5 Beach-Day Secret Weapons
Summer might be quickly coming to an end (sob)—but that doesn’t mean we’re giving up our weekends at the seashore just yet.
We’re rounded up a collection of pocket-sized, sand-friendly supplies—compact enough to stow in your shoe while you’re swimming—to keep you tidy, sun-protected, and even a bit tipsy at the beach.
From a totally no-mess SPF to Steve McQueen-worthy shades, here are the must-haves you need in your bag to finish out summer with a bang.
Unlike lipstick, which is meant to be seen, base makeup is supposed to be your invisible ally, masking imperfections, evening out skin tone, and creating a perfect canvas for the rest of your makeup—without anyone knowing it’s actually there. Since that’s easier said than done, we’ve created a coverage guide to help you choose which formula is right for you.
Base Option: Tinted Primer
Coverage Level: Barely There
Applied after moisturizer, a tinted primer glosses over fine lines, dry patches, and rough areas. For a fresh-faced look, try Laura Geller’s Beauty Spackle® Tinted Under Make-up Primer in Bronze. The sheer bronze tint adds a subtle hint of color, while the antioxidant-infused formula hydrates thirsty skin. (Follow with actual foundation if you need extra coverage.)
Base Option: Tinted Moisturizer
Coverage Level: Au Naturel
Along the spectrum between bare skin and full-on foundation, tinted moisturizer hews closer to the former. To score this natural look, smooth on a thin layer over your face and down onto your neck, then continue with your regular makeup routine. Our entire team (minus the manfolk) is obsessed with Jouer’s Luminizing Moisture Tint. The oil-free formula feels positively weightless on, but provides smooth, even coverage and a radiant glow.
Base Option: BB Cream
Coverage Level: Sheerly Beloved
Originally designed to help post-peel patients mask redness, BB creams (which stand for beauty or blemish balms) combine the functions of a primer, antiaging serum, moisturizer, and light foundation in one product. Our current fave? Canadian import Marcelle, which infuses your complexion with just the right amount of color while antioxidants, aloe, and chamomile soothe, moisturize, minimize the appearance of pores and blemishes, and protect against aging.
Base Option: CC Cream
Coverage Level: Department of Corrections
CC Creams (aka color or complexion correction cream) are the latest alphabet-based beauty wunderkind. If you have acne, dark spots, or dull skin, a CC cream may be more up your alley. Unlike semisheer BB formulations, CC creams offer more coverage but still feel light on skin. If your skin is particularly picky, try Pür Minerals CC Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 40. Made with clarifying meadowsweet and brightening wheat germ extract, the silicone-free formula erases dark spots and evens out overall skin tone, plus protect your complexion from harmful (and aging) UV rays..
Base Option: Foundation
Coverage Level: Photoshop Finish
In our next life, we’d like to request a luminous complexion that needs nary a spot corrector. Till then, there’s nothing like liquid foundation to give you the look of perfect skin. Unlike the cakey foundations of yesteryear, Benefit’s Hello Flawless Oxygen Wow! expertly masks imperfections without feeling too heavy. A beauty editor favorite, it delivers oil-free moisture and a smooth, flawless finish that stays true to its name.

How to: Maximize Your Lunch Break
Your lunch hour is precious—think of it as a 60-minute breather in the middle of the frantic workday. But just because it’s called lunchtime doesn’t mean you should be spending all of those scant minutes chowing down on grub.
The brilliant gents of Birchbox Man have come up with five alternative ways to use your lunch break. (We still want you to eat, but you can do that at your desk.) One of them gets your heart rate up, one of them is a feast for your eyes, and another is maybe the best way to meet someone new that we’ve ever heard.

Our subscribers received adorable postcards in their June boxes illustrating the four cities that Birchbox calls home: New York, Paris, London, and Barcelona. But since we could only fit so much information on each card, we decided to provide even more insider intel on our blog—straight from Birchbox staffers around the world. Get your passport ready and check back each week for a new installment of Birchbox City Guides.
First stop: Printemps (102 Rue de Provence). You’ll find all the up-to-the-minute brands—without the massive crowds of Galeries Lafayette. Another on-trend spot: Le Bon Marché (24 Rue de Sèvres), whose lower level boasts La Grande Epicerie, where you can find all sorts of fabulous foodstuffs to take home (plus all the fixings for a pique-nique). For higher-concept fashion, walk over to Merci (111 Boulevard Beaumarchais), then indulge in a piece of chocolate cake at the boutique’s used bookshop and cafe. Vintage buffs should check out Kiloshop (125 Boulevard Saint-Germain), where you buy by the (yep, you guessed it) kilo.
While clear gloss always has a place in our hearts, we can’t get enough of extra-pigmented lipsticks. We even recently tested just how many swipes are in a single tube! From classic matte reds to hot pinks and deep purples, we are truly obsessed. And we’re not alone—from the looks of the spring collections, lips are having a major (and majorly bold) moment.
However, the sheer number of shades and formulas can seem daunting, even for the most seasoned pouts among us. Whether you’re gaga for fuchsia or searching for a classic red, we have the perfect color for you.
Here are the 10 best lipsticks to rock right now.

Birchbox Man Assistant Editor Kyle and his immaculately clean desk. You could eat off that desktop, we swear.
Despite my best efforts to have a tidy, clean, ever-organized apartment, my busy schedule usually means that I have piles of laundry and unread mail stacked up everywhere by the end of each week. But after coming back from the holidays with lots of fun goodies, I now have knickknacks and loose papers lying all over, and the utter chaos of my space is stressing me out.
Luckily Birchbox Man Assistant Editor Kyle—whom you’ll find out more about soon!—has a reputation on our team as Mr. Organizer, and he came up with a quick guide for how to declutter your space. The first thing on my to-do list for the weekend will be to use his brilliant techniques (including purging, labeling, and more superneat tendencies) to completely redo my ridiculously unfortunate space.
Without further ado, here are the four steps you need to follow to get organized for the new year.

For a few months now, Team Content’s section of the office has been feeling, well, manly. There are grooming products littered about, and instead of debating nail art trends we’ve been talking about Clint Eastwood’s top flicks and the shocking ascendence of the Oklahoma City Thunder. Yep, our Birchbox Man editor, Martin, is making his presence known and we like it. Today, he’s helping us out with his picks for gifts for every type of Dad.
For the Bearded Dad: Give him MCMC Fragrance’s Dude No. 1 Beard Oil to keep his whiskers conditioned and smelling good.
For the Wine Lover: Give him the Quirky Verseur so he can uncork, pour, and store his latest vintage without skipping a beat in his speech about Willamette Valley pinots.
For the Marathon Runner: Give him RumbaTime’s VanDam GO watch so he can track his pace and pay for a bottle of water at the finish line.
