Nail Trend Alert: At-Home Gel Manicures

image

The first and only time I got a gel manicure at the salon, I chose a set of pink-and-purple gradient nails (so 2012, I know) that lasted what felt like forever. While the extra-glossy finish and chip-free staying power lured me in, I wasn’t exactly thrilled with a bill that was the equivalent of a week’s worth of groceries.

Now a new breed of gel manis that you can do sans nail technician promises to give all the benefits and none of the drawbacks of their salon predecessors. I’m a big—no, huge—fan of these treatments, which work without the aid of UV lamps.

Dry Winter Skin Cured at the Kiehl’s + Birchbox Event

We’ve learned the hard way that even if we invest in a fancy humidifier and drink tons of water, when it comes to dry scaly winter skin the real game changers are a good moisturizer and a kickbutt serum. We know your seasonal complexion woes, which is why we teamed up with Kiehl’s on Tuesday night to host a New Year refresher event at their posh Upper East Side boutique.

From healthy skin consultations to hand massages, the space was packed with women who looked far more glowy on the way out than they did on the way in. Attendees received treatments with some of our favorite products like the Creme de Corps and the Acai Damage-Repairing Serum

And products weren’t the only thing getting a test drive. In honor of this January’s theme #mybestyear, we invited BluePrint Cleanse to set up a juice bar for ultrahealthy taste testing. (Officially, we can’t decide if we love the Pineapple Apple Mint or the Cashew Vanilla Cinnamon Agave flavor more.)

Meet This Month’s Birchbox Crush: Yoga Guru Tara Stiles

Whenever we talk about yoga guru Tara Stiles, we can’t resist piling on the accolades. Not only does the smart, gorgeous author of Slim Calm Sexy Yoga totally embody the end results of her book, she also has a laidback and unpretentious approach to the practice that we love—no chanting, no labels, just yoga. In this month’s issue of the Birchbox Magazine, you can read up on Stiles’ favorite skincare products and her best tips for getting (and staying) on the fitness bandwagon. Start practicing those downward dogs stat.

Tara also has an amazing, totally healthy recipe for a homemade Wendy’s Frosty that we’re a tiny bit obsessed with.

SAG Awards Superlatives: The Best Looks From the 2013 Show

The Screen Actor’s Guild awards are considered something of a halfway point between the just-passed Golden Globes and the upcoming Oscars on February 24th. The event’s red carpet is slightly more relaxed, which often means more subdued beauty and fashion. But we have to say that we thought last night’s showing was pretty amazing, with tons of stellar looks. Here are our superlatives from last night’s red carpet and awards show:

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Face Peels

I consider myself a skincare junkie—so face peels, which help remove the dead top layers of skin—have always been my jam. But we know that the idea of, um, peeling away parts of your face can be just a tiny bit intimidating. But rest assured, there’s a way to get the most out of these face-brightening treatments, whether you have an oily and acne-prone complexion or you’re hoping to tend to some of those fine lines.

Here’s our easy-to-use guide that gives you the lowdown on everything you ever wanted to know about face peels.
