Raw and honest, Rachel Wilkerson’s blog, The Life & Lessons of Rachel Wilkerson, is captivating and heartfelt. Covering the trials and tribulations of her personal life, her blog gives advice on everything from the serious (like moving house, which is so stressful) to the mundane (fun nail art!) and everything in between. We appreciate anyone that keeps it real the way she does, so we’re excited to have her as this week’s guest blogger.
Most women use the gym to sweat. They head there to amp up heart rates, burn calories, or train for a half marathon, and don’t think twice about how they look while doing so. And that’s totally fine; I use the gym that way most of the time. But some days, I use it to socialize and, well, flirt. (Though I’m engaged now, I’ve been known to develop gym crushes and up my cute factor accordingly.)
While no one needs to look cute at the gym, there are certain days—whether I’m hoping to get a second look from my gym crush or I’m just going to be staring at myself in the mirror for an hour during a class—that I choose to have a cute gym day. And for me, that starts with cute hair. Here are my go-to styles:
If you’re an avid follower of Birchbox on Twitter, you may have noticed that we’ve started workday workouts in the office. We’re doing one minute-long workouts (squats! pushups! lunges!) every hour on the hour, every day. The goal is to make us a fitter, happier office without too much effort and it has the added benefit of making the day go a lot faster.
This summer, Birchbox’s content team is extremely lucky to have awesome intern Shana in the office. She’s a student at Syracuse University (the smarty pants is a dual major in magazine journalism and psychology) and she’ll be helping with researching, writing, product testing and, of course, blogging. In addition to daily beauty news posts, she’ll be writing a weekly column called College Girl.
I’ll admit that last semester, I had the freedom of starting class after 10 A.M. every day, and Fridays were completely commitment-free. However, there are still those awkward breaks between classes that could be turned into useful time spent at the gym. The problem is, there’s the constant fear of being uncomfortably un-showered for your next class. I asked Birchbox’s content team, who all happen to be exercise fiends, what they do to quickly freshen up after the gym. Here’s what they said:
Meredith: “Recently, I did an interview with professional runner Sarah Bowman. She keeps anti-acne wipes in her track bag, so now I’ve gone out and bought Clearasil Acne Fighting Cleansing Wipes. I use these super strong pre-soaked towelettes on my face, chest, and back after a workout before I head home to shower.”
Lorelei: “After the gym when I’m sweaty, I use a powder dry shampoo—like Blow Faux Dry Shampoo—along my hair line. Then I’m ready to run to the office or wherever I need to go! My hair will probably have a funky wave in it, so after I put the product in then I’ll throw it up in a bun.”
Mollie: “I always have Herban Essentials Towelettes in my bag—they’re zesty and refreshing, and I can use them on my face without any stinging when I don’t have time for a full shower.”
Is running outdoors more your thing? Don’t forget to grab the perfect sunscreen from our Birchbox Shop.
This morning, as part of our quest to try every ballet-style fitness class in town, Lorelei, Meredith, and I trekked to Exhale’s Central Park location to get our Core Fusion on. Many plies later, I left with wobbly legs but barely sweaty. (Jenn Falik has a theory that NY women love this low sweat, high impact class because it allows them preserve their blow outs.) Either way, I was in a huge rush and couldn’t face the line for the showers. Instead, I sprinted to the office, where I was able to pull myself into presentable shape with these key savers:
-Herban Essentials Essential Oil Towelettes: I am a huge dork and carry these everywhere. They get you squeaky clean without any sting-age, and smell amazing.
-Oscar Blandi Pronto Dry Shampoo: A couple spritzes in my roots and I have more volume than usual. No visible oil or powder!
-NARS The Multiple in South Beach: A little blush n’ bronzer takes care of residual sleepiness and gets me ready for the day. I love the creamy texture in the summer because it gives me a little bit of sheen.
Add coffee and I’m ready to go!
