Earlier this year, I hit the ultimate beauty jackpot: eight bottles of free Fekkai shampoo and conditioner from their Essential Shea Collection. No, I didn’t raid the pricey Fifth Avenue salon. I was actually at a bar trivia night, and my team was divvying up a prize of donated spa goodies after winning first place. I guess no one else liked to wash their hair, because the precious Fekkai products remained untouched until I slipped them into my bag. Who knew my knowledge of Pippin and other obscure musicals would eventually pay off in the form of great hair?
Once a week, Birchbox’s resident Yoga and men’s product expert, Eric, will gives us girls some insight into his world in You’ve Got Male. Whether he’s giving his expertise on skincare (boys need advice, too!) or highlighting his new favorite grooming trend, this guy has got taste—so we’re lucky he’s on staff and willing to share.
Some of my days start super-early with a morning workout and end late with dinner and drinks with friends. Meaning? Meaning that I have to lug my gym bag around with me all day. Therefore, I always try to keep what I’m carrying as light as possible and I’m very strategic about what grooming products I bring along. To give you an idea of how I cut down on bulk, here’s a peek inside my gym bag.
Anthony Logistics Glycolic Facial Cleanser: Since it’s really hard to know how your skin will be behaving on any given morning, it’s important to take a cleanser that can do it all. This creamy formula gently exfoliates, lightens discoloration, and doesn’t dry out my skin.
Lift Lab Lift & Fix: I fell in love with this when the creator of the brand, Elliot Entis, sent it to me a few months ago. I use it as an all-around moisturizer. The formula is really light, so it’s the perfect thing to apply when you’re overheated from the gym. What’s especially cool about it is that it uses a special protein that protects skin and reverses the signs of past damage. Fun tip from Elliot: Mix it with your shave cream for a super-close shave!
Korres Body Butter in Guava: One thing I really hate about the gym is the sub-par body lotion that they provide in the locker room. We all know I’m a huge fan of Korres, one of the reasons being I adore their Body Butters. Because they are rich, I don’t have to use much and they add a little touch of luxury to my post-workout routine.
If you like the cleanser recommendation, check out the Anthony Logistics Shave Cream.
A self-proclaimed beauty addict and over-the-top girly girl, Lara Ramos has been dedicated to living a pretty lifestyle since birth. Her blog, The Glossarie, highlights ground-breaking beauty products and little laid-back luxuries. While it started as a straightforward beauty blog two years ago, The Glossarie has become a full-on outlet for chicness of all kinds. This week, Lara shares five pretty products and ideas that add a little fun to her world.
While some days it feels like I’m a full-time beauty tester, I’m strangely simple when it comes to the products I actually use every day. I pride myself on a well-edited little group, with no piece of permanent beauty booty like another in my stash. And I must say that I love my current lip collection. Here’s how it shapes up, from top to bottom:
NARS Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil in New Lover: A gorgeous golden pink that delivers more shine than I ever thought possible from a pencil. The glossy finish isn’t sticky at all, plus I can apply it sans mirror, which is a major bonus.
Tarte LipSurgence Natural Lip Tint in Enchanted: Moisturizing with insane staying power and especially great for the beach and pool because it doesn’t splash off. I love wearing it when I’m running around barefaced, too. It gives a pretty polish with its youthful, popsicle pink shade.
NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Dolce Vita: A truly non-drying matte lip pencil—’nuff said. But it’s the shade I really adore. The dusty rose is my go-to for when I want a little something extra. This is my ‘my lips but better’ lippie.
Revlon Super Lustrous Matte Lipstick in Stormy Pink: A bold, bright bubblegum-y princess pink and let me tell you, it’s crazy fun. I even sported it to an interview (I got the job!) and now I call it my secret weapon. It’s an instant confidence booster.
Korres Lip Butter Glaze in Pomegranate: A luxurious lip gloss in summer-perfect coral. This should be in everyone’s makeup bag as far as I’m concerned. It brightens up your whole face and it’s also very moisturizing.
Fresh Sugar Honey Tinted Lip Treatment SPF 15: The best nude lip shade EVER! It’s warm and rich in color, smells like lemon cookies and feels like a dream on your lips—I swear I will cry if they ever stop making this.
What do you think of my starting lineup? Do you edit your lip collection or would it dwarf mine a million times over?

