Phew, we made it through another week of sweltering heat (here in New York, at least) and we’re ready for the weekend! What are your big plans? We’ll be catching up on some reading, spending time with friends, and relaxing in general. Here are a few of our favorite stories from the week. Let us know in the comments how you’re spending your weekend!
We’ve always had a soft spot for Amy Poehler but a new video featuring her giving a young viewer advice about wearing makeup just made her one of our favorite people ever. Watch the sweet video above. [Huffington Post]
Busy Philipps snapped a twitter picture of her fruit-tastic mani earlier this week. Color us intrigued! [Twitter]
WWD revealed more information about Lady Gaga’s first fragrance, Fame, due out in late August. The fragrance will be sold in three different sizes and will also include a black soap, black shower gel, and a black body lotion to be rolled out gradually. [WWD]
Mila Kunis looks adorably retro in her new campaign for Miss Dior. Carine Roitfeld styled the ad campaign, which will be out in the August issue of Elle Hong Kong. [Fashionista]
This month we teamed up with Glamour to pick products that are inspired by the five senses. Find all our July products in the Birchbox Shop.
If you’ve been keep up with our Morning Must-Read posts, you know this week has been full of beauty news. Here’s a few extra tidbits you shouldn’t miss out on this weekend. Have fun enjoying the nice weather (fingers crossed) and tell your dad how much you love him on Father’s Day!

Uh oh, so much for that comeback. After her involvement in a car crash earlier this week (she may or may not have been driving the car), paramedics visited Lindsay Lohan’s hotel room today. Rumors swirled that she had been found unconscious but turns out it was just “exhaustion” from filming Liz & Dick. Let’s hope this isn’t as bad as it sounds. [MTV]
Last night’s VMAs had some moments we could have predicted. Adele gave a flawless performance of “Someone Like You” from her album “21,” Nicki Minaj showed up in a technicolor outfit, and the Hunger Games clip was far too short to satisfy our curiosity. Nothing shocking there. Still, there were quite a few unexpected twists, from big pregnancy news to some very touching tributes. What do you think was the biggest surprise of the night?
Giorgio Armani Prive fall haute couture 2011, Valentino haute couture fall 2011, Giambattista Valli fall couture 2011
This fall is all about bows galore. Runway shows usually give insight to what the coming season will bring trend-wise, and as of recent, we’ve seen models donning loads of these girly looped wonders. Valentino, Giorgio Armani Prive, and Giambattista Valli (just to name a few) all incorporated bows—oversize atop heads, accents for ultra-feminine dresses, and, of course, as details on shoes and jewelry. And here’s the great news: You don’t have to blow your bank account to partake in the trend. Thanks to our star guest curator Cynthia Rowley, our latest gift with purchase is your ticket to keeping up with this latest high-fashion fad. When you spend $25 or more on full size product in our shop, you receive an absolutely to-die-for plastic bow ring designed by Cynthia herself. (Just use the code ‘cynthiaring’ at checkout.)
This is, by far, my favorite gift with purchase yet, and I can’t wait to get my hands on the hot pink version. So if you’ve been waiting to buy that product that you sampled or you’re just ready to buy that nail polish you’ve been lusting after—now is the time. Get shopping because they are flying out the door!
Choose your favorite product over $25 from our Birchbox Shop and the bow ring is all yours.
Happy 3-day weekend! Even though you should really be outside enjoying the weather this weekend, we do have some amazing links for you…just in case you’re stuck inside and need to catch up on your reading.
First up, Stylist has coverage from the FiFi awards (aka the Oscars of fragrance), which took place yesterday. Among the award winners were Mary J Blige, Fergie, and Halle Berry, who took home the first Elizabeth Taylor Fragrance Celebrity of the Year award.
This week we discovered a new Tumblr and website that are have both quickly become new faves. Fashionista introduced us to Burgers and Nails, a Tumblr that’s exactly what it sounds like- pictures of burgers and nails. In a word: awesome. Actress/musician Zooey Deschanel, producer Sophia Rossi and writer/Internet sensation Molly McAleer also launched a new site this week called Hello Giggles and we’re hooked. It’s basically a hub of all things cute.
WWD has a great little feature today about Laurice Rahme, the founder of Bond No. 9, the fragrance company, which despite having a tiny budget, has become the number one seller at Saks Fifth Avenue.
And finally, just for fun- BellaSugar has pictures from Lady Gaga’s elaborate costume changes during her Good Morning America concert. We’re thinking our next video tutorial might have to be “How To: Talon Shaped Nails.”
Have a great weekend!
In need of a little Memorial Day treat for yourself? Visit the Birchbox Shop!
Another Friday, another link round up! It feels a bit like the calm before the storm over at Birchbox HQ right now. We’re about to head into a few crazy weeks. Not only are February boxes shipping next week (woot!), it’s also Social Media Week. Not to mention, the start of the most thrilling, manic, awesome of all weeks: Fashion Week. With that in mind, TGIF:
Fashion Copious posted the first image of Lady Gaga’s March Vogue Cover (that we know of). She’s sporting a bubble-gum pink bob, dark violet lips, and looks like she’s had her brows bleached.
Man Candy Alert! Sorry, I had to. This video collab between Justin Wu and jakandjil.com features the antics of male models from the Milan and Paris F/W 11/12 shows. Just try not smiling, it’s impossible!
In the Financial Times “Lunch with the FT” column Vanessa Friedman sat down with Natalie Massenet, founder of Net-a-Porter and the new off-shoot, Mr. Porter. She’s also essentially responsible for luxury e-tailing as we know it today, no big deal.
Fashionista covers new high-tech advancements in skin care this week. Coolest by far are the “twist and mix” vials of La Prairie Cellular Power Infusion. We’re also loving the Philosophy Keep The Peace line, available in March.
Style.com’s Beauty Counter Blog spoke with the founder of Rodin-Olio Lusso, Linda Rodin about her beauty routines. At 63, she seems to have discovered the fountain of youth.
Loving Linda Rodin and Gaga’s bold lips? Us too! Check out our guides to wearing red or orange!
