At Birchbox, we’re lucky to have access to the best minds in the beauty business. One of our most trusted gurus is June Jacobs, who created her eponymous skincare line over 30 years ago. It now consists of more than 100 professional and retail products, all designed to be efficacious and all-natural. Jacobs is so discerning about her formulas that she even opened her own independent laboratory, June Jacobs Labs, to whip up her special concoctions. Over the next week, the epidermis expert is giving us her best advice on everything from fall must-haves to getting the most out of her best-selling Papaya Purifying Enzyme Masque.
"In order to deliver serious results that don’t irritate the skin, my products use the highest quality botanical extracts derived from hydrosol technology, which distills active ingredients down to their purest form.
I also feel that it is important for us to connect with our consumer on a different level by sharing their values to protect the environment. All of my products are now ‘green,’ meaning that we use a preservative-free system and all parabens, dyes, sulfates, petrochemicals, and synthetic fragrance have been removed from my formulas. Also, I only use natural aromatics in my products instead of synthetic fragrance and my packaging is eco-friendly.”

A little while ago while doing research for a story about easy ways to make your lifestyle more environmentally friendly, we came across a site we love: Practically Green (@practicallygrn). Dedicated to helping people take smart healthy actions in their daily lives, the site is a plethora of information—including lots about skin-care and cosmetics (follow them on Facebook, too). We asked the ladies of Practically Green, Rebecca, Sarah, and Kristen, to divulge their fave products and over the next few days, we’ll hear from each of them about what their individual recommendations are for lips, face, eyes, and body.
RMS Beauty Cream Eyeshadow, Acure Line Eraser Balm, Jane Iredale Longest Lash Thickening & Lengthening Mascara, Erbaviva SPF 15, Mad Hippie Eye Cream
Rebecca: When choosing mascara, it’s best to avoid nasty stuff like parabens, phthalates, petrolatum, diazolidinyl urea, which have been linked to cancer, reproductive toxicity, and allergies. That’s why I reach for eco-friendly mascaras like Jane Iredale’s Longest Lash Thickening and Lengthening Mascara. It maximizes lashes using safe ingredients like cellulose fibers and sea minerals.
Sarah: I like to use baby sunscreen near my eyes (but not too close!) and am enjoying Erbaviva’s SPF 15 this season. ’m also devoted to Acure’s Line Eraser Balm and RMS Beauty’s shimmery eyeshadows, which are just right for the summer because they are moist and stay on even in all this heat.
Kristen: I’ve started using Mad Hippie Eye Cream with 17 actives, which I know is meant to reduce wrinkles (and I don’t have them yet because I am still in college), but it feels so soothing and light on my skin. Given that my life is full of a lot of late nights and test cramming, I’ve got to have a way to get rid of puffy bags under my eyes, and this product definitely helps. Plus, I’m sure my skin will thank me later.

We love Earth Day because it inspires us to make green resolutions that we can keep year-round. This year, we’re taking a look at our daily routines and making small changes that we can stick to.
What’s one small change you are making in order to be more green? What new organic or natural product you’ve added to your routine?
Hayley: “Lavanila Vanilla Grapefruit Body Wash and using my Baggu! I know i’m boring, but it’s the truth!”
Mollie: “I’ve overhauled all my cleaning supplies. I’m in love with Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day geranium dish washing soap — I actually *want* to do the dishes, which is a miracle. I also copied Hayley and bough the Lavanila Vanilla Grapefruit Body Wash - adore the smell.”
Molly: “Using my Birchbox Baggu when I go grocery shopping — no more plastic bags! I also carry my Sigg water canteen with me everywhere I go, I’ll never buy another plastic water bottle!”
Elizabeth: “No more water bottles for me, either. love Ginseng Eye Cream from Origins.”
Loren: “Does using a lot of Zoya nail polish count?”
Eric: “I’m greenifying my apartment move as much as possible by using recycled boxes from Birchbox office and using biodegradable bubble wrap.”
Meredith: After chatting with Juice Beauty founder Karen Behnke for a recent article, I am officially obsessed with their Stem Cellular Repair line. Not only is everything they produce USDA certified organic (a.k.a. uber green and healthy), but their clinical results for these particular products is really impressive.