Once a week, Birchbox’s resident yoga and men’s product expert, Eric, will give us girls some insight into his world in You’ve Got Male. Whether he’s giving his expertise on skincare (boys need advice, too!) or highlighting his new favorite grooming trend, this guy has got taste—so we’re lucky he’s on staff and willing to share.
Shortly after starting at Birchbox, I had the pleasure of visiting the Korres offices in downtown Manhattan. I was given a full rundown of the products (and even received a few gift items!) during my visit to the showroom. I took the products home and began incorporating them into my routine. Never before has a brand so completely transported me—all of my senses immediately loved this line. I felt like I was on the shores of Greece wading in the surf while luxuriating in the scent of the fig trees. (And I’ve never even been to Greece!) Best of all, this line is made from all-natural ingredients that offer great efficacy. Oh, and all products are also environmentally conscious, a major plus. Below, two of my absolute must-haves.
Guava Body Butter: This is the best body butter I’ve ever used. The texture is rich enough to moisturize in the cold weather, but still feels light and glides on easily. The guava scent is tropical and sweet while not being overbearing or overtly feminine. I use it on my elbows and hands and my skin feels smooth and nourished all day.
Cedar Shower Gel: This shower gel is extremely luxurious and foams like a dream. Even a quarter-sized amount is enough for my entire body—and I’m 6’1”! The scent is woodsy, but still fresh and masculine without being musky or dull. And, best of all, the moisturizing effects of this shower gel are super long-lasting.

We knew we liked LivLuna when we first read their mantra: “A digital tribe of fun fearless females who love natural beauty, healthy fitness and food, body positivity, yoga, eco-fashion, and social justice.” That’s why we’re super excited to have their CEO and founder, Maria Olson, guest blogging for us this week on a variety of topics, from eating healthily (and without guilt!) to her fave eco-friendly fashion finds.
Korres Guava Body Butter: I am obsessed with the smell of guava, and I love the Korres body butters. The lotion is rich enough to actually moisturize my skin, without having to rub it in too much. My skin feels smooth without that gooey feeling and it’s total aromatherapy.
Pangea Organics Eye Cream: I love Pangea products. And their eye cream is wonderfully hydrating and aromatherapeutic-ly scented. I also feel like it helps lighten my dark undereye circles.
suki Exfoliate Foaming Cleanser: I keep a jar of my beloved suki Sugar in my shower. I love this product so much! I’ve tried so many and this is my favorite exfoliator. I admit it, I adore the sweet lemon smell and taste. I try not to actually eat it…but knowing that it is real sugar makes it so much sweeter.
Pangea Organics Lip Balm: The Pangea lip balm is a staple in my purse, as it doesn’t dry out my skin, and smells yummy and organic.
Pangea Organics Balancing Oil: My daytime moisturizer is this oil because it balances out my skin, prevent breakouts, and give me essential hydration and protection. After toner, I always follow up with fingertips full of this product all over my face, neck, and décolleté.
Weleda Wild Rose Smoothing Facial Lotion: Weleda products are a staple in my bathroom. I love this yummy lotion, which I use after showers and at night in the spring and summer on my face, neck and décolleté because it’s light and not too heavy. The wild rose smells divine and supposedly helps with broken capillaries, which I have plenty of…

