Coconut Water Shaved Ice with Strawberry Basil Syrup Video: Guest Blogger

This week’s guest blogger is a lady after our own hearts. Claire Thomas is the genius behind Kitchy Kitchen, a gorgeous, drool-inducing food blog, as well as the host of Food for Thought with Claire Thomas, part of Litton’s Weekend Adventure on ABC. Did we mention she’s also a commercial director? Yeah, we’d hate her if she weren’t so freaking cool.

The inspiration for this light and refreshing dessert was my sister’s planned hairstyle for Coachella: pink roots!

Raspado, if you’re not familiar, is just shaved ice with syrup on it. So simple, and yet something that had never occurred to me to make. Now that I’ve been bitten by the bug, I can’t stop. Shaved iced tea with lemon infused syrup? It’s a frozen arnold palmer. Shaved pineapple juice with jalapeno mango syrup? A spicy yet refreshing treat. I am going to be all over this recipe on sunny days.

How To Get Pink Roots Video: Guest Blogger

My sister, Amanda, and I could not be more different. She’s an astonishing jewelry designer, who’s had her line, LuvAJ, since she was 15. My fashion sense comes from being inspired by Amanda’s bold choices and risks, and pillaging her closet to mix and match her pieces with my more classic items. She’s loud, silly, loves telling a tall tale, and is always the center of attention. When we throw parties together, she’s in charge of the iPod playlist while I’m in charge of the hors de’ouvres. If I’m debating whether or not to buy a pair of shoots, I take a quick snap on my phone to get her advice immediately.

We mirror each other in the sense that she loves food, but lives for fashion—while I love fashion, but live for food. We fuel each other’s creativity and are always there to tell the other if her idea is brilliant, or totally lame. One of the perks of knowing how to use a camera, and having Amanda as a sister, is that I get to shoot her lookbooks every season.

Where You’ll Find Me in L.A.: Guest Blogger

I’m an L.A. girl through and through. I love my town, it’s history, and mostly the food. So if you ever need to track me down, I’d try these delicious spots first:

1. The Brentwood Country Mart
If I could live here Mrs.-Basil-E-Frankweiller-style, I totally would. I’ve been going to Reddi Chick, the rotisserie chicken and fries spot, since I was in diapers; Caffe Luxxe's cappuccino is what gets me out the door in the morning; and Farm Shop has a cheese selection and tomato tartine that is to die for. I also stalk the adorable shop assistants at Unionmade, the best men’s store in California, if you ask me, and window shop at L.A. designer Jenni Kayne's newly opened boutique.

Oh, and there’s ice cream. Sweet Rose Creamery's Earl Grey ice cream is just the ticket on a hot summer day.

Food Photography How To’s: Guest Blogger

Food photography, or photography in general, can seem pretty tricky for a novice.  When I started, my food was sad, and honestly…not the most appetizing. Here are some lessons I learned along the way.

First, look at what you’re shooting. Is it colorful? Is there a lot of texture? Does it look delicious? Some things taste delicious, but shooting it is a whole other thing (chili and beef stew, I’m looking at you!). So take a good hard look at what you’re snapping, decide what you want to emphasize, and then focus on that.

Why did you decide to start The Kitchy Kitchen?

I grew up in a food family where my mom was an amazing cook, so I never felt the need to step into the kitchen. Right out of college I got a not-so-great job that wasn’t very creative, and my parents saw me struggling. By this time I had started baking my feelings, so the remedy for my creative muddle was obvious: Food blog! I spent three months learning how to shoot food professionally and developed my own recipes. Soon I was able to quit my job and started working as a food stylist. The rest is history, I guess.
