It’s not everyday that you get to see how a television show is really made. But since Birchbox is partnering with the USA series SUITS this month, I had the very cool opportunity of visiting the show’s set, which is located just outside Toronto. Better still was being able to sit down with the lead cast members to discuss upcoming plot lines and favorite moments. Whether you’re a fan of SUITS or just want to know more about how television magic is made, here’s the play-by-play of my day on set:
Outside of the massive warehouse-like space where the set is located.
9:30AM: It’s go time! I head downstairs to the hotel lobby and meet up with the nine other journalists who are also in town to tour the set and chat with actors Gabriel Macht (Harvey Specter), Patrick Adams (Mike Ross), Rick Hoffman (Louis Litt), Meghan Markle (Rachel Zane), Sarah Rafferty (Donna Paulsen), and Gina Torres (Jessica Pearson).
We are a sucker for a bright red pout, but this week’s guest blogger, Julianne Carell, is even more addicted to bold lips than we are. In fact, her blog, PeaceLoveLipstick.com, is an ongoing ode to her favorite makeup category, covering everything from news to helpful application tips. This week, the lipstick-lover is showcasing her obsession on our site — check back each day for a new dose of lip color inspiration!
Every fashion week season, there’s always a single collection that stands out in my mind for the beauty look. For fall 2011, it was the Gucci show because of the decadent dark cherry lip color that was both strong and sexy. Even though the models strutted down the catwalk with super-shiny pouts, I loved seeing backstage pictures of makeup artist Pat McGrath in action creating matte lips with a pencil before applying the gloss. To recreate this look at home, try M.A.C. Lip Pencil in Beet, which is incredibly long-lasting. It’s perfect for special events and date nights!
If you do want to add a touch of shine on top, try one of Jouer’s moisturizing glosses.

When it comes to sunglasses, we are pretty picky. We’ve tried on enough pairs to know that certain styles really do look better on certain face shapes and not all shades are created equal. But we had the chance to sit down with a true expert, Eden Wexler from Solstice, who has been in the business for twelve years and done fittings on over 10,000 celebrities. Whoa. From whether or not to wear sunglasses at night to buying shades off the street, she cleared things up for us. (And now we know we’re justified in our preference for Ray-Ban, Gucci, Balenciaga, and the like.)
What are some guidelines for finding the best sunglasses for your face?
Generally you want to pick sunglasses that are slightly opposite of your face shape to give you balance. So for instance, if you have a very round face, you don’t want to pick a round shape because that will just enhance your overall roundness. Instead, you’ll want something that’s going to be a little bit more squared off or rectangular. Honestly, I don’t feel like there are any hard and fast rules because it really is so dependent on your features.
Why shouldn’t you buy shades on the street?
I always suggest that you never buy your sunglasses on the street because your eyes are obviously your most important accessory and you want to make sure that you really are getting the proper protection. The glasses that are sold on the street, you have no idea what you’re getting. You should really just buy sunglasses from a reputable retailer that has done the proper testing and gotten the proper clearances and approvals from the FDA and so on.
Is it harmful to wear sunglasses indoors or at night?
Yes, because you’re straining your eyes. Your eyes are meant to be able to see in a brighter light, so if you are shading them and you’re already in a dark environment, it’s just straining them.
What’s your favorite new trend this season?
I’ve been begging designers to bring back the cat eye for years. I’m so happy it’s finally here because it’s a silhouette that we haven’t seen in a very long time. I’ve been with the company over twelve years now, and we haven’t been doing cat eye since I’ve been here.
Don’t forget to nourish your eye area with a rich moisturizer like Pangea Organic’s Eye Cream.
