Three Eye-Catching New Nail Looks for Prom: Guest Blogger

Nail art is a Birchbox obsession. One of the first places we look for inspiration is Glitter, She Wrote, Anna Norman’s cheery, imaginative blog, where she shares her gorgeous designs and muses about life in the Big Apple. This week, Anna takes us inside her nail guru world, and will show us how to get gorgeous, DIY art on our fingertips.

They may be small, but that doesn’t mean your nails can’t make a wow-inducing fashion statement. Try one of these fresh, on-trend ideas to add some serious pizzazz on prom night.

Caviar Manicure

The caviar manicure is becoming one of the hottest new nail trends, so it’s a perfect choice for prom-bound fashionistas. Tiny “pearls” stick to wet nail polish to create a fashion-forward 3D effect. UK brand Ciaté will begin selling its Caviar Manicure Kit in three colors (rainbow, black pearls, and mother of pearl) at Sephora next month. For an inexpensive D.I.Y. version, pick up some microbeads at your local craft store and sprinkle them over wet polish. You wouldn’t wait until prom day to try on your dress for the first time, so I suggest giving these nails a trial run before the big day, too.

Polished and Pretty: Guest Blogger

We’re always looking for good sartorial inspiration, which is why we regularly turn to PR exec Jaimen Sfetko’s Tumblr, Jaimen Lee. Documenting her own stellar (and quirky cool) style, Sfetko gives us a daily dose of outfit envy — and has us wishing she did costume changes throughout the day. Naturally, we’re curious about the savvy New Yorker’s product picks, too. This week, Sfetko is guest blogging about her beauty musts. Today:

Given the NYFW just ended, let’s take a moment to check out the smallest, and often most anticipated, detail on the runways: nails! While some season’s see a predominant trend or color among a majority of shows, this season proved to be a quirkier mixed bag. BCBG Max Azria, for example, was all about neutral pinks; Erickson Beamon's show featured a different bright shade on each nail, and Nicole Miller mastered the checkerboard nails in rich blue and hot pink shades. Inspired by all the cool looks for spring 2012, I’ve rounded up three easy things you can do to your nails to be on trend:

1. Press and Go: I’m not talking about the first pair of fake nails you purchased at age six only to find out that they wouldn’t stay on for more than an hour. These Incoco Nail Polish Appliques are strips of actual polish that come dry to the touch and are easily pressed onto your nails. Not only do they last for two weeks, but they come pre-shaped so you can easily achieve a smooth manicure. I love their variety of neutrals for everyday and the leopard print is pretty amazing, too!
2. The Nothing Nail: If you’re like me, you have polish on every single day. Every once and a while, you should give your nails a nice vacation filled with sun and fresh air — it’s good for them.  When I do go sans polish, I always make sure to clean up my cuticles and give them a nice buff so they actually look decent. I love this travel manicure set from Japonesque as it’s easy to throw in a bag and fix hang nails as soon as they appear.
3. Greens and Golds: I’m a big red, pink, and off-white kind of girl, but I love experimenting with fun shades. Right now, I’m really into greens and golds. Zoya’s polishes are really long-wearing and their soft green shade, Gemma, and shimmery metallic, Jules, are my current favorites.

What are your favorite nail trends right now?

Never forget the importance of a good base and top coat!

On The Strip: Nailing It

Operations associate, Loren, has a thing for nails—and we can’t blame her. We love reading about new finishes and fun techniques, so we thought we’d give her a weekly slot on our blog to wax poetic about all things manicure (and pedicure!) related. Check back every Thursday for Nailing It, Birchbox’s dedicated polish series.

One beauty trend that I absolutely love is nail strips. Birchbox wanted to expose our subscribers to this cool new polish method so we sampled Incoco Nail Strips in this month’s box. These nifty strips make a manicure super easy and mess-free, especially if you’re someone on the go. I’m a member of the Ops Team and one question we’re getting from some of our subscribers is how to tone down these funky appliques. So I decided to come up with a few ways that you can rock these patterns without being over-the-top!

1)   Status Nail: One of my favorite ways to jazz up a manicure is to do a status nail. I usually rock a status nail on both of my ring fingers when I have a neutral polish on and want to add something glittery or different. This month, I received bright blue glitter strips in my box, which I absolutely love. I was already wearing Zoya Minka from the Touch Collection and spiced up my mani with this fun glitzy addition. One of my favorite fashionistas, Vanessa Hudgens, rocks this type of mani all the time on the red carpet!

2)Matte Finish: Another favorite of mine, which you will be seeing a lot of in the fall, is a matte polish finish. For those of you with cheetah prints or glitter, I highly recommend swiping a top coat of clear matte polish over your strips. This will make them look a little less flashy and I must say that I tried this over my blue glitter strips and loved the results.

3)Toes: If you’re hesitant to put your strips on your hands why not try your toes? It’s a great way to test this trend to see if it’s right for you. Plus, with zero drying time, you can give yourself a pedicure and then put on your fall boots, no problem.

Loving your Incoco strips? Have you tried any cool tricks with them yet?
