mexican Riviera for a much-needed vacation with my boyfriend and his family. I plan on staying on the beach from sunrise to sunset, eating incredible food, drinking delicious wine, spending quality time with people I love, and unplugging—save for a few too-pretty-not-to-Instagram moments. Here’s what I’m packing for a week of carefree beach vacationing:
Based in Washington D.C., Ayren Jackson-Cannady is so savvy that we wished she lived closer to NYC so that we could swap products with her. This Turkey Day, rock a fun lip color a la Kelly Rowland. (Photo: Hello Beautiful)
There are so many things I love about Thanksgiving—the turkey and gravy, the southern style mac and cheese, the honey glazed carrots, the pecan pie. The one thing I’m not a fan of is how my family likes to pull out the Nikon right after I’ve joined the clean plate club. Camera lights start flashing at precisely the moment my belly is bulging over my waistline, there’s stuffing remnants between my teeth, and my lipstick is non-existent from all that lip-licking. It’s not a pretty picture, so this year I asked New York City makeup artist Lauren Cosenza to share her best tips for applying feast-proof lipstick. Read on to learn how to keep your lip color intact—even through seconds.
Models from London Fashion Week sport bold under-eye liner. (Photo: NY Mag)
After years of devotion to the cat eye look and fierce upper eyelids, we were a little shocked when we saw these shots from the spring 2013 shows at London Fashion Week. Liner has migrated under the eyes, and models sported bold slashes of pigment in hues ranging from bright white to midnight black. We love experimentation as much as the next girl, but we wondered: is this look wearable off the catwalk? We asked veteran makeup artist Laura Geller to translate the runway trend to real life.
Gel eyeliners have been gaining popularity over the last few years, and it’s easy to see why: they offer more control than liquid liners and denser pigments than pencils. At last night’s Strut: The Fashionable Mom show, which featured influential real life moms parading down the catwalk, lead makeup artist Johnny Ottarino used Laura Geller’s Inkwell Waterproof Gel Liner in Black to get “well-defined eyes” that looked dramatic without straying into harsh territory. The trick, as we learned, is to use an angled brush to apply the gel liner, starting from the outer corners of the eyes and creating a horizontal V shape (you want to leave the inner corners of your eyes bare). Next, soften and diffuse the line by layering on an earth-toned powder such as Laura Geller’s Baked Cake Eyeliner in Creme Brulee. This gives the gel liner extra staying power.
Are you a fan of gel liners?
Before you apply liner, make sure to prep your lids with an eye primer like Laura Geller’s Eye Spackle.
A Birchbox subscriber gets a mini-makeover.
Last night, NYC-area Birchbox subscribers came out to visit Laura Geller’s posh Upper East Side Makeup Studio in honor of the brand’s 10th anniversary. Between snacking on pink cupcakes and sipping on champagne, they got the chance to get mini-makeovers courtesy of Laura Geller’s pro team of makeup artists. Best of all, Queen Bee Laura Geller herself was there to mix and mingle with her fans. Missed out on the event? No worries—you can still get pro blush application tips from Laura Geller by clicking through to watch our How To: Blush and Brighten video!
Lately, our entire office has been buzzing about One Love Organics® Skin Savior Waterless Beauty Balm—an incredible multi-purpose salve included in this month’s Birchbox. When we found out the product could be mixed with mineral powder foundation to create creamy customized colors, we got even more excited!
As product-addicted, exploration enthusiasts we had to put this unique formula to the test. Using some spare makeup lying around the office (and as you can imagine, there are quite a few “spares” on each Birchbox employee’s desk) we started experimenting.

(After all, if New Year’s Eve is good for anything, it’s photo ops!) This week, we’re helping you out with five days of party essentials. Today’s topic: getting a gorgeous flush.
When you’re getting ready for a night out or a glam party, you can’t skip a few key finishing touches. Among them: applying color to your cheeks, which will instantly make you look healthier (read: prettier). You’ll want to pick your product according to the look you’re going for. Here are four of our favorites, each suited for a different style.
Katie Holmes stunned the crowd at the recent Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol premiere in New York. We love her glowing skin, sleek brows, and effortless updo, but it was her eyes that reminded us of why she’ll always be the prettier half of TomKat (despite stiff competition from her well-groomed hubbie). The secret to Katie’s alluring gaze? Navy liner on her top and bottom lash lines along with a faint wash of shimmery dark shadow. Her eye makeup complements her monochrome polka dot dress in a way that’s not too matchy-matchy, and we think it’s a great twist on the classic smokey look.
