I definitely need this waterproof, reusable snack bag by BonTon gifts.
Mea culpa. This week’s post is late because
the dog ate it I was traveling earlier this week and have been digging out of my inbox ever since. But my recent trip (Los Angeles for a whopping 36 hours) reminded me of the importance of having snacks on hand at all times. I was (duh) stuck in traffic on (duh) the 405 when I got incredibly, all-encompassingly hangry. I had nothing to eat on, not even a dusty lozenge, and I was nowhere near a delicious fish taco or green smoothie.
While I was sitting in my rental car, I had plenty of time to fantasize about the healthy snacks I should have packed. Here are wholesome plane- and car-friendly foods for all types of cravings.
Overbooked flights. Train delays. Stinky seatmates. No one said holiday travel was easy, but it would be nice if it didn’t crush your body as well as your spirit. We asked Melisse Gelula, wellness expert and co-founder of Well+Good NYC, for advice on how to stay happy and healthy during the busiest travel season. Turns out it’s easier than you think.
Eat at home beforehand
“You’re surrounded by high-carb, prepackaged foods at airports and train stations,” says Gelula. “So I eat a really healthy meal at home beforehand, like a kale salad with avocado and almonds.” A light, well-balanced meal will curb the impulse to reach for that in-flight Chex Mix freebie. To satisfy a mid-journey snack attack, reach for smart-but-tasty option like Lärabar’s ϋber bar.
A little more than a year ago, Hurricane Irene wreaked havoc on the eastern seaboard, and all of New York City shut down in preparation for it. Now the Mid-Atlantic and North Eastern parts of the US have been put on high alert for Hurricane Sandy. Don’t be caught unawares! In preparation for torrential downpours and hours-long blackouts, here’s what we’re stocking up on to get through the Frankenstorm.
“Papa Chen would be mortified to know that the only candles in my apartment are of the Diptyque and Atelier variety. While I love Illume’s mini candles (so cute!), I’ll probably go the practical route and grab some extra-large candles and backup flashlight batteries at the hardware store.” —Mollie, Editorial Director
"I’m going to grab bottled water, snack bars (I’m a fan of LÄRABARs), and haul out the camping lanterns from the cabinet under my sink. Then stock up on some yummy food to cook and be thankful that I have a gas stove.” —Benedicta, Director of Editorial Operations

I consider myself a healthy snack aficionado. I didn’t used to be this discerning—a few years ago, I’d just throw any old granola bar in my bag, even if it was loaded with high fructose corn syrup and soy protein isolates (wha?). Nowadays, I’m much pickier. I go for products that are minimally processed and have all natural, real ingredients.
Needless to say, when it came to picking our January lifestyle extra, I was very interested in
