How skinny is too skinny? If you’re a model, casting agent, or magazine publisher working in Israel, that question has just been answered for you. Israel has enacted a new law—effective as of January 1—forbidding models with a body-mass index (BMI) below 18.5 from appearing in ads and editorial spreads.
As the Wall Street Journal reports, the law also requires publications to tell readers when they’ve altered images of models to make them look skinnier. The measures are designed to put healthier-looking models in the spotlight, but it should be noted that they only apply to images produced in Israel, not those imported from other countries.
As Birchbox staffers, we’ve tried some pretty unconventional products in our time. Futuristic peptide serums? Check. Face sheets that look like Halloween masks? Been there, done that. But even our adventures pale compared to some of the bizarre beauty practices elsewhere in the world. We scoured the web for the weirdest treatments we could find, and we have been floored. From bloodsucking leeches to masseuse-friendly snakes, these treatments show just how far women all over the world are willing to go in the name of beauty:
While summer weddings season is in full swing, this is also the time of year when many of us take our most relaxing, anticipated vacation. For months I’ve been daydreaming about my 10-day trip to Israel, where my family and friends are so hasty to receive me—and now it’s finally here! Take a look at what I’ll be bringing along:
Mikoh Brazilian Bikini: For months I have pictured myself basking on Tel Aviv’s Mediterranean beach in this baby bright blue bikini. Mikoh is a relatively new Brazilian swimwear brand and makes bikinis like no other. Try one on and see for yourself.
Laura Geller Baked Blush-N-Brighten in Honey Dipped: Thanks to my June Birchbox, I’ve got a full-sized bronzer to take with me. I’m going for low-key make-up on this trip, and this compact is perfect to give my cheeks that extra glow.
Tierra Fresh-water Pearl Body Chain Necklace: I came across this store about a year ago on the corner of Spring and Lafayette in SoHo and when I saw this necklace, I couln’t live without it. The number of ways you can wear it are endless and it’s perfect for beach weather.
Marvis Classic Strong Mint (travel size) Toothpaste, Tatcha Blotting Papers, Sircuit Cosmeceuticals Molecular Mist, and Herban Essentials Towelettes: I am not an airplane type of gal, so this time I’ve planned to make my 11 hour flight as easy as possible. I insist on being clean, fresh, and hydrated when I step off that plane, not to mention totally chic with my Birchbox Travel Pouch!
Zoya Polish in Jules: I received this sample in my second Birchbox and I can’t get enough. This radiant color goes with everything. Fancy or casual—it’s become my go-to.
Az yallah, kadeemah! See you in two weeks!
