With warm weather (hopefully) just around the corner, it’s time to break out those spring dresses and let your hair down. Headbands are the ideal accessory for springtime looks, offering an easy way to dress up undone styles whether your hair is long or short. Here, I’ve styled three easy-to-achieve looks that can be finished in minutes!

The Gray Dilemma: Hairistocracy

We’re guilty of sticking with the same hair cut for years — if it’s not broke, why fix it? — but that can be a little boring. But not everyone has our issue. Paulina, one of our amazing operations associates, is always eyeing new cuts and styles. She’ll be sharing her tress inspiration and tips every other week here via her feature Hairistocracy.

It’s been two months since my little dye-job, and now I’m coming to terms with something that’s tough to talk about, but has everything to do with coloring. I’m graying.

Slowly but surely, I’m getting a little silver and I owe it all to genetics. Now that my recent dye is starting to fade, I’ve been debating a tough decision: do I continue to cover the grays or should I experiment with a little salt and pepper?

Upside-Down French Braid Photo Tutorial

Last Saturday, we shared an Instagram of Rachel’s ‘Brunch Braid’ (a.k.a. an upside-down French braid with a bun) and we were overwhelmed by the interest in how to create this style! Your wish is our command. Rachel re-created the look with step by step photos and tips so you can do it yourself.

You will need:

  • 1 strong pony holder
  • 1 thin pony holder
  • 1 sock that matches your hair color
  • Scissors
  • Bobby pins
  • Hair spray
  • Hair Brush

Step 1:

As with most styles and updos, second or third day hair is best.

Step 2:

Flip your head upside down and brush your hair out.

Chanel’s Runway Statement: The Faux Hawk Is So In

Photos: zimbio.com

There is just something so badass about pairing edgy hair with really ladylike clothing. Chanel took full advantage of that juxtaposition during yesterday’s spring 2012 couture show, which showcased gowns and gorgeous frocks galore (not to mention, 150 shades of blue), all paired with aerodynamic mohawks. Some were more extreme than others, but we especially loved the pompadour-style looks, which are definitely wearable for a night out.

DIY Hair: Braided Updo: TheGloss

TheGloss is one daily must-reads (right up there with the NY Times). We love the site’s witty approach to style and its smart and irreverent voice. We like the writing so much, in fact, that we’ll be featuring one of their posts each week here on the Birchbox blog.

Fun fact, I really only know how to do 2 hairstyles! When I don’t hot-roll my hair I generally braid it and twist it up. Sometimes because I want to look nice for a party, sometimes because I do not have 10 spare minutes in the morning. Man, since we’re doing this all week, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are really going to suck. But on the upside, if you only know how to do these two hairstyles, people will think you know a lot about hair and ask you questions.

My latest hair obsession is in!

You’ve probably seen photos of turban-style headbands sported throughout the decades and as a hot accessory from last spring, but now the look is coming back around again. This modern twist on Audrey Hepburn’s look from Sabrina (1954) is a sweet, sexy band that wraps around the forehead and lays on top of the hair. It’s a totally natural and chic style. Red Carpet Roundup: Oscar Buzz

Photo: Times Union

Now that the Golden Globes are over, our eyes are focused on the next big red carpet awards show: The Oscars.

Here are two beauty news tidbits that have us at attention:

1. While there is a “Best Makeup” category for the Oscars (more on that below), there isn’t a “Best Hair” category. Sad! Celebrity hairstylist Ted Gibson, of “What Not to Wear” fame, is aiming to change that. He’s started an online petition to create a Best Hair category and is hoping to grab 100,000 signatures. So far he only has 350, yikes! Click here to sign up.

2.  The shortlist for this year’s “Best Makeup” category is already out, with seven films on the docket including “Albert Nobbs,” “Anonymous,” “The Artist,” “Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life,” “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” “Hugo,” and “The Iron Lady.”

Sadly, “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” didn’t make the cut. We found that pretty surprising, given Rooney Mara’s incredible transformation into such a hardcore, punk version of herself. (Fun fact: she got real piercings and shaved part of her head for the film).

Need a point of reference to understand what films made the cut and what didn’t? Click through to see some of looks!
