What’s on the Birchbox Editors’ Desks: Get Creative Edition

Welcome to Birchbox’s brand-new office! We’ve been here about a week now, so it’s still in the process of being “birchboxified.” But many team members have settled right in. Case in point: Jess, our Creative Director, has set up camp and created the perfect environment for a little inspiration.

  1. Coffee: I always have coffee on my desk. The only good thing about the 100-degree weather is that it’s socially acceptable for me to consume massive amounts of iced coffee.
  2. Homemade Trailmix: A little afternoon snack to help finish the day! I get giant bags of nuts and dried fruit from Trader Joe’s and mix them.
  3. NARS Satin Lipstick in Niagara: A new purchase! I normally don’t wear lip color but this summer coral won me over. (Editor’s Note: Jess should definitely wear this more often- it looks slammin’.)
  4. Foil Packets: Samples with purchase are a new venture for Birchbox! (See our blog post about the program for more info.) The piles on my desk were necessary while designing the accompanying card (they have great beauty tips on them).
  5.  Jouer Eyeshadow Palette: I love the way these products clip together, Legos-style. They’re also really easy to blend on in case my eyes need a little pick-me-up in the afternoon.
  6. The mess in the back: I’m always getting new paper samples, ribbon colors, and packaging novelties. It helps to constantly reference them when coming up with new ways to promote programs.

Team Awesome: Let’s Get Creative

Let’s talk about fonts for a second, shall we? We love our fonts. And white space, for that matter. We’re complete design geeks, which is why we searched high and low for a kick butt creative director. We’re happy to say we found a winner: Jess Williams, the founder of Boutiqued and former Thrillist Creative Director. She started last week and hit the ground running – who do you think designed that chic Feather Party invite?

Jess Williams, Creative Director

Hometown: Columbus, Ohio

Fun fact: My middle name is Leigh, after the actress Vivian Leigh from Gone with the Wind, and I once found a first-edition book and went to get it for my mom only to find it was $8,000…

Currently loving: Green eyeliner - Ivy, Army, Sage, all of it. I love Bobbi Brown’s Long-Wear Liner.

Worth the splurge: The perfect foundation.

Best beauty trick: Don’t wash your hair everyday - day two is always the best.

Beauty confession: I can never remember what order to put my makeup on (foundation, then corrector, then concealer? Or corrector first then concealer, then foundation?) so I have a scribbled cheat sheet under my makeup bag in my bathroom (I blame it on still being half-asleep when I get ready in the morning…)