Happy Earth Day! As you know we’ve got eco on the brain this month but this week was also Passover and Easter Weekend, which means…spring is on the way! (And Cadbury Creme Eggs, of course.) It’s the perfect time to experiment with some new makeup and an eco-friendly routine.
- Fashionista has a slideshow of the best Easter Egg-inspired Makeup Colors to try. If you ever wanted an excuse to wear pastels…this is it! And, for our more crafty readers, Oh Joy, has the prettiest inspiration images of Easter eggs that we’ve seen this year. Who’s up for dying some eggs this weekend?
- Refinery29 has a timely roundup of their favorite ways to get green right now. Apparently we should all be drinking boxed wine instead of beer…good to know!
- Blisstree tried out a natural skincare ingredient we’re unfamiliar with: Charcoal. We’re intrigued!
- NAAG, Agy Deyn’s blog, has a cure for Seasonal Effective Disorder in case you’re still suffering from a lack of nice weather: Korres Shower Gel! It’s basically a Greek vacation in a bottle and we have to agree.
- Not to toot our own horn, but we called it – hair feathers have been recognized by the New York Times as a trend! If you’re still holding out, grab an extension now.
- WhoWhatWear has expert picks from makeup artist Erin Lee Smith of her favorite eco beauty products. We’ve been dying to try Jane Iredale too!
Treat yourself this weekend with some products that are good for your skin, and the earth!
Our co-founders Katia and Hayley are jaunting off to South by Southwest in Austin tomorrow. While the music festival is a blast, the duo is actually headed to Interactive, a series of events and presentations that focus on emerging technology. (Translation: FourSquare! Tumblr! FoodSpotting!) We’re always about what people take on trips, so we asked them to let us peek at the essentials they’re packing. Hopefully their jaunt won’t be all work and no play—you can’t go to SXSW and not have any fun!
What Katia’s bringing:
My Face Works i need to detox, i need to replenish, and i need damage control sheet masks: These are a must to help me refresh after flights and get ready for go go go time.
Oscar Blandi Olio di Jasmin Hair Serum: Perfect for adding some polish to my air-dried ‘do.
Jouer Luminizing Moisture Tint: A fast way to get flawless skin in just one simple step.
Korres Lip Butter in Wild Rose: I love all things butter, so just add a tint and I’m really happy! This is my new never-leave-home-without-it product.
Pomega5 Daily Revitalizing Concentrate: Thirsty skin + travel-friendly ampules = A-M-A-Z-I-N-G.
What Hayley’s Bringing:
Apothia If Roll-on Perfume Oil: The rollerball makes it so easy to travel with!
Deborah Lippman Stripper To Go: I’ll definitely be packing these handy to-go packets of nail polish remover in case my army green mani doesn’t make it through the weekend.
Lipstick Queen Pop Art Lip Gloss #13: I discovered this brand back in May 2010 during our Birchbox beta test and it’s still one of my faves. It’s half-gloss half-lipstick, which allows for quick application.
Sue Devitt Eye Intensifier Pencil in Bangalore: My new low maintenance short-on-time alternative to eye shadow.
Birchbox temporary tattoos!: Planning on branding some techie guys at the bars. To snag your own Birchbox tat, use the code TATS on any full-size order within our Shop.
Cosmetic case: My mom gave me this one — it’s from Thailand.

Chances are, if you’ve contacted Birchbox as some point, you’ve talked to our customer service ninja, Crystal. She’s the first one to answer the phone and respond to emails and makes sure that each and every one of our customers has a wonderful experience with Birchbox. We’d be lost without her! Since she’s the closest person in the office to all of our customers, we thought it would be fun to see exactly what’s going on at her desk today. For someone so busy she certainly has a clean desk! (How does she do that?)
My tiny turkish tea cup: My favorite item on my desk. It makes me get up frequently for quick runs to the water fountain, and keeps my water ice cold.
Korres Basil Lemon Body Butter: I love this body butter. It smells so fresh and clean, and keeps my hands oh so soft. Bianca (our other customer service guru!) thinks they are too soft to be real!
Deborah Lippmann Naked Nail Polish: It’s the perfect barely-there color and I’ve been testing this one out at my desk all week.
Josie Maran Cream Blush: I rarely wear a ton of makeup but this blush goes on super smooth and the compact is cute and shiny (and biodegradable)!
Simpkins Traditional Sweets: The metal tin is my favorite mixed travel sweets. A different mint for every mood. Of course snacks are an important part of working at Birchbox!
"Of course I always have Birchbox stickers, boxes, and post-its on hand for quick notes!"

Every day from now until December 31st, we’ll be posting a daily gift suggestion. It’s like an advent calendar, minus the ugly graphics.
For Overworked Boss: Korres Body Butter
Your boss really really needs a vacation. While you probably can’t afford to send her/him off on a Caribbean cruise, you can still give her this rich body butter. It smells tropically, but not in an icky Malibu Rum sort of way, and keeps elbows, knees, other dry areas soft and smooth. Pair it with a bottle of wine and tell her to leave her Blackberry at the office for once!
