Learn about even more ways to style the topknot, inspired by Katie Gallagher’s spring 2013 runway.
Notable Quotables is a weekly series featuring a great quote. Whether it’s the founder of a beloved beauty brand, an eccentric makeup artist making headlines, or even a super-stylish celebrity, our favorite tastemakers always have something worth sharing.

One thing we’ll never get sick of is hearing how our favorite beauty products were conceived. Whether they were a product of necessity, a eureka moment, or something quite literally cooked up in the kitchen, the stories are always fascinating. In this month’s issue of Allure one of our celebrity makeup artist heroes, Scott Barnes, talks about coming up with his amazing body bronzing product, Body Bling, and working with Jennifer Lopez on the road.
“Right before I met Jennifer, I had been in Mexico for MTV. The art director decided that he wanted all the models to be tan—and this was January. I was stuck in a shitty hotel room in Mexico with a blender that I used for protein shakes. I just dumped all my brown pigments, shimmers, and moisturizers into the blender. Next thing I knew, everyone was going nuts for this ad hoc bronzing cream. It would become a product called Body Bling. This was two weeks before I met Jennifer [Lopez], and it became my secret weapon with her.”

One of my favorite Birchbox discoveries is Jouer’s Moisturizing Lip Gloss in ultra-flattering Birchbox Pink. The vitamin-packed formula soothes dry lips and adds a gorgeous fuchsia punch in a single, shimmery swoop. When I heard we’d be including more luscious colors of the gloss in our Birchbox Shop, I began dreaming up ways to put the new shades to use. Inspired by some of my favorite leading ladies, here are the looks I’ll be recreating with help from Jouer’s wonder gloss:

I’m a big believer in experimentation and giving all products a fair shake, but when I found out about Hollywood’s new go-to facial, I was floored (and maybe a little grossed out). What’s the latest trend in sunny SoCal? LED light therapy facials using sheep’s placenta gel that’s infused with gold flakes, courtesy of Dr. Harold Lancer.

Last night, at the What to Expect When You’re Expecting premiere, J.Lo rocked a gorgeous set of deep mauve lips with a bronze smoky eye. Not so long ago we predicted that the normally wintry deep red hue would be a hot new trend for spring and summer, so we were excited to see one of our favorite pop culture icons showing off this extra bold look.

Last night’s Academy Awards were a little snore-inducing, but it’s always fun to watch, and judge, the red carpet. Herewith, this year’s completely arbitrary, totally subjective picks and pans.

Knock It Off — We’re a little tired of the same, played-out looks from Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Lopez. We’ve seen Angie’s all-black, high slit too many times to count, and her leg posing last night had us rolling our eyes. J.Lo’s plunging neckline and its maybe-maybe-not wardrobe malfunction moment, which recalled her famous Versace gown from the Grammy’s in 2000, made us want to throw a sheet over the whole look.

Fullest Fringe — Rooney Mara’s got the ’20s style flapper bangs down to an art now (she’s been sporting the look since last fall), and when paired with her beautiful Givenchy gown, it was a win by far.

Evening Superhero — We swooned as soon as Gwyneth Paltrow stepped onto the red carpet. Wearing a gorgeous, caped Tom Ford look paired with a low, deconstructed ponytail, we couldn’t take our eyes off the actress’ stunning style all night long.

Role Model — There’s no doubt that Meryl Streep is one of the most talented ladies out there (17 Oscar nominations!), but she’s also one of the classiest, most gracious winners, too. When she accepted her Best Actress award last night, we were taking notes on how to seem lovely, poised, and witty all at the same time.

Prettiest Peplums — Michelle Williams and Tina Fey were stand-outs on the carpet showing off this ladylike trend. We give them both an A+ for style.

Best Feel Good Moment — As fans of the original 1965 version of The Sound of Music, we were so happy to see Christopher Plummer (a.k.a. Captain von Trapp) nominated for his role in this year’s Beginners. But we were even more ecstatic when the 82-year-old won the award, making his mark as the oldest actor ever to win an Oscar.
