Customer Love Notes: A Life-Altering Highlighter

Nerd alert: One of our favorite things to do is read the customer reviews in the Birchbox Shop. You all are an opinionated bunch—and we like it! We especially adore when you write about your favorite purchases. From time to time, we’ll be highlighting some of your extra sweet product love letters on the blog.

Made with just the right amount extra-fine shimmer to boost radiance without being sparkly, Manna Kadar Cosmetics sheer glo shimmer lotion subtly reflects light to make your skin look fresh and youthful. Here’s a peek at what one love-struck customer had to say about this versatile highlighter:

"I have been using the same liquid luminizer for a long time and had never found anything else that could compare until I tried the Manna Sheer Glow! It’s lightweight, blends easily, and leaves a nice glow without being overly shimmery or glittery. Some luminzers make you look oily, but this gives a sheer, soft glow. I finally used up my sample (a little goes a long way!) and am now looking forward to the full-size!” Donna

What’s your secret to faking a luminous complexion?

Spotlight Your Eyes, Cheeks, and Lips With This One Product

Staffer Deepica recording the voiceover for her video about our new favorite multi-tasking product with our video director Jeff.

I’ve been using highlighter for a few years now, but until recently I’ve pretty much only used it to sculpt my cheekbones for a night out. A few months ago I discovered theBalm’s Mary-Lou Manizer—a shimmery powder illuminator—and have had my eyes opened to a whole new world of highlighter techniques. Click through and learn three unique ways to get pretty with this one product.

How To: Apply Highlighter in All the Right Places

image

There’s a small divide here at Birchbox HQ between those of us who love wearing highlighter and those who are a tad mystified by it. Thanks to my job testing products  and interviewing makeup artists, I definitely fall in the former camp, but I’m well aware that knowing where to apply highlighter doesn’t come naturally to most of us.  Ali, our brand new Marketing and Merchandising Manager, is one of those novices who never used to feel comfortable enough to incorporate highlighter into her daily look.

Armed with theBalm’s Mary-Lou Manizer, a honey-toned shimmer, I set out to convert Ali to my highlighter-happy ways. Click through to read the crash course I gave her in how to spotlight her features using nothing more than the powder highlighter and her fingertips.

California Love in a Bottle: Benefit’s Sun Beam

I get particularly bummed during winter in New York. As a California girl, I crave sunlight pretty much year-round. Since living in Manhattan means overcast skies and minimal doses of vitamin D (plus very sad and unfortunate ashy skin), I’m always looking for something to perk up my complexion. This afternoon, Benefit’s Sun Beam highlighter landed on my desk, and I can’t tell you how elated I was. Hello, California sun-kissed glow in a bottle!

Whether you’re spending the night at home with your besties or going to a glitzy bash, you’ll want to look even more gorgeous than usual. (After all, if New Year’s Eve is good for anything, it’s photo ops!) This week, we’re helping you out with five days of party essentials. Our focus today: getting glowy with the help of highlighter.

As much as I love my mighty powerful lip colors and intense smoky liners, there is one thing I would give them all up for: flawless supermodel skin. Since I wasn’t born with that je ne sais quois glow, I routinely fake it with highlighter.

Benefit’s PosieTint + Highlighter = A Stunning Duo

The idea of painting my face has always fazed me. Until now, I steered clear of lip and cheek stains because I didn’t want to look like Bozo the Clown. So when I first came across Benefit’s Posietint, an updated version of the bestselling Benetint, I was a little skeptical. The creamy gel is bubblegum pink and totally opaque in the bottle. But to my delight, it goes on sheer and leaves my lips and cheeks with a natural flush. After wearing this stain day in and day out for the past week, I now know how to make the most out of my Posietint.

Don’t:

  • Wear a full face of foundation with a lip and cheek stain. Instead, aim for a fresh-faced look by dabbing concealer on your trouble spots beforehand.

Do:

  • Prep your skin with a primer to ensure the formula goes on smoothly. I like Laura Geller Spackle Under Makeup Primer and Smashbox Cosmetics Photo Finish Primer.
  • Use sparingly. Paint three small stripes on each cheek and dot on your lips. Blend like crazy.
  • Layer your stain under a few swipes of liquid highlighter. Both Benefit’s High Beam and Girl Meets Pearl add a luminescent glow. After your stain has set, apply highlighter to your cheekbones, brow bones, and jawline. I also like painting a thin stripe down the bridge of my nose to add definition.

The result is very English rose meets runway model.

Fake Glowy Skin With Benefit’s New Watt’s Up Highlighter

Sometime between shooting our dewy skin video and reading about how to get glowy all summer long, I became a major highlighter devotee. Years ago, I went to a Benefit beauty counter in my hometown of Chicago and discovered High Beam, the classic satiny liquid highlighter that instantly provides a pearlescent sheen. I used the bottle to the last drop but then I discovered other products like Bobbi Brown’s Shimmer Brick and RMS’s Living Luminizer, and forgot all about my Benefit obsession. That was until the brand’s newest product, Watt’s Up, came across my desk.

Described as a “soft focus highlighter,” Benefit’s Watt’s Up is a shimmery stick that glides on smoothly and has a mellow champagne color. I love how it makes your skin look subtly more luminous and, while I choose to blend with my fingers, I appreciate the round spongy smudger that comes on the opposite end. Just like with all Benefit products, the packaging is witty and clever, mimicking an old school bulb. Even though the thematic presentation doesn’t contribute to the product’s effectiveness, it sure does make owning it more fun — who doesn’t love that?
